  • YEAAAAH..... GREAAAAAT !!!

  • UNBELIEVABLY ETERNAL.

  • -ABSOLUT SERIOUS TRACK A BIT AN EXCESSIVELY FOR ME RIGHT NOW...

  • This video is part of all three...

  • This guy is always pushing the envelope, never wanting to stand still, just a great musician. Always on the cutting edge, hearing both the history and future of jazz all in one.

  • Wen WaterMelon Man Kicks In ---- Did It Make You Pull A Funk Face As Well?

  • Nuf Love To Show For Herbie & Marcus

  • 55 people are idiots

  • love the performace, love it baby !!!

  • Herbie is the Einstein of music! Good choice!

  • 12:00 love baby, love!

  • The way they've done Speak Like A Child at the beginning is marvellous!

  • after listening to Herbie easier tunes for about 12 hours this songs make sense (otherwise not) ... now this is fantastic - a journey worth it

  • what the hell is this? seems to me they wasnt doing anything, ahh this must be white rich people music. shyt like this makes me go to sleep

  • @twista200317 you obviously didnt watch the whole thing!

  • @Yamah12a srry i couldnt i fell asleep lol, this music they play at expensive restaurants

  • @Yamah12a and twista200317, obviously you dont know, and/or understand great musicians when you hear it. Herbie, Marcus and Harvey are 3 of the world's GREATEST jazz musicians. However when you grow up on a "diet" of music made by only Akai MPC's and samples, I suppose then you wouldn't know and/or understand "real music" performed by "real musicians". Hopefully one day, both of you will come out of the "MPC and sample" world, and grow to learn and love "real" music played by "real musicians."

  • @gmoneynycmtnbiker hey mate ive seen herbie hancock three times before, in fact headhunters was the first album i bought, how did you get your assumption from my previous comment that i was agreeing with twista200317??

  • @gmoneynycmtnbiker .....also this real music i appreciate...cheers mate, check out a guy called JJ Cale or a band called Little Feat and Tower Of Power!! Real Music!!!

  • Does anybody know how the Song at 14:11 is called ??

Heard it somewhere... but i cant remember :/

    Thx !

  • @Schowimat "Watermelon Man" ;)

  • Superbe musique que celle de herbie Hancock. Il reste un des grand jazzmen de sa génération. Il personnifie le jazz fusion à lui tout seul.

Superb music than Herbie Hancock. It remains one of the great jazz musicians of his generation. He personifies the jazz fusion alone.

  • speak like a child .... beautiful tune

  • 2nd song @ 11:26

  • piano @ 03:31

  • The Man is awesome, wish I could be there for the 70th birthday bash in NYC!

  • should have played Rocket!

    ;]

  • @longded failed

  • @langfingerli well indeed! can you give me any more ? ;]

  • beautiful

  • Padraa says the 3,000 people who died in 9/11 deserved it. Anyone else agree with that?

  • man hes [theyr] looking old

    still got it tho huh?

i love the wayward bass at the start

  • harvey mason and marcus miller are struggling! Strange..

  • @Niggl23 struggling in what sense???

  • @Niggl23 no they arent.

  • Great !!!!

  • Sounds like a "Higher Ground" riff at 12:54. Nice jam. Thanks.

  • herbie pulling some pretty shitty sounds out of that Korg!

  • I see Marcus is back using the SWR amps instead of EBS

  • Fantastic performance from Herbie, Marcus and Harvey but how was this high quality video uploaded I thought the limit was 10 minutes

  • If you are a YT affiliate you get perks.. like longer vids etc.

  • if u signed up for youtube early enough there was no time limit

  • Comment removed

  • Great Rendition of "Speak Like a Child". My favourite after the one from the album with the same name.

  • this entire performance seems very unrehearsed... for better or worse, I'll let you be the judge

  • love Hancock, Miller's always quality, and Harvey is amazing too...

but you're right... something did'nt quite fit on this one... marcus seemed to actually have to prompt hancock to go in the direction of 'watermelon man', while hancock seemed to keep his own time

although perhaps there's more to it than my funk-addicted ears can comprehend

  • I don't think so, you can see Hancock prompt Miller by waving his hand like a bar or so before they transition, I think the transition is perfect.

  • It makes no sense to me how anyone can watch something as incredible as this, or any thing from TED for that matter, and still manage to get into silly youtube confrontations. Just watch the video or dont, jeez.

  • TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design...

This video is part of the Entertainment bit.

  • @warnerm666 what part of the word entertainment doesn't make sense for you m8 ?

    ;]

  • nobody forces you to watch music videos. retards.

  • we do want SCIENCE

    WE DO

    WEDO

    WEDO

  • yes, I want science too, but I also LOVE Herbie Hancock. It's an enjoyable performance.

  • does anybody know what korg thing hes using .. please hit me up if you know

  • oasys

  • thank you .. you know i got three responses and you were the only one that wasnt a complete asshole about it . obviously if i knew about where to look and all that i wouldnt have asked . Thanks again bro . 1love

  • It says Oasys quite clearly on the side.

  • yeh . o and thanks for not being a prick about it

  • Only if you tell me what off-worldish alphabet you are using ?

  • look man , i only wanted to know what equipment he was using .. i now if i asked who wants their ass kicked. you wouldnt sound so fucking smart would you .

  • No, I would not, because I would be laughing hysterically, possibly uncontrollably, at such a redundant and utterly ridiculous violent statement.

And Laughter does not, as we all know, sound particularly smart. All though it does sound a bit more intelligent, social and established then your pathetic little temper tantrums you manage to display on this board.

    You twat.

  • well to answer your question no i wont tell you what offworldish language im using now that your gonna be fucking dullard .. laughter in fact is a defense mechanisim . read book and then eat a dick . ok chap . im done with you . you waste of fucking oxygen .

  • Yes, I usually need to defend myself ,fiercely, when watching Python !.

Also, I understand that you can ... emulate ... more sophisticated communication beyond lesser primate hands and feed language.

I have , for example, seen your ability to "verbally" express the obvious fact that you are a unbelievably intolerable loud mouthed jerk.

As for your diet !. Do tell me, or rather, do not.

(Gosh, you really are a special breed of obscene slobchild, now are you ?)

  • ...and then FACE in between :)

  • how is it possible in 2010 to have video with MONO sound ?

  • PA Systems are often mono..

  • Herbie and TED, what a great combo!

  • marcus miller, i can feel your energy through the computer. you are an unbelievable bassist.

  • ha ha!

  • Amazing

  • One of the most fluent "speeches" I've heard from TED. Thank you for sharing this piece of heaven.

  • What a joy to see these 3 greats stretch out!...Thanks!

  • Nice play.

  • This beautiful human being, Herbie Hancock, such a delight, so wise, so ready to share, so directed and dedicated to staying with the essence of his art, and of us. And what a trio - so very very fine. What a show.

Hard to find a more unwavering musical, humanitarian spirit anywhere on the planet. Thank you TED. Thank you Mr Hancock, Mr Miller and Mr Mason. What a gift you all are.

  • great mini set. marcus' playing was fantasic and to all the haters. If you don't like it turn it off.

  • No Axel F?

  • ...going up?...said my mistress, as we flow through an Acapulco Bay Hotel.

Give me more of that, this elevator is such a bore---

    I guess thats oldskool PBS.

  • I don't listen to jazz and I still enjoyed this.

  • Wow, this is both technology and entertainment!

    Well done!

  • great jam

  • Although I agree this session is slightly boring, yet original, it is still not exactly as driving as herbie's earlier (and live) stuff. one thing is for sure- no one else can make a piano sound like he does

  • dead to me means has run it's course. if a composer currently produces a classic orchestral piece in the style of the 1700's. that piece is simply a rehash. "He" might have lots of fans, etc. but bleh. the same goes for art. it's dead too (and i'm a professional artist so i can say this with authority). in sciences of every kind, we don't allow "rehashes". we say... done already! make new ground. but in the arts we applaud the ability to perform rather than discover.

  • All recent music has been based on music before it. Progression of music requires knowledge of what is already out there. A composer could write classical piece and still put a new spin on it. Regardless, I fail to see how even the most formulaic piece is a "rehash" if it contains melodies, harmonies, and rhythms not arranged in other pieces already.

I also don't know why you say that science doesn't allow rehashes. Science frequently revisits experiments to verify and better understand them.

  • this is like sitting in on a total goof off session - very self-indulgent and unremarkable..

  • it gets better once he steps away from the synth!

  • aw geez herbie - these moogish sounds were all the rage in 1974 - but come on! not enough of the audience is stoned and we've heard these crazy sounds on bad movie soundtracks - bad choice man!

  • Cack!

How can you get Herbie Hancock on and allow him to ONLY play some kind of Jazz? He could at least have finished on a high with his "Rock it megamix"

  • herbie managed to find the worst trumpet sound in the oasys!

  • jazz is dead. it hasn't advanced at all in decades.

  • Listen to Mark Anthony Turnage and say that again

  • I am going to have to disagree with you actually. Jazz is not dead, it is merely no longer popular music. there is a fair chunk of the population that likes jazz. Now this Herbie Hancock stuff is utter crap, but you listen to some of the big band stuff and its absolutely amazing. Latin Jazz is especially popular right now. The US doesnt have much of an appreciation for good music. But you venture outside of it, and jazz is very much alive.

  • by your definition of dead, rock is dead blues is dead, pop is dead, grunge is dead, metal is dead, hell even prog and techno are dead. ironically the only "living" genre in your definition is infact JAZZ. in the last decade richie kotzen(of stanely clarke's Vertu) has taken Jazz guitar to new hieghts and levels of expression. listen to "conflicted" or "unity" from his repetoire or "toys" from his vertu days

  • Sounds like soundtrack to Transport Tycoon ;)

  • does he carry around his fazioli?

  • @gotomstergo Yes. To pretty much every show. I always wonder how much that costs.

  • cranck

  • lol John Hancock, it's Herbie Hancock!

  • Does marcus wear the wristband for a reason? Maybe magnetic?

  • Effin Nice

  • Aww, only the first three minutes were pseudonoisesoundscapejazz. :( Oh well. Rest is still hopefully new.

  • Never heard pseudo-noise soundscape jazz before that wasn't Grateful Dead. This is pretty nifty!

  • Absolutely amazing. I've never enjoyed jazz until watching this.

  • Comment removed

  • hell is other people's music.

  • lol. good one! although, i find this music quite enjoyable if it is playing in the background; I can't see this music as the primary focus of one's attention.

  • Ha ha, first TED video I put on my "Music" playlist. Man, Herbie rules!

  • having had the honour of watching and listening to Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter in the Chan Centre of Vancouver has been one of the few musical highlights of my l'il life :D Thank you for sharing this wonderful, intimate performance!!!

  • youtube Herbie Hancock rock it. you might recognise that dusty fresh album.

  • Dude.... you can't just casually say "Ground Zero" when talking about Japan.

  • This was really refreshing to see, i can tell they really enjoy what they are doing, I play a little piano(keyboard)..and some of the stuff Herbie was doing was astounding ..I watched the whole thing and loved every bit, even some of the music I didn't quite get at the very beginning ..great post TED

  • yeah! Herbie and Marcus on ted!! maybe everything going to be alright:)

  • Was amazing.

  • @awesomeSkins: You obviously listen to The Streets and Britney Spears, you daft prick.

  • hey!!! i actually liked it, just half an hour didnt seem so appealing at first, thats all. Good background music, listened to it the whole way through

  • @awesomeSkins

    You are a tool.

  • love it.

  • oh my, HH's midi keyboard sounds are so awful... makes that part almost unlistenable... wonder why he cannot afford something better or with more listenable sounds. Really? Fake horns? Fake voices? My discount casio sounds the same...

  • The keyboard he's using costs £5000 ! Not a cheap instrument

  • Still, not that expensive if you think that the piano at his side most probably costs ten and more times that much. And it's not even the cost of a crappy bassoon! (Yes, I play bassoon. And I don't own it.)

  • Good grief! I would never have thought Bassoons were that expensive!

  • Sure, it is quite expensive and can do many great thigns, but he's still using it to trigger these horrible, cheap sounding samples... If he just had a simple organ or even a cheap melodica it would sound better

  • the watermelon man. he has one of the bigest discografies i've ever seen.

  • lol its ross from friends

  • can't beat a bit of jazz in the evening

  • who are they? they make interesting sound.

  • Hancock alongside two old friends -- past drummer for The Headhunters, Harvey Mason and the original fretless bassist, Marcus Miller.

  • thanks

  • @ByungsuPark erm they tell you at the beginning and it's written in the side bar

  • A-ha Thank you I did't notice that.

  • I suggest looking up Herbie Hancock.

He's possibly the greatest musician alive.

He's a true master of Jazz, Classical, and virtually every type of music out there.

  • Death metal? ^.<

  • you don't like them, are you? kk

actually, I think jazz is little boring, but not bad.

  • even death metal, yes

  • yes I will. I like them.

but I think some people disagree your idea. four men click 'not recommend'

  • hehe, for a second i expected hancock to hold a speech... would have been interesting too.

  • takes a little while for the HD to process

  • how come this isnt available in hd?

  • descent,

  • decent*
