  • great music for great emperor :)

  • this is the perfect background music for a loving dream.. <3

  • My grandmother said to me - remember that HE was WOHLWOLLEND UNSER IMMERERHABEN KAISER UND GROSSWOJWOD - ungluecklich aber gerecht echt herr. RUHMREICH fuer kulturmenschen.

  • What about of the rumor that Franz Josef was really the son of Napoleon II, and grandson of Napoleon I ?

I know that the rumor was stronger about Maximilian, Josef´s brother, being the son of the son of Napoleon. But, Josef is also a candidate. He was the eldest, born five years after her mother married Karl his supposed-to-be father, and two years after her mother became intimate friend of Napoleon II. Young Josef resemble Napoleon II, and Josef did not seem endogamous as his other brothers.

  • @powerdriller10 I hear about that rumor for the first time, but it sounds pretty exciting, though i think that it is probably not true. Franz Josef a gradson of Bonaparte? It sounds very odd. Can i ask you where have you read this, cause i will have to check it...

  • @sozigen

Just go to Wikipedia in English or French, Start with "Maximilian Emperor Mexico" Franz Joseph´s brother, continue with "Napoleon II". Maximilian is the most mentioned as probable son of Napoleon II who had a very noticeable friendship with Franz´s Mother, Sophie.

If it is not true, there would be a long list of things to explain about Franz being much different from Karl, Sophie´s husband. By the way, Napoleon II was called "Franz" in the Hasburgo Court and so Sophie called him.

  • der schönste Walzer den es gibt

    the most beautiful waltz <3

    *sigh*

  • And they didn't even have computers back then, how did he remix it afterwards?

  • Such greatness transcends time and our human longings. Thank you, Strauss, for making us taste an infinitesimal part of your immortality!

  • I did not get that. Could you please explain it to me?

  • How charming and beautiful !

  • RIP Otto von Habsburg.

  • As I listen to this, Otto von Habsburg, has died :(

  • @kronosthetitanable

I have read that, asked by an aide in the European Parliament if he was attending the next Austria-Hungary football match, he apparently replied: “Who are we playing?”

  • Laurakbp.....it's encouraging to know there that is also someone out there who envisages themselves in an, now long lost, environment dancing to this....:R

  • Laurakbp.....it's encouraging to know there that is also someone out there who envisages themselves in an, now long lost, environment dancing to this....:R

  • That, friends, is one great performance, great orchestra, great conductor. None better on YouTube.

  • I have this romantic dream of swaying around in a ridiculous ball gown while listening to this... :D

  • Look here euro slaves, liberalism destroyet this strong europe and make todays chaos.Chaos come in swet name - freedom. Illusions of freedom with strong slavery.

Atheistic antichrists peoples brooken this old good christian europe.

Better europa with God and kaiser and strong katholicism.

  • 20 people dislike that they can't waltz

  • Poor little Johann. He was under the spell of the beautiful music! A cat that could play? A mouse that could dance?

Thank you Tom and Jerry for introducing me to my favorite composer of all time.

  • @SimuLord omg...i just remembered that episode...one of my all time favorites...XD

  • what a mustash

  • Such glorious music. What bright and cultured people.

  • muy buena musica....

  • Es lebe der Kaiser!

  • This guy is dead . . . the music, however, lives on, and on, gratefully.

  • @boladi his hundreds of illegitimate children would be living pieces of him lol.

  • nahhh 2:15 on its beautiful , that's where it should begin

  • The best part starts at 0:00 and ends at 10:34.

  • I think this 2011 is the best era to be alive, but I like the idea of a living in the country side. The only music you hear is what your mother hums or father fiddles. Then one evening, after months and months of waiting, you take a carriage to a ball. Everyone is adorned in splendid gowns and suits. Inside is the only orchestra you will hear for many more months, so you cherish every single instant of it. Every note, every crescendo is a visceral dream. I strive to listen to music like that.

  • @calico992 why you listening to it on youtube then lol

  • @calico992 ha nice comment, makes a change.

  • @calico992 very pleasant comment, i very much enjoyed reading that.

  • @calico992 I think so!

  • @calico992 If you are from a developing country countryside as a child and had no parents, I assure you, it might have happened once and suddenly... yeah it is quite life changing.

  • @calico992 lol at the picture you paint ,but imagine the culture shock of that ,no wonder people fell in love dancing to this type of music at that time

  • @calico992

  • @calico992 you have no idea how much i love this comment!

  • @calico992 What about the folk music at the pub.

  • @calico992 And what with communist countries?

  • @calico992 Then 2012 must be the best time to die! XD

  • @calico992

so were the cotillion bals in the past times. you like those atmospheres? read "war and peace" by tolstoj: that book was the first thing i thought at when i read your comment. i'm surprised to see how many enthusiastic supporters of the "good od times" still can be found... i like Wien and the asburgic empire for its enormous cultural vitality in all the possible fields of the human knowledge.

  • 0:51 to 1:09 is the best PARTS!!!

  • doctor who

  • Es ist eine schöne Melodie

  • I thought Franz Joseph was a good emperor. He did his best to keep together his crumbling empire. Every morning he would get up at 5am and met with his advisors. Each week he even met with his peasants in a town meeting set up so that they may voice their opinions. His use of Count Andrassy did much to keep the Hungarians content. He did the best with what he had.

  • I prefer der blaue danube :)

    Much better for dancing :)

  • Which Emperor? Wikipedia helps:

In 1889, the emperor Franz Josef visited Wilhelm II. Strauss' publisher, Fritz Simrock, suggested the title Kaiser-Walzer since the title could allude to either monarch, and thus satisfy the vanity of both rulers. The original cover of the piano edition bore the illustration of the Austrian Imperial Crown.

„Denn wir wissen, daß die Musik auch den Teufeln zuwider und unerträglich sei.“

  • 18+ people are jealouse cause they are not emperor.

  • THANK YOU SIR...This music was marvelous to my poor ears..

  • incredible.

  • 18 people probably dont like emperor Franz Joseph...

  • As a dancer, I naturally love Strauss' pieces of all the classical greats. I still listen to Beethoven, Bach, Tchaikovsky, and the others but dancing to Strauss' pieces makes them somewhat more interactive.

  • WHO ARE THOSE PEOPLE dressed in state? By the way, I LOVE this

Waltz. It's been my favorite since I was quite young and I'm nearly quite old!

  • What great beauty and longing!

  • 00:51 - 1:02 a dream

  • 00:53 - 1:02 ThE bEsT

  • AEIOU

  • It's too rushed! I feel that it should be slower. Nevertheless- it is fantastic!

  • @GuinevereN Oh really? Just enjoy the music. If the conductor wants to play it faster, that's not your business. When you become the conductor, I'm sure someone will say you're playing it too slow. You're like one of those people who go to a museum and complain about how they could have done a much better job at laying out the art pieces. Stupid people.

  • @acuison1 Wow. That was harsh. I do throroughly enjoy this music, in fact this piece is perhaps one of my favorites. And Im sure that should I conduct a piece I would get complaints. But I have heard this piece played slower and I enjoyed it more. Am I not entitled to an opinion?

  • @GuinevereN not really you have to listen to what your master Acuison1 has to say....he will lead you to the end of tunnel with his lamp.

  • This waltz will NEVER die. Franz Jozef do you hear this?

  • the Austro-Hungarian Empire fell apart - yes, if you consider the minorities within it, then perhaps they are better off. Are the colonies better off now that the British Empire is no more?

  • His mustache wrote this

  • @DevinTClark mustaches can't hold pens

  • @xcolonel

    they can hold pencils though.

  • @DevinTClark no they can't do that either...

  • @xcolonel

You try to tell his mustache that. It'll stab you with a knife.

  • A lovely Empire from which my grandparents came. Consider what followed? Are the decendents better off?

    -Friedensreich Hundertwasser

  • Wich is the orchestra? And the conductor? Very interesting!

Gruss Gott und viele Gluck fur die Habsburger Familie

    Danke

  • Franz Josef loved Sissi. What else matters! Suffer and complain you god damned peasants.

  • In my mind, this song conjures up images of life, beginning, innocent at first then comes the good years, love is found, lost, found again, confusion in life, all the sadness, then middle age, then finally it begins to get softer and quitter before finally ending with a bang.

  • @spinynorman230 Sangen eller marchen er lavet med en elegance der er speciel for både tid og sted, noget du ikke finder igen fordi der simpelt hen for få Kongerriger tilbage, said in plain english, : you are right some of your text but anyway you will never find the same cause too few kingdoms are left............

  • @spinynorman230 Sounds like my life so far. We'll see if the rest becomes true.

  • This is real music!!

  • @wshanks39

way back when emotion was used to make MUSIC!!!

most of todays music is kids getting a shot and other kids buy it as music

  • Danke für dies schöne Video!!

    Und nicht vergessen,

    18.August!! Des Kaisers Geburtstag!!

    (auch meiner...gg)

  • Ahah! THIS is the waltz that they always used as background music in the Wild Wild West TV show! *feels much better now*

Lovely piece of music; thank you for posting!

  • Ah yes, "alte Wien". The old emperor and his throne, deceptively looking like the whip cream covering a pastry. More complex than that. But Franz Josef was a hard working monarch - for nearly 70 years. And a tragic one ultimately. Strauss Jr.'s wonderful waltz is a fine monument to the Emperor and his times.

  • You know, I do hear a tiny bit of lossiness due to the digital conversion, but I have to take my hat off to you for having successfully preserved the full dynamic range of the original recording. That happens very rarely in Youtube classical music clips, and I appreciate the care you took to LEAVE THE ORIGINAL DYNAMICS INTACT. Nice job; no overmodulation and no noise. Neat.

  • Franz Josef may have been a great man, but was not a great emperor, at least for that period in history. He was pathologically against any sort of reform and his empire was one degree away from self-destructing over Serbia. Francis Ferdinand, who was assassinated in Sarajevo in 1914 would have done far better IMO as he was a very progressive man with very Liberal beliefs. Ironic.

  • @Lewisgun1 Francis Ferdinand was much more in tune with the times, but he was also hated by the Hungarian half of the Empire, and he hated the Hungarians back. Had he come to the throne, there's a strong chance the Hungarians would have risen in revolt like in 1848 and plunged the rusting old Empire into potentially fatal inner turmoil.

  • @Lewisgun1

Same as Frederick III and Wilhelm I. Frederick III was progressive and liberal, his son conservative. If he just had lived longer.

    Beautifull marsch anyway!

  • Franz Joseph was in hindsight too reactionary, but he is also quite a tragic figure, at least to me. He outlived his wife, his beloved son, his ideology, his times, and very nearly his empire.

  • waltz are usally in 3/4 so i think he's right

  • My father used to put me to sleep as a child to the sound of this... it mean, be still, be quiet, enjoy and sleep now... and it worked. Ahhhhhhh it brings back wonderful memories!

  • wyjebista kompozycja :D

  • Thank you for posting this beautiful music in its complete form :-)

  • no it starts in 2/4 and changes to 3/4. forgive me i'm just hearing this for the first time.

  • sorry it's in 2/4 or 4/4. not 3/4

  • i love the dominant to tonic interchange. indeed the most beautiful sound in music is the tritone resolving to the 1 chord. 4th down to 3rd, leading tone up to 1. i hear that alot in this music and i find it very pleasing to the ear. the 3/4 time doesnt hurt either.

  • @8472238 I agree dont know what with but you sound like you no what you are talking about.

  • @8472238 I agree dont know what with but you sound like you no what you are talking about.

    And as for this video....5*

  • The truth is that in his long reign Franz Joseph presided over the final collapse of the Austro-Hungarian empire. His approach to governing as an absolute monarch further divided the empire and his failure to stop Austria from attacking Servia at the beginning of WWI sank Europe into a horrible blood bath.

  • The Romantic period is the best one

  • Gott erhalte der Kaiser von Osterreich und ap. Konig von Ungarn! I

  • When I listen to this song I envision some women in bright golden dresses having their dresses twirled as the gentleman carries on the steps of the waltz. Their feet gracefully polishing across the walnut colored floor.

  • wow that sounds like charles dickens

  • I guess you like I are a hopeless romantic! Welcome to our world!

  • I absolutely love this; thank you to whoever posted it. It's been my favorite waltz for over 50 years. Romantic and joyous, how life needs to be lived. Thank you.

  • @Dianne724

I agree with you. I wish I colud have lived my life in the way you say (as I dreamed when I was 15), Don´t worry romanticism will never die...

  • Czechs were too long ocupated by theese austrian "kings" and "emperors". Czechs are too good to be ocupated. Every time in history. By Germans, Austrians and Russians. Nobody ever care about it. I hope they found after 1989 their freedom...

  • Gott beschütze unseren Kaiser, unser Land!

  • Gott erhalte, Got beschuetze unser Kaiser, unser Land! Things were worst, too much wost after the Habsburg Monarchie till today

  • Franz Josef was a worst emperor of A-H empire. He reigned too long, he was to much reactionary. Oh my god. Why he must lived to loong? If it not, empire should be reformed by Ferdinand d Este sonner than was too late. Like as frog on well sitted Franz Josef on throne and destroyed everything. No federacy for Czechs and other nations (Croatiens..). He listened only damned hungarian reactionaries and conservatives which wanted held statu qua in monarchy witnout reforms. Too. bad.

    Viribus Unitis

  • Well his wife.. the queen was Hungary's favorite queen.. so I guess it makes sense

  • I don't think he was the WORST emperor, but sadly, you are right that he lived much too long. Franz Ferdinand would have kicked butt a lot better, and Karl would have known how to prevent war.

  • Please contact Dr. Who. He may help you in the matter of time travel. On those grounds you may further have the opportunity to redress history.

  • Thanks to all patrons of arts & music such as Josef Franz.

Thanks to all great musicians such as Strauss and Tchaikovsky.

You left us with a legacy which generations and people from all over the world will continue to love...Thank you for the gift of music!

  • From what I have read here the "power of peace" has never been farther from our reach. I am always amazed how people hang on to their nationalities, past hurts and grievances. Sounds to me like the next big war is just around the corner. God help us all.

  • Imagine the peace when Austria look upon Hungary as their brothers and sisters and vice versa regardless of race, culture, or religion. When will the people of the world realize that the power for PEACE is within reach?

  • Für unseren Kaiser...Für Kaiser Franz!!

    @rpgta: It's written like this -> HaBsburger

  • Dear Lucas! Austria was a small duchy when Hungary was already a great eastern-european power, a rival of Byzantium in the race for domination over the Balcans. In 1485 Matthias Corvinus occupied Wienna and a few more years and the Hapsburg domination over Austria would have ended, but the rest is history.

  • The Hapsburgs were from 1526 onwards the freely elected kings of Hungary, I cannot emphasize this sufficiently, and I am proud of them as my kings. So lets not talk foolish things as I consider that we should support each other as neighbours and former Kammaraden. Heil Kaisertum Osterreich, Heil Konigreich Ungarn!

  • ... and the end of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire marked the end of civilization, as Hans-Hermann Hoppe accurately demonstrates in 'Democracy, The God That Failed'.

  • The Kaiser Waltz was actually composed to honor both their majesties Franz Joseph and Wilhelm II at a time when Austria and Germany were becoming friendly again

  • I thought it was compose for 40th anniversary of Franz Joseph's accession to the throne??

  • The Last Caesar Respect

  • I remember this song from "The Last Emperor" at the Emperor's coronation.
