What about of the rumor that Franz Josef was really the son of Napoleon II, and grandson of Napoleon I ?
I know that the rumor was stronger about Maximilian, Josef´s brother, being the son of the son of Napoleon. But, Josef is also a candidate. He was the eldest, born five years after her mother married Karl his supposed-to-be father, and two years after her mother became intimate friend of Napoleon II. Young Josef resemble Napoleon II, and Josef did not seem endogamous as his other brothers.
@powerdriller10 I hear about that rumor for the first time, but it sounds pretty exciting, though i think that it is probably not true. Franz Josef a gradson of Bonaparte? It sounds very odd. Can i ask you where have you read this, cause i will have to check it...
Just go to Wikipedia in English or French, Start with "Maximilian Emperor Mexico" Franz Joseph´s brother, continue with "Napoleon II". Maximilian is the most mentioned as probable son of Napoleon II who had a very noticeable friendship with Franz´s Mother, Sophie.
If it is not true, there would be a long list of things to explain about Franz being much different from Karl, Sophie´s husband. By the way, Napoleon II was called "Franz" in the Hasburgo Court and so Sophie called him.
I have read that, asked by an aide in the European Parliament if he was attending the next Austria-Hungary football match, he apparently replied: “Who are we playing?”

I think this 2011 is the best era to be alive, but I like the idea of a living in the country side. The only music you hear is what your mother hums or father fiddles. Then one evening, after months and months of waiting, you take a carriage to a ball. Everyone is adorned in splendid gowns and suits. Inside is the only orchestra you will hear for many more months, so you cherish every single instant of it. Every note, every crescendo is a visceral dream. I strive to listen to music like that.
@calico992 If you are from a developing country countryside as a child and had no parents, I assure you, it might have happened once and suddenly... yeah it is quite life changing.

I thought Franz Joseph was a good emperor. He did his best to keep together his crumbling empire. Every morning he would get up at 5am and met with his advisors. Each week he even met with his peasants in a town meeting set up so that they may voice their opinions. His use of Count Andrassy did much to keep the Hungarians content. He did the best with what he had.
In 1889, the emperor Franz Josef visited Wilhelm II. Strauss' publisher, Fritz Simrock, suggested the title Kaiser-Walzer since the title could allude to either monarch, and thus satisfy the vanity of both rulers. The original cover of the piano edition bore the illustration of the Austrian Imperial Crown.
„Denn wir wissen, daß die Musik auch den Teufeln zuwider und unerträglich sei.“
As a dancer, I naturally love Strauss' pieces of all the classical greats. I still listen to Beethoven, Bach, Tchaikovsky, and the others but dancing to Strauss' pieces makes them somewhat more interactive.
@GuinevereN Oh really? Just enjoy the music. If the conductor wants to play it faster, that's not your business. When you become the conductor, I'm sure someone will say you're playing it too slow. You're like one of those people who go to a museum and complain about how they could have done a much better job at laying out the art pieces. Stupid people.
@acuison1 Wow. That was harsh. I do throroughly enjoy this music, in fact this piece is perhaps one of my favorites. And Im sure that should I conduct a piece I would get complaints. But I have heard this piece played slower and I enjoyed it more. Am I not entitled to an opinion?
the Austro-Hungarian Empire fell apart - yes, if you consider the minorities within it, then perhaps they are better off. Are the colonies better off now that the British Empire is no more?

Ah yes, "alte Wien". The old emperor and his throne, deceptively looking like the whip cream covering a pastry. More complex than that. But Franz Josef was a hard working monarch - for nearly 70 years. And a tragic one ultimately. Strauss Jr.'s wonderful waltz is a fine monument to the Emperor and his times.
You know, I do hear a tiny bit of lossiness due to the digital conversion, but I have to take my hat off to you for having successfully preserved the full dynamic range of the original recording. That happens very rarely in Youtube classical music clips, and I appreciate the care you took to LEAVE THE ORIGINAL DYNAMICS INTACT. Nice job; no overmodulation and no noise. Neat.
Franz Josef may have been a great man, but was not a great emperor, at least for that period in history. He was pathologically against any sort of reform and his empire was one degree away from self-destructing over Serbia. Francis Ferdinand, who was assassinated in Sarajevo in 1914 would have done far better IMO as he was a very progressive man with very Liberal beliefs. Ironic.
@Lewisgun1 Francis Ferdinand was much more in tune with the times, but he was also hated by the Hungarian half of the Empire, and he hated the Hungarians back. Had he come to the throne, there's a strong chance the Hungarians would have risen in revolt like in 1848 and plunged the rusting old Empire into potentially fatal inner turmoil.
Franz Joseph was in hindsight too reactionary, but he is also quite a tragic figure, at least to me. He outlived his wife, his beloved son, his ideology, his times, and very nearly his empire.
My father used to put me to sleep as a child to the sound of this... it mean, be still, be quiet, enjoy and sleep now... and it worked. Ahhhhhhh it brings back wonderful memories!
i love the dominant to tonic interchange. indeed the most beautiful sound in music is the tritone resolving to the 1 chord. 4th down to 3rd, leading tone up to 1. i hear that alot in this music and i find it very pleasing to the ear. the 3/4 time doesnt hurt either.
Nice pics and nice music. I love old photos/ (silent fims), although I realize that eveybody in old pictures are dead., 100 percent of them. Hey if Eistein was so smart , how come he died?--ha ha
BTW, I have a shorten guitar version fo this beautiful tune--check it out ...maybe I "video response."
The truth is that in his long reign Franz Joseph presided over the final collapse of the Austro-Hungarian empire. His approach to governing as an absolute monarch further divided the empire and his failure to stop Austria from attacking Servia at the beginning of WWI sank Europe into a horrible blood bath.
I WILL WALK AMONGST THE CHILDREN OF THE GRANDFATHERS OF THE THUNDERBEINGS OF THE IYSECA(BAD SPEAKERS) IN THE SNOW WA our Grandfathers blood WE under the day sun and the night sun

When I listen to this song I envision some women in bright golden dresses having their dresses twirled as the gentleman carries on the steps of the waltz. Their feet gracefully polishing across the walnut colored floor.
I absolutely love this; thank you to whoever posted it. It's been my favorite waltz for over 50 years. Romantic and joyous, how life needs to be lived. Thank you.
My family came from Austro-Hungary also the Galacian Provinces. Vienna, Budapest, issinbuitVolva as well some small Hungarian Village outside of Budapest. Also my Great Great Grandfather Jonas was from Pest.
Czechs were too long ocupated by theese austrian "kings" and "emperors". Czechs are too good to be ocupated. Every time in history. By Germans, Austrians and Russians. Nobody ever care about it. I hope they found after 1989 their freedom...
Gott schütze unsere Brüder und Schwestern, die verblendet von Nationalismus, heute in "fremden" Ländern leben müssen..Hungary, Czech, Slovakia, Slovenija, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Poland, Bosnia, Ukraina, Moldova and also my homeland, Austria!
Sie haben vergessen die treuen Untertanen von Trient und Triest ... ist nicht wahr dass wir die Itlalia wollte, waren wir sehr gut mit unseren Franz und viele von uns noch erinnern
Franz Josef was a worst emperor of A-H empire. He reigned too long, he was to much reactionary. Oh my god. Why he must lived to loong? If it not, empire should be reformed by Ferdinand d Este sonner than was too late. Like as frog on well sitted Franz Josef on throne and destroyed everything. No federacy for Czechs and other nations (Croatiens..). He listened only damned hungarian reactionaries and conservatives which wanted held statu qua in monarchy witnout reforms. Too. bad.
I don't think he was the WORST emperor, but sadly, you are right that he lived much too long. Franz Ferdinand would have kicked butt a lot better, and Karl would have known how to prevent war.
From what I have read here the "power of peace" has never been farther from our reach. I am always amazed how people hang on to their nationalities, past hurts and grievances. Sounds to me like the next big war is just around the corner. God help us all.
Imagine the peace when Austria look upon Hungary as their brothers and sisters and vice versa regardless of race, culture, or religion. When will the people of the world realize that the power for PEACE is within reach?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Hungary kissed Austria's ass every time they needed something. Austria never treated Hungary as their equal! Only Hungarians love to believe that they were on the same position with Austria. Let's not forget that Austria occupied Hungary. This is the true, even if Hungary does not like this. By by Hungarian losers and ass kissing people!
Dear Lucas! Austria was a small duchy when Hungary was already a great eastern-european power, a rival of Byzantium in the race for domination over the Balcans. In 1485 Matthias Corvinus occupied Wienna and a few more years and the Hapsburg domination over Austria would have ended, but the rest is history.
The Hapsburgs were from 1526 onwards the freely elected kings of Hungary, I cannot emphasize this sufficiently, and I am proud of them as my kings. So lets not talk foolish things as I consider that we should support each other as neighbours and former Kammaraden. Heil Kaisertum Osterreich, Heil Konigreich Ungarn!
... and the end of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire marked the end of civilization, as Hans-Hermann Hoppe accurately demonstrates in 'Democracy, The God That Failed'.
The Kaiser Waltz was actually composed to honor both their majesties Franz Joseph and Wilhelm II at a time when Austria and Germany were becoming friendly again

When I listen to this song I envision some women in bright golden dresses having their dresses twirled as the gentleman carries on the steps of the waltz. Their feet gracefully polishing across the walnut colored floor.

Czechs were too long ocupated by theese austrian "kings" and "emperors". Czechs are too good to be ocupated. Every time in history. By Germans, Austrians and Russians. Nobody ever care about it. I hope they found after 1989 their freedom...

Hungary kissed Austria's ass every time they needed something. Austria never treated Hungary as their equal! Only Hungarians love to believe that they were on the same position with Austria. Let's not forget that Austria occupied Hungary. This is the true, even if Hungary does not like this. By by Hungarian losers and ass kissing people!
lucas8479 2 years ago
Dear Lucas! Austria was a small duchy when Hungary was already a great eastern-european power, a rival of Byzantium in the race for domination over the Balcans. In 1485 Matthias Corvinus occupied Wienna and a few more years and the Hapsburg domination over Austria would have ended, but the rest is history.
rpgta 2 years ago 4
The Hapsburgs were from 1526 onwards the freely elected kings of Hungary, I cannot emphasize this sufficiently, and I am proud of them as my kings. So lets not talk foolish things as I consider that we should support each other as neighbours and former Kammaraden. Heil Kaisertum Osterreich, Heil Konigreich Ungarn!
rpgta 2 years ago 3
... and the end of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire marked the end of civilization, as Hans-Hermann Hoppe accurately demonstrates in 'Democracy, The God That Failed'.

The Kaiser Waltz was actually composed to honor both their majesties Franz Joseph and Wilhelm II at a time when Austria and Germany were becoming friendly again
