I recommend you listen to Tehranis in conversation. That dialect is VERY tonal and aspirated, just like Mandarin. Of course, just watch out for "oon".

Did you learn Arabic before Farsi?

It's really evident that you have a skill with languages, the only thing I noticed is your pronunciation sounded more Arabic than Persian. Maybe I am more used to hearing Iranian speakers and you were using a different accent. How many languages do you know?

Hi, Im in Farsi II - it is a beautiful language, verb tenses are hard, as I havent( at the fault of The US gov't School/Education System, hardly focuses on GRAMMAR!) so the grammar is killing me - but you need to know one thing, SPOKEN/Colloquial, such as the 'Tehrani' dialect is COMPLETELY different than written Farsi, if you were to speak to an Iranian-native, they would look at you as if you were, for example, speaking Shakesperien-Eng to an anvg city-speaker of AMRCN-English

Great, however, you need to focus and improve your pronunciation by soften it. For instance: the word "yani" (loaned from Arabic) doesn't sound anything like that in normal conversations.

Hey Glossika, your Farsi is pretty good but you have mistakes which are very important to correct:

1) It's not ببخشين, but ببخشيد

2) When you conjugate a verb in Farsi that is for the "you" pronoun, the verb does not end in "ين". It has to end in either "ى", or "يد"

3) It's not مى دونيد, but مى دانيد

4) How do you say "" in .....? - را به "" چي

ميگى؟

@Glossika In Persian, we don't say things like they are written probably in your text book. If the text happens to be by Kamran Talatoff, he's published alot of materials that are written in the vernacular.

For example.

I can read persian well.

من میتوانم فارسی خوب بخوانم

man mitavânam fârsi khub bekhânam

but most Persians will say

man mitoonam farsi bekhoonam.

so formally

ببخشید is how that word should ALWAYS be written, but Persians will say it like bebkhashiN ببخشین

@JonVonD I really appreciate this kind of feedback and it's what I need in order to transfer writing to speaking. I couldn't read Persian very well one year ago, so I probably have spelling mistakes. I'll be focusing two weeks on Persian in December 2010 so I'll need a lot of input to be able to make progress. Yes, my book also writes "ببخشین" but pronunciation written as bebakhshin, not bebkhashin.

@Glossika you pronounce /ɒ/ too much like /ɑ/

whenever alef is used after a consonant it DOES NOT signify a long /ɑ/ like in Arabic. ALOT of Persian learners who are familiar with Arabic make this mistake. It signifies the rounded /ɒ/ phoneme, instead.. Therefore باغ is pronounced /bɒɣ/ not /bɑɣ/, like you are saying it.

@JonVonD Oh, I know that one already. My problem is the unwritten 'a' which sounds more like 'ae' and when to say that versus 'u' 'o' or 'i'.

@Glossika through further study of the language, you will usually be able to pick up those kinds of things, but the placement of short vowels is something that you have to attribute to sort of rote memorization. However, certain consonants are often times indicators of what kind of short vowels will be used. احساس کردن for example, the first vowel is most likely to be an 'e' since it is the first word and the preceding sounds is an 'h' sound. استراحت is another example of this similar principle
