Bertlemann was always the best surfer out-- by far --on any given day. All us Hawaii kids knew he was the most radical surfer of his time, taking the whole art of surfing into the future.
Love this footage of him entering the tube on his board, then bodysurfing out of it. And switching stance to get tubed front-side (and making it!) at Alamo. All in a day's work...
This bloke was tops ! "rurikvred" answered the question I was gonna ask which was "was he known as "rubberman?" Pretty sure Mr.Bertlemann went on to make the twinfin famous although the concept never lit my fuse. Still, how can one dispute the fact of this bloke's talent huh?
I've only been surfing for a few years but LB's surfing footage has captivated me the most of any surfer. Coolest style. Great interview too. Well said bro! Cheers from down under in N.Z.
Do you remember going to an Elks Lodge concert in San Clemente, circa 1980, for a concert where a band called "Chateau" played? You were there with Gerry and Shaun Thompson, probably in town for a Quiksilver tourney at Trestles... If so, I was the keyboardist surfer in the band, and my drummer/roommate was Matt Sorum, who went on to drum for The Cult, Guns N Roses, and now with Velvet Revolver. I had long red hair, and picked up your tab at the bar!
Man, were you THE coolest surfer the west coast loved back in the day, and for us older (good god, I'm saying that now?) surfers... yipes!
Hope all is well with you, Rubberman! If you come to the mainland, my family and place is free for you to hang! Do you have an email location for contact?
i tell u what they do in alot of old surfing movies is that they do laybacks in the barrel. i wish i could do that, also why dont any modern day surfers do it...lets bring it back...coolest move ever!!
Larry Bertlman was the original Bad Ass! No one surfed like Larry... No one...You should have seen him skateboard back in the day! way ahead of his time. When I was a kid, I worked on that signature bottom turn in the water and on my Logan Earth Ski skateboard (gull wing trucks, Roadrider 6 wheels!!! Old school baby!) No one shreds like Larry even today.
Watching this vid of LB, guys like him, buttons, Lopez, etc. surf better than the guys today, maybe with the exception of Slater. the things guys lack today is style.
Thanks for enjoying the ride as much as I did! Still looking for more footage of myself;back in those days I didnt get paid for all the footage anyone shot of me...nor do they give it to me now.I take that back....Thanks to Art Brewer for the great shot you gave me for my wedding gift. Forever thankful. LB
There is no doubt in my mind that you invented the graceful parts of modern surfing as we see it today. Thanks for your positive influence. I bet you still Rip
thanx for posting this vid...why is there not more footage of LB surfing ? he was legend even in the 70's..every one I know here in california wanted to imitate his style over any one else.
I got a phone call last week from my buddy Rich Ellis. Haven't talked to him since when we were surfing/living on the North Shore 1981-1983. Totally out of the blue. He took a water-shot of Buttons(with the LB mid seventies fro) switchfooting/Tubed at perfect 10' Pipe. It made cover of
Surfer Magazine Feb. 1982. I brought up Ellis' name when I saw Butts at the San Diego ASR a few years ago. It made him smile. Aloha. PS: Stay young.

So far ahead of his time, and yet still of his time.
One of the few that changed surfing forever, and for the better.

What is amazing is how well LB surfs on a board that by today's standards, would be considered unrideable.

Great style! Don't see that much today. Those turns looks like fun and I love that squat at 00:41. I'd love to surf a spot like this. Stay stoked!
