I like this idea and think it's exactly what I need for starting our vegetable garden plants. We don't have the best direct sunlight situation in our house as we have big trees that block it. I haven't had much success starting plants indoors.
I am going to use our son's old terraium and setup a little started station. This way I can use our basement instead of our living room window. Thanks for the tips.
@NackRoss If you plan on using miracle grow or other chemicals you will need to get proper drainage. I have a reservoir of plastic containers upside down at the bottom to keep a "figurative" underground pond. The idea is the plants should do a great job absorbing water themselves... and I want the roots to grow deep. 2 Ideas: 1: put a hose in and use elevation as a siphon effect. 2: Get a Pool side attachment for hoses also think about how high you want it from the bottom for sitting water

Cfl 6500k light bulbs are better for your tomatos growth. And they wont make your trash can hot. When ever you want it to flower and give off a tomato use a 3500k
i would cut a hole big enough to glue some plexy -glass for a nice view from the outside of the can. Lifting that light every time must be a pain in the ass when you want to just "look" at the plant and check progress... just my 2 cents..
@cruzin33 No. I did use howto videos from youtube on that topic to study indoor growth. Because that was the best source of information. But I don't grow that myself.
@burntbit Same. I've watched so many weed growing videos but never plan to grow it myself. For starters I can't even go near the stuff without getting a headache.
@DaveLowe28 I've known people who smoke such. And it gives me severe head aches as well. By the way, your comment insinuates that that's what this video is about. I found that those videos on youtube contain more useful information on indoor growing then anything else... but that is not my purpose in indoor green houses.
I need your help man... I have 8 citrus plant... they are about 2-3 years old... they were doing great I would keep them out all summer and bring them in when it got cooler... but now I move and the place I could keep them indoor for the winter is a basement with no sunlight... I have a few incandescent growing light bulds on a 10 hour timed cycle... but its not working man... I noticed some leafs and a lot of new growth falling off... help me dude...
@escupulario I think you may need more lighting. There is a balance to it. I think the rule of thumb is 100 Watt light bulb per 4 cubic feet. Also once you have enough light don't place them too close to the plant. If you can have reflective walls around the plant that will help the light balance out evenly over the plant. Use white walls if you can... many people use aluminium.
Great little set ups, thanks for sharing...am just planning and setting up my first indoor veg garden..which lights did you use in your fishtank? cheers :0)
"Zoo Med Daylight Blue Bulbs" from petsmart. You can buy them online. Get the 100 Watt light bulbs. Any more than 100 watts and it's too much for small containers... you'll dry out and kill everything.

you should hook up an atmega or something and program it to take temperatures and log them and change the light cycles to increase growth speeds
