One of the many amazing things about DiMeola's playing style is his uncanny capacity to play arppegios with a pick instead of with all his right hand fingers. That's damn difficult to do, especially that acurate and fast.
@mocell Hello, first of all: For playing Beyond the Mirage we have to TUNE THE 6TH STRING IN D, after that, the first chord is actually with the bass on the "new" E (2nd fret of the 6th string that we've tuned on D) the chord is: hold al the strings in the 2nd fret with the 1st finger, and, the other 3 fingers you put on this sequence: 2st finger: 2nd string; 3rd fret / 3rd finger: 3rd string 4th fret / 4th finger: 4th string; 5th fret. Hope you understood, this is my fav song of Al di Meola.
@mocell Almost forget: In this structure i have told you, for the first you play the chord as i teached you, and after you have to take off the 2nd finger from it's place (we can see Al's doing that in the video, watch closely the time when he takes off the 2nd finger from the place that it ocupies in the chord, for change a little the sound of the chord, wich have a very beautiful sound at all. That's all, man. In the video he moves the chord to the 7th fret (wich will have the A note on bass).
@Wolfmann007 thx man. the tuning was actually the only thing i need to know :) but thx for ur explanation. now i need to train the strumming. he is really exceptional.
@mocell its just an Em9...the 6th string is turned to D and he's barring the 2nd fret with his index finger (E 6th string,B 5th string and F# 1st string ). His middle finger frets the 2nd string on the 3rd fret (D), his ring finger frets the 3rd string on the 4th fret (B) and his pinky frets the 4th string on the 5th fret (G). The notes are in this order: E, B, G, B, D, F#...it's a voicing of E minor 9, and it sounds meatier because he has the low E string tuned to D so he can bar it ;)
Al Dimeola stood his ground when I saw him with John Mcglauglin and Paco lucia. He was was fast and clean on the Ovation Acoustic. really amazing. This was the last show from this great trio. The show was a t Lincoln Center.
@TheStruns: you got to enter to D'Addario website, then click artists and finally click Al DiMeola and you'll see what products he use ( more than one). All the best for you.
