I'm getting ready to do this to my Explorer taillights, any recommendation on what kind of tape to use? Will painters tape work ok or should I buy that expensive frog tape or perhaps something else even? Thanks for any replies.
@nickjwood84 Hey man, I actually used the blue painters tape, worked awesome, very sharp lines and I did the 3 stage tint as you saw so I blacked out the reflectors and then smoked the lights themselves. Dont waste money on the professional tape. Hope all goes well for ya, watch the video in the related videos by Johnson10, he does a very good step by step so there are no runs in it. I didnt have any runs, but I didnt do a vid on me actually sprayin. Just for extra help, its a great vid.

The reason for the V6 is a long story, but in short I HAD to have a truck or I would get fired from my job if ya follow where I am going. This was all that was available in my price range. Didnt want an old beater that would still get me fired cause it wouldnt start one day ya know. But gas is good, haha. And the muddin: I did get new tires, gettin Swampers next. But thats why we are T.R.M.L.
@darkflavour I do have your mentality though, I was gunna get the 4.6L but again money, it was $3K more, not worth it at the time, eventually I'll do a motor swap, Im good with mechanics, and they are easy to come by. I coulda got a 150 with the 5.4L, but the 5.4L is too much for a truck, they are good in the Expeditions. Right motor/car ratio if you understand, its wierd but with the bigger motor I wouldnt get as good MPG, tryin to push a heavier motor on top of the truck, the 4.6L is perfect.

@ratea5 Haha, hey man. I actually appreciate that you like and would use my idea. Unfortunately I did not have VHT Nightshades although I know its a way better product, get that if ya can. I got the rustoleum, there is a pic in the vid. I worked at AutoZone and that is what they had. But yea, just watch the vid and tape off only the reflector, that way you put a light "smoke" coating over the reflector which actually shows the light. His vids are awesome and he shows you everything from prep to install. And they turned out great. Mine are matte to match the rest of my truck when Im done with it, but he did the gloss coat which looks great too. Good luck!

@xTrickk Technically yes I did spray paint em, but I actually used the Rustoleum Spray Tint. At the time I worked at AutoZone, so I got what they had, although I know VHT Nightshades is a better product. I did it in 3 layers as you can see that way I blacked out the Reflector, had a dark smoked brake light, and a lightly smoked reverse light. Overall very simple. @EaStxVaNxiNc I know the baking method but I just aint comfortable putting my lights in an oven. I didn't sand mine, I just cleaned them really well with soapy water, dryed em off, let em dry in the sun, and then rub them down with denatured alcohol. I did three coats as you can see in the video, and I did it like painting a car, long slow strokes about 8-10 inches away from the lens. I just like when I can do something myself and make it look just as good.

@EaStxVaNxiNc Again, I am just fuckin with you, but technically it aint a sticker, tint is actually more like vinyl. Most people call it a "tint vinyl" any ways. One side is sticky but not like an adhesive like a sticker, you have to wet the surface first. The GATOR-OIL and The Real Mud Life are both 5 year vinyls made by my good friend GiGi. Until 5 plus years go by they will not fade or peel off and I've had em for a while already.
@thetrolllol Actually very well. It doesn't snow in Florida, but I mud this truck all the time and even after dried on mud and a rainstorm the tint/paint stays on. I purposely didn't clearcoat it cuz I want everything on my truck matte black and silver with green lights. Im gettin matte black rims and 35 swampers. thanks by the way.

@EaStxVaNxiNc Actually this shit is awesome. You have to remember it is not the paint that sucks, its the painter. A chain is as strong as its weekest link and clearly your paint is a good as the painter, which is apparently very shitty. I am not concerned with the money as I have said before, it's the fact that I do my own shit and it looks good and works just fine. Stop your bitchin.

@sfloridamudbogger im really lookin to do my lights if it really worked but i seen ppl sand it and all it jus dont work still runnie im jus gona buy them u can put them in the oven for real no jk and its will pro smoke them

@EaStxVaNxiNc I know the baking method but I just aint comfortable putting my lights in an oven. I didn't sand mine, I just cleaned them really well with soapy water, dryed em off, let em dry in the sun, and then rub them down with denatured alcohol. I did three coats as you can see in the video, and I did it like painting a car, long slow strokes about 8-10 inches away from the lens. I just like when I can do something myself and make it look just as good.

@sfloridamudbogger every after market tint for me and body shop, audio shop.body shop, im a tow truck diver n e place i deal with after market tint is a sticker

@EaStxVaNxiNc Again, I am just fuckin with you, but technically it aint a sticker, tint is actually more like vinyl. Most people call it a "tint vinyl" any ways. One side is sticky but not like an adhesive like a sticker, you have to wet the surface first. The GATOR-OIL and The Real Mud Life are both 5 year vinyls made by my good friend GiGi. Until 5 plus years go by they will not fade or peel off and I've had em for a while already.

@thetrolllol Actually very well. It doesn't snow in Florida, but I mud this truck all the time and even after dried on mud and a rainstorm the tint/paint stays on. I purposely didn't clearcoat it cuz I want everything on my truck matte black and silver with green lights. Im gettin matte black rims and 35 swampers. thanks by the way.
