Actually it came out in '93, along with so many other great prog-death records like 'Spheres' (Pestilence), 'Focus' (Cynic), 'Dimensions' (Believer) and so on...
Almost 20 years after, it's fair to say this is "old-school death metal", but back in 1992 this wasn't old school at all. Nocturnus, along with Atheist and Cynic, tried to do something different.
Those two guitarists were the best in death metal , and Dan was much better vocalist than Mike . This band , to me was the best death metal band of all .
@heyhellosalutation MIKE BROWNING was in morbid angel he's drummer/vocalist for this band i don't think he did the vocals on this album but he did on their first one..hes on the morbid angel album abominations of desolation pre alters of madness
I find it really interesting how this album was despised by the metal community and even some of the band members when it came out, yet these days most people I talk to prefer Thresholds to The Key. Shows how the metal scenes focus has shifted from brutality to technicality/melodicism. Great stuff, can see the foundations of melodeath as well as modern tech death here for sure.
i remember listening to this when it came out, myself and my friend agreed that thiswas the first song on the album we tought was actually catchy, until the solo starts, listen to how the solo steadily gets worse and worse until the song almost locks up completely, then they just say fuck it and go back to the chorus, we both loved the key, we wanted to love this too but we couldnt
@darkestfugue You took the words right out of my mouth the key was soooo awesome that this totally fell short. Fuck remembering when I bought the key when it came out damn that brings back a lot of good times!!
Actually the vocals in "Thresholds" are done by Dan Izzo. Browning only handled the vocal duties on "The Key". I'm glad they hired Izzo for this album, Browning wasn't really that good.
age has nothing to do with it, i listened to and enjoyed exodus when they had steve souza since i was 6 years old which later got me into death metal because of my dad. my point is age has nothing to do with what you like, especially when talking about music. i dont know why people always come on these message boards and act like their age means anything its a matter of opinion not age get it right retards
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Ok band...But....Something wrong with the vocals?
It should have something clean, either pure screaming, or pure singing, this is just awful singing, he doesn't growl, he just yells with a bad voice...
Does anyone know if they improved in their later albums? I love everything about this awesome music except for the vocals.
It's just typical 90's technical death metal voice. Just like you I have found Chuck Schuldiner's vocals anoying at first, but listen after listen I get used to this vocals. Now I like it. ^^
The first album, "The Key" is pretty cool. After "Threshold" the band getting more and more mediocre.
I actually enjoy these vocals. It's a thousand times better than most of the other metal bands out there, but to each his own. It's kind of Slayer-esque, but as the other stated, it's very similar to Chuck Schuldiners vocals.
@SlapphePikkur he doesn't suck, morbid angel sounds just like this. even death, to a degree. back then the genre was way more experimental, and it paved the way for what we are used to, so appreciate it. besides, it still KICKS ASS
ah..... this is the best 'paracetamol' i ever 'chew' ! Great band! their album " The Key" is the best ever. "Threshold" also a good album. i like drumming skills that Mike Browning possessed!
Oh wow, I found this song from another video and saw the art cover. I use to have this album back when I was in middle school. They were great!!!! Thanks for the memories.....This one, Aquatica and Subterranean Infiltrator were my favorites
Wow Mike Davis makes Trey Azagthoth look like a little child and thats saying something cause Trey's one of my favorite guitarists and is one of the best DM shreadders
i may seem like a jackass but the best bands of all time are bands like nocturnus, obituary, death, children of bodom, norther, kslmsh, looking st it objectivrly melodeath has kept its roots more than any other type of death metal i despise deathcore
Hehe, well Children of Bodom and Norther are just average melodeath... Not very interesting. I prefere Wintersun or old In Flames (and Dark Tranquillity... And At the Gates of course) in this style.
For good 90's old school death metal check Pestilence, Gorguts (The Erosion of Sanity and Obscura, but this one was release in 2000), Cynic (AWESOME !), Atheist,, Suffocation (of course), Immolation, Incantation and some scandinavian stuffs like Unleashed, Entombed, Dismember, Demilich, Convulse.
id say oldCOB is pretty interesting. their new stuff is cool too, but listen to something like kissing he shadows or bed of razors. and look up suffocation history channel commercial.
I know CoB, I've 2 records from them (Hatebreeder and Something Wild) plus a CD-R given by a friend (Are You Dead Yet). The 3 first albums are nice, but since few years I find these kind of music a little boring.
And their last stuffs sucks.
There is also a good band that I recommand to you : that's Funebrarum. If you like old-school scandinavian death metal you should check this band from New Jersey. ;)
cool ill check that out as soon as i get the sound on my computer fixed (or get to another computer). banned from heaven has some nice melodies on it imo.
try looking up some kalmah they are melodeath like COB or look up some Archeon. Im not directing this at anyone in particular but i mean archeon not acheron
Go look at their new cover album Skeletons in the closet. Im all for covers but when METAL covers POISON and BRITNEY SPEARS its time for that band to commit suicide
i liked cob up until about 2001, i started to grow out of them i guess. and their last cover album was basically their suicide. there's no going back to metal after that fucking album.
I listened to all your uploads from "Thresholds" and this song, which I heard last, confirms it. This is atleast a same level of masterpiece than their debut, whose very happy owner I am, was.
