It's a fabulous song and Roy is one of my all time favourite musicians but let's be honest his miming skills were second to none in the totally hopeless department.
its one of the reasons behind the song - roy wood wanted to use other artist influences in his song. also did you know that roy played every instrument and sung every note in this song? clever guy eh?
There was also a clip of him on TOTP doing this song in full Wizzard makeup and clothes - with a papier mache head of himself in same on shoulder. He says 'rubbish!' in the instrumental break in tribute to Eric Morecambe making the skull say 'rubbish!' in response to 'What do you think of it so far'?
I remember this song very clearly altough never heard it for about thirty yrs until about three yrs ago. The original TOTP film was with two Roy Wood singers with different hairstyles one at the piano and the other standing nearby. This made a virtue of the difference between the normal and enhanced sound of his voice which made this performance seem a bit arkward. If someone could unearth the other one???
To seventiesclassic. In your comment beginning with "There you go, I've done you a favour..", you've shown a tendency to over use and, indeed, incorrectly use the ellipsis. The use of full stops and new sentences would be more punctually correct. Do you not feel that one should focus on the content rather than be too eager to point out other peoples mistakes?
RW acknowledged both The Beach Boys and Neil Sedaka on the label of this 45 single. He is a master of pastiche - but at least he admits when he does it!
There was a wrong rumour that the beach boys sang on this but what really happened was when roy went to brian wilsons house to record the sax solo on its okay his daughters were in the yard singing this ti him .
@spacepatrolman Where did this story come from? In an interview he said he got to the studio just as they were leaving. They re-opened and set up for him so he & the guys could record their sax parts on "It's Ok". It also sounded like they never saw Brian, as he nevered mentioned him being there.
my favorite Roy Wood song - one of the best songs of the 70's - much better by a couple of universes than all the rap-crap I have to put up with at work
@spacepatrolman Rap didn't ruin the music business, it's what the next generation (the ones with the greatest spending power) chose as their music. All about giving the paying customers what they want. At one time people thought the Beatles and the Rolling Stones ruined the music business.
Not his best and the lip-sinking really turns this into a joke. I love the instrument switch though between Roy and Rick. Jeez, he was, and still is, so much better than this. At the time, Roy was one of the few genuine multi-instrumentalists. He should have given "The Move" another try before starting the Electric Light Orchestra gig, he and Jeff Lynne were just too different to continue collaboration.
What the fuck, are you some whiny-assed english professor? Go suck your own dick Poindexter. I don't mind debating differences in opinion, but I certainly have no time for punks like you, whose only vehicle for manhood is correcting my grammar and spelling. Moron? You are right in one respect; there surely is one lurking about!
............. and the cock crowed twice! The next time you visit your shrink, inquire as to the origins of low self-esteem and the the possible relationships you may have with Freudian stages of development. While doing so, perhaps you could play some Roy Wood softly in the BAKGROWND....... (laughingMYassoff)
There you go, I've done you a favour..you are now able to type in perfect English..most of what you said is actually total bollocks..but at least it makes grammatical sense, apart from the deliberate errors of course !
No it's alright, no need to thank me..glad to be of assistance.
You are right................. you obviously possess much more intelligence than I could ever hope for. I bow to your expertise in dealing with such lowly of human errors. You are a member of greatness amongst the dredges of humanity. I will look towards you for leadership in times of strife and hardship. You are master!
You're in the minority. A lot people think is one of his best. One of the America music magazine took a page and a half favorably reviewing and critique this.(It had that famous Dr. Norman Seeff portrait of him adjusting his glass, which later appeared colorize on a collection singles on Speed-Woody Records in the early eights)
The lip-sinching by him and Rick Price, who didn't play on the record, miming to a full band recording is quietly silly compared to the Wizzard TV shots.
No matter what comments come up here those of us who were teenagers and going to the dancing then will always love this music and all of the '70's stuff
The US single version which appear on United Artist Records was edited. It's no longer available and never appear on album or compilation that I know of.
Remixes tend to be received quite negatively by those who have a history with the original version. Grateful Dead fans are still pissed off that Jerry Garcia and Phil Lesh remixed The 1969 release "Aoxomoxoa" in 1971 (and the original tapes are lost0.
On the US release the 'B' side "Music to commit suicide by" was re-titled "Woodbe".
As referred earlier The A side "Forever" was edited to try an ensure it's running time didn't keep it from getting airplay. Apparently an act of futility.
I got mine by actually buying it direct from United Artists because I never found it in the stores.
If you read the record label, he thanks Neil Sedaka and Brian Wilson for their inspiration, ergo you a got a Beach Boy sounding recording with Neil Sedaka lyrics,
He must have hated doing this lip sync shows, most of them he plays he just makes a mockery of the whole event. As seen in this video with just him playing bass and his mate on guitar (who usually plays bass). Or in other videos where they have their fantastic costumes and play vacuum cleaners for the solos
Again, I don't care how well you ape Brian Wilson (Neil Sedaka's an embarassment, don't even mention him again) or how much you dig the 50s...this stuff doesn't hold a candle to Shazam, Looking On or Message from the Country. I know he THOUGHT he was getting back to the roots of rock - but the punks proved him wrong.
He was getting back to HIS roots. and novel concept, enjoying himself.
The punks didn't give a shit about the roots of rock before the stooges as a rule.
Sorry you're narrow mind not to find enjoyment in most of Roy's work in all genres.
Personally i find "Looking on" one of the weeke albumsr, which i always thought as their last or contractual obiligation album to finish off their Fly records contract.
this was my pet mouse archie's favourite song and eny time i hear it I this of him, because he used to go bannanas of his wheel as soon as I played the song
I'd love to see sheet music for all the instrument parts. I remember being "blown away" when I heard that Roy played all the instruments on this song. 30 years since I last heard this song and I still love it!!!
you are right on the button there krankiekat and estymomo. Such a talent .Does anyone know how Roy is ? The last i heard was that he had to give up performing due to ulcers.
That and how would you feel with "waterloo" being a copy of a certain roy wood composition !
Im off to dig out my "wizzards brew" from the loft.
This is my favorite Roy Wood song. The video version is even better as it does two versions of Roy Wood singing on the same screen which makes more sense with the different voice productions.
Roy Wood should have been a huge rock star and for a while there in the early 70's I thought he would, Boulders one of the greatest albums of all time went virtually unoticed, such a shame! The world was not ready for Wizzard's Brew either but WOW was that a killer album!
In the mid 60's to mid 70's Roy Wood created a pretty much unbeatable variety of stuff. Most if it was commercially successful, and I am fortunate that I grew up listening to the Move, early ELO, Wizzard and his own solo work. Very under rated these days, but greatness remains greatness, whether in the spotlight or not.
Top Of The Pops was at its best when people didn't even try to look as though they were playing live! I love this song. I guess Roy was trying to look like the Beach Boys there, as the song is a bit of a nod to them.
on 'rock family trees' a few years back, rick price talked very mournfully about the slow disolving of wizzard "until it was just me and woody." this must be from around that time. nice tune with, as usual, a killer bunch of modulations all thru the instrumental bit. wood is an imp!
I don't think it was at that time - I'm sure Wizzard had a couple more hits after this. It was just that Roy also had a catalogue of songs he'd written that weren't the Wizzard style so he also put out a couple of solo albums.
A real shame that this teriff song is only really known among 70s GLAM buffs....criminally, this is never played at all on the main radio stations, when other, excellent but overplayed-to-death tunes from this era are aired far too often.
Roy Wood is another one of those gems among the mire and so under rated and overlooked in his personal contribution to the british music scene it's criminal. When I die this track and California Man will be the perfect musical epitaff. Rock on Roy, God bless your genius
Well, the credits on the actual single thanked Neil Sedaka and the Beach Boys for their influence - Brian Wison and Neil both contacted Roy and thanked him for his acknowledgement. The other guy on the video is Rick Price - Wizzard bass player. As Roy played all the instruments himself on this recording as well as sung all the vocals, he/they are both, quite understandably, lip-syncing
you,re thinking of ANTHONY SHARP-----there wasn't a Prime Minister in 'CLOCKWORK' , but I assume you mean the old guy who feeds ALEX in hospital at the end of the film.
That's Rick Price. He played in the last Move line-up and was part of the original ELO along with Roy Wood. When RW left to form Wizzard, Rick came along too.
Thanks for your reply, but I checked it and that's not the song. The song may be The Move,
but it's a quite slow and melancholic piece - released and was on Top of the Pops around late December 1973 or January 1974 - only approx dates. May be you meant another song..?
Anyway, thanks for reminding me about The Move, as I've just rediscovered what great music they made.
Roy Wood has written some fabulous Beach Boys type tunes and "Forever" is up there with the best of Brian Wilson's songs. "Oh What A Shame" was another classic. Anyone got a video of that?
Apart from the fact Roy wrote and sang this paean (spelling?) as a tribute to both Sedaka and the Beach Boys - If Roy thinks they're worth honouring that's good enough for me. Not worth F words spadge, it's only rock and roll when all is said and done. Think BBoys, Sedaka & Spector et voila!
Respected the way he complemented Wizzard with a different solo career at that time. ps Tim Burgess out of Charlatans' dad anyone? Nah didn't think so !
1. I like the way that Roy is always glancing over at Rick Price throughout the song.
2. Roy’s shyness is obvious, while Rick seems to be there as a sort of prop.
3. Roy could have done this appearance solo, but he wanted Rick on stage with him.
4. Roy’s haircut and overall styling is excellent.
5. What they are both wearing is obviously fab.
6. Love the stripped back guitar and bass look.
7. Towards the end the girls dancing look so happy.
8. And of course the music itself if brilliant.

Roy Wood is another one of those gems among the mire and so under rated and overlooked in his personal contribution to the british music scene it's criminal. When I die this track and California Man will be the perfect musical epitaff. Rock on Roy, God bless your genius

You are absolutly spot on. It's obscene that this man's talent and versitility has gone unrecognised. But we know.

Does the other guy beside roy wood, singing? or is he just playing music?

You've got to be kidding. it's Jimmy Saville. Compere of 'Top of the Pops' in the 60's and 70's. Also host of 'Jim'll Fix It'.

Roy Wood - seriously underrated and a top guy. Buy up his back catalogue - you will not be disappointed!

One more thing..
Isn´t the presenter the same guy who acts as prime minister in A Clockwork Orange?
snusapan 4 years ago
No, see previous post for info.
ScotRanger1960 4 years ago
you,re thinking of ANTHONY SHARP-----there wasn't a Prime Minister in 'CLOCKWORK' , but I assume you mean the old guy who feeds ALEX in hospital at the end of the film.
rabsmiff 4 years ago
Yeah, that guy. Thanks!

His Hairyness himself:D
Somehow he reminds me of the singer in the hives. It´s something with the nose and eyes..

Don't know about the man behind the man, but Roy Wood, he's a genius....
omanmc 4 years ago 2
Reply to 'movilwagg' ~
That's Rick Price. He played in the last Move line-up and was part of the original ELO along with Roy Wood. When RW left to form Wizzard, Rick came along too.

I could watch this over and over again. Roy is the best. What I would give to be one of those girls at the front of the stage!

Hi,
Does anyone know a Roy Wood song that has the
chorus line 'she'll be there' - it is fairly melancholic and has a heavy cello section. Was in the charts possibly in 1973. Appreciate any feedback.
Thanks!!
proinsiaspad 4 years ago
it's a number by the MOve his earlier outfit
its called CURLY and the line is
I'll be there
spadge321 4 years ago
Hi,
Thanks for your reply, but I checked it and that's not the song.

Anyone got a video of that?
manatthewindow 4 years ago
I read this years ago, and to me it seems obvious that this is a tribute to the great Neil Sedaka
quacker1964 4 years ago
only in that neil sedaka was a beach boys tribute act!
coling57 4 years ago
there was fuck all great about Sedaka
he was the turd of rock and roll along with pat boone and fabian,,,
Roy Wood pisses on em all,,,
and his hair is far better too !!
spadge321 4 years ago 3
Apart from the fact Roy wrote and sang this paean (spelling?) as a tribute to both Sedaka and the Beach Boys - If Roy thinks they're worth honouring that's good enough for me. Not worth F words spadge, it's only rock and roll when all is said and done. Think BBoys, Sedaka & Spector et voila!
quacker1964 4 years ago 2
Blah de blah. This is a great song.
kirkwallboy 4 years ago
Respected the way he complemented Wizzard with a different solo career at that time. ps Tim Burgess out of Charlatans' dad anyone? Nah didn't think so !
