This was Judy's song but tonight and today I dedicate it to Miss Whitney Houston, who is now Somewhere Over The Rainbow, will miss you Whitney love and peace.
What a God-given talent,. She shows such raw emotion, heartbreak, and longing for a better life in this video. She never got the true happiness she so deserved.
this made me cry. stellar performance, and obviously she was connecting with this song on such a personal level, it breaks my heart. judy is a legend :)
I saw this on tv, maybe 20, 30, maybe even 40 years ago. I've been longing for it ever since. Thanx for posting. Maybe one day I can hear her and Bruddha Iz sing a duet of this one. Just maybe one day over the rainbow.........
How sad, she never obtained what she dreamed of when young, real happiness. It's sad to look back and feel ones life is hollow and lacking love, like she was clearly feeling as she was singing this song. I feel for her.
if there,s a god in heaven,,, never oh never has a human being more deserving, as having a right hand seat what a lady,,, and yes JUDY you where beautiful, qualities that are missing today, you put your children at the top of the pedalstall and kept them there,,, i once went down a very dark alley and nearly ended it all, I sat and listened to you sing,, im still here and i have a 4 year old son,,, thank you Judy GOD BLESS AND KEEP YOU XXX
I am 14 years old, i think it is disgusting what is on tv today, lady gaga, rihanna, i much prefer judy garland, frank sinatra, gene kelly ect... i think people my age should appreciate this beautiful talent, and we dont see music like this anymore!
I couldn't agree with you more honey! I'm 23 and have such a deep respect and admiration for Judy Garland and the many singers and actors that were around in her day, most of them came from humble backgrounds and they worked to become what they were and in the days of studio controlled entertainment it was absolute hell, but they did what the were told to do and they did it marvelously.
This performance is so different from her earlier performances.......after she lived life, struggled but her heart seemed so broken......and yet to have hope...that somewhere over the rainbow, there it is a better. Her heart was on her sleeve. I love it and it means more to me than the earlier versions because she seems so vulnerable and exposed. She is one of our greatest talents...too bad the younger generation doesn't appreciate it.....which is why they keep posting these insensitve posts
This is where I fell in love with Judy Garland. This exact clip brought tears to my eyes. That's when I learned the whole "Dorothy" thing was but one small part of the legend. Oh. The ending of this performance kills me .. . . .. . Thank You, Judy
we like to keep her to ourselves. don't cast your pearls among swine, so to speak. but the swine have picked up on it. if fact, hollywood is doing another movie. hey, don't let your kids listen to the trash that blank blank is brainwashing them with. so what if their frien jerel don't like you toe much. wake up america. it's all a numbers games.the devil is in the details.
it may be the most moving performance of a song ever! never has anyone connected with a song the way judy did with over the rainbow! she and this song together were truly a beautiful gift from god! it is a magical musical moment! a human miracle! judy is and always will b my #1 diva!!!!
Absolutely brilliant, emotional and unique! This was September 24, 1955 on CBS's Ford Star Jubilee. If I'm not mistaken, this was the year she had her son Joey, lost the Academy Award for her performance in "A Star is Born" and unfortunately was released from her Warner Brother's contract. This was a very emotional year for Judy and it shows in this performance.
Judy Garland was one of the most beautiful, talented women of this or any era. To know that she suffered as much emotional abuse as she did and still tried to portray herself as an exceptionally strong human being is a testament to her. Wherever you are, Judy, I hope you've come to realize how much you were truly loved, respected, and treasured by the people who mattered most: your fans. And I hope that your knowing this has brought you some form of peace.
If you didn't get chills from this you've been dead two years. The best performance I've seen. Israel rearranged it beautifully and ever since '39 we've heard it a million times from every direction.
Nothing today compares to the honesty and reality in singing with artistry and emotion that Judy gives. The penultimate example. You want to sing. This is how. You want to be believed, this is how. Oh how so many pale in comparison. If you aren't going to be emotional why sing? She was a babe as a child, given the rawest of deals in the name of money and yet inside her this enormous talent still lived and despite the poor treatment she received she is still willing to give more.
This is an example of a great artist, as she actually 'interprets' the lyric through her singing. This is not just a performance filled with contrived sentiment, but a complete expression of the human condition by a brilliant performer.
@plp1964- Yes this was 1955 on CBS's Ford Star Jubilee. The show was a 90 mins, live, color series that aired once a month on Saturday nights on CBS at 9:00 P.M., E.S.T. from the fall of 1955 to the fall of 1956.
On a Sunday the 22nd of June 1969, The World woke up to the News of Judy Garland's death. The news sent shock waves across the entire planet & for the 7 days the media paid homage to " A Great Lady who had the Ultimate Interview"! Judy, Your fans still mourn your passing. I have the comfort of knowing your spirit was embraced by GOD & that HE showed you HIS infinite peace & all that heaven has too offer you. U brought a lot of joy to me & I thank God for creating you. RIP on this 6/22/10
@keanufan09 This Woman was not perfect but she left us joy and if there is anyplace that she went, it is Heaven.GOD blessed this tiny woman with such a heart tugging singing voice. I LOVE AND MISS YOU, MISS JUDY GARLAND!
@keanufan09 Her story is really a tragedy.... She was such an amazing talent with so much to offer at such a young age... but because of Hollywood's pressure to be thin (even back in the 30's), she got addicted to those pills that eventually led to her death. This clip here is so amazing... it's like she is looking back to when she was young, wishing things could have been different, and she manifested all those thoughts and wishes into the song. Why can we have more Judy's in this world?

Why was she dressed as a "hobo" for this?

@cinderellacomplex7 Because, before the song she sung 'A couple of swells'
DebsTasha45 1 month ago
@cinderellacomplex7 "A Couple of Swells" came before this. Also of note, she performed the song like this in concert for years.
