awesome! I loved this game, used to love to fly the shrike around, flew so well. I used to take it underwater on this map to lose people sometimes haha, or in the grav cycle to get a speed boost (it shoots out of the water). I hope they fix the shrike in Tribes Ascend, decent game so far but the shrike flys like a brick, no skill or fluidity to it.

GOD!!! i miss this game best fps that has even been online or ever will be...did not like the shrike at first but got better at in the solo training and got a little better in game. best memory is me and 2 friends used a bomber one game 30 min game and for 20 mins of it we bombed the enemy so bad that they gave up and got Medium and Hvy armour on the hill side to try to stop us we won and i had 3K score. GOD i want to play this agen but comp went poof :-( Ahh the glory days

Great video and thanks for the post, It would be nice to see some sharper competition for you up there though. I clocked plenty of hours in a Shrike and when evading a pursuit I wouldn't make sharp turns bleeding off all my agility, it was shallow evasive turns and hill hugging so my attacker couldn't lead me without hitting the ground. Until I was out of sight of course and then it was full stop about turn and let him fly into my guns :)

You were one of the good ones, there were a handful of people that would force me out of a bomber and into a shrike, because sometimes there was just no bombing with a good shrike pilot in the skies. Unfortunately this is what eventually also drove me to stop playing, it boiled down to me falling back to a shrike to take down the other shrikes some 90% of the time, and as fun as it was - you can only spend so many years forced into a shrike before it wears on you enough to just stop.

Oh, you're one of THOSE people! I always sniped, and the shrikes LOVED ramming me. There really was nothing I could do to get away from them.

Except in Renegades mod: just before they hit me, I'd put down a deployable blast wall and make them crash :D

I got good with the tank--I just found that for reaching objectives, it made a bigger difference (i.e.: sustained, heavy, long-rage mortar fire).

Try TtribesnextDOTcom. They took over the master servers business so to speak. Down load a small redirect file patch, install it, register, and you're off flying the shrike again spinfuser in hand. I don't know why Sierra had to screw us so horrifically with T:V, but they did. Unreal with jet packs and cheater infested servers. T:V was nice looking, but lacked everything that made tribes TRIBES. Good to get a SP game out of the deal though. We need a new TRIBES game Sierra.

I remember the shrike =P I was really into ground skimming with em. Gotta say though that the guys getting owned in this are very poor pilots while ya got a good steady aim. My strategy was always do an immediate dive at the ground soon as i got fired at and skim the edges of ridge lines till I broke line of sight. These guys just keep on flying as if nothings going on.

You're good at flying the shrike. Before the game died I was quite the light armor dueler. I enjoyed the grav cycle though.

My favorite part of the video was when you caught the other pilot on the nose of your shrike lol.

I didn't have that much time to devote to it. Usually 2 hours an evening. Very few could stand toe-to-toe with me on my server, but there was that occasional really good pilot, and like my earlier comment, those usually ended up being 50/50 depending on who spotted who first. :)

Yeah, I think I did remove the AA from the gunship, but I thought I remembered putting chaingun on it. I forget now. I think the reason was because they kept shooting themselves down. Otherwise the mobile AA was cool. I thought about putting missiles but that just seemed wrong. :)

Man, I'm glad it got some good play.

When I toyed around with it myself, I just loved flying the Owls.

Lets see if I can describe this map real quick. On the top you got your usual wide open hilly area. On one side some pillars, but what set it apart is at each spawn area was a downward tunnel. This led to an underground playground for people who could get in. It was a little difficult to get down there, but at the center of some tunnels was a HUGE enclosed room with pillars every which way. Kind gave the better people somewhere to play while not slaughtered new folks. Out of room lol.

We had to tweak some very minor things...Fire rate...energy consumption on just a couple ships. Don't recall if it was you or the public who changed gunships, but they were changed from aa turrets to plasma. That was a mistake in my opinion I LOVED dodging the aa turret gunships. Though they did end up killing themselves a lot hehe. There were Some simply amazing custom maps made too. My bud kryand made the best though.

Yeah, it must have taken off after I stopped playing. When I lost my free-hosting for "NecroBones T2", I kept playing for a while on HV and then eventually stopped. I remember seeing an empty server running it occasionally, but I had no idea it became popular!

Dang, it warms my heart. :) I hope the balance was good on the vehicles. I had to use intuition rather than multi-player testing for the most part.

Heck man for at least 2 years(i do believe) there was always at least one 32 man server and it was always full. Best time for aerial dogfight had 4-6 servers totaling about 100-150 players all the time. Doesn't seem like much but thats all the servers we could get going lol. Had a pretty die hard following. So yeah kudos for creating that game type even if you never dragged your butt in there(that I saw).

Like I said though tribes next. Seems they are trying to bring tribes 2 back. Theres also a little talk of an aerialdogfight server popping up. The move to classic and lack of aerial dogfight servers is the reason I moved on from tribes 2 in the first place. They also have a forum there if you want to find some other old shriking pilots.

Yeah it was pretty rare for me to meet my match too. Most of the time I was clearing the sky. So not really tooting your own horn, so much as joining the club... lol :)

Not to toot my own horn, but there were VERY few pilots who actually challenged me. I could probably count the folks on one hand. After finding out about aerial dogfight thats pretty much all I did...When you can dodge 3 shrikes, an owl, and the gunships all on ya at the same time a 1 vs 1 seems easy.

Really though I could probably go on and on about shriking in the old days, but theres not enough room in these posts to do so lol. You might want to google tribes next. My rusty butt is there.

JetSolo on HV was the only one I never shot down. Only fought him like 4 or 5 times though, that I can recall. I think most of the time we stayed clear of each other, or ended up on the same team (which was frightening, I'm sure, for the other team to see).

Most of the time, if I found another really good pilot, it was a 50/50 shot, depending on who spotted who first. With regular pubbers, I'd keep the skies pretty clean if they weren't careful. :)

lol! I never got banned, but then I spent over 90% of my time on my own server (NecroBones T2). People cussed me out or accused me of cheating occasionally. Most just simply learned to watch their back on my server, which forced me to get better.

I remember getting a shrike off my tail a few times by leading it right into a bomber or transport on their team, destroying one or both in the collision.

Well I did make one demo, but that was long since lost. It was way back when unfriendly skies was the only real aerial dogfight server. About 3 buddies and myself fighting about 30-40 pubbers.

The most amusing thing I remember to this day though was leading a missile shot from a bomber into itself. Or getting banned from HV servers for killing the admin over and over again. They claimed I had some kind of autoaim because I killed him while he was dodging in just a couple shots.

No kidding on the crazy stuff. I did a lot that I never recorded. I used to hug mountains so tight that the polygons would break up because they were right next to my face. I lead people into death-traps between and under structures that only I was precise enough to fly through. Sometimes defended myself against 3 attacking shrikes at once. Led missiles into enemy shrikes, etc. Good times. :)

Yeah trust me using the shrike blaster especially after they changed it to crisscross took skill. And that "sir" person renegen1 is thinking of was my buddy sir vert. Its a shame he quit way early in the games life...he was my only competition for awhile.

And yeah it does bring back some good memories. I loved shriking...Makes me wish I had made videos. I used to pull off some crazy stuff. Incase any of ya were curious this is/was Wildcard.

Yeah, people who haven't played, or haven't played in a long time tend to not realize how difficult it was to master aiming the shrike guns. I used to strafe guys on the ground a lot too, but my specialty was anti-air and ramming. :)

I also remember this really big ace, I think his name was Sir something. His stat page was insane, amazing statistics. He was also equally good at shooting down people from his Shrike, now that's skill! I loved running down snipers atop mountains who didn't spot me while not crashing my plane. Some maps like Katabatic you could even run people down on ground level.

Nice vid, good memories. I used to be pretty good at Shrikes too. I'm impressed by your kills, less than 5 seconds to kill most of them and very few shots miss. As he said, it's not that obvious. It takes patience to get that steady hand and good judgement to know where to lead. My career was a bit plateaued by only ever reaching 20 FPS but I was pretty good too. Anyone remember that vehicle only mod? My best memory is a lava map where I single handedly beat 3 planes tailing me.

Thanks, yeah, the first half of it is from a mission where I felt I had finally stepped across the threshold from being an "ok" pilot to being a good one. I had a bit more experience by the second mission used in this recording. Definitely not easy to fly that way without lots of practice! :)
