Best winger ever dude was so fuckin fast you couldnt miss him or he would run the whole field and score also he was a big bloke so he was hard to put down as well from close range a natural try machine
No disrespect to Martin - who was a great winger.
But I remember him as being a shade below a winger like Eric Grothe because his defense was always bit suspect. Among Eric G's highlights are these amazing run-down, where he covers 80 meters of the field to pull down his opposite winger in the opposite corner.
Still - Chariots was a great winger. Probably a bit under-rated. But like so many British players of his era, just a bit underdone in the defense department.
Secondly, a Great vid without THAT Wembley try, or any of the ten he put past Leeds that time (sorry, does that still hurt?)
Thirdly, as a Wiganer when growing up I didn't know any black kids, there weren't any at my school, but Martin Offiah was a hero to all of us. There were some pretty bad attitudes to race up there and probably still are, but if a kid let rip with one of their idiot parent's racist attitudes, you could point to Chariots Offiah to prove them wrong.
Even when he was in his thirties and shot he was still better than 95% of the wingers who have or will ever play the game. We just dont make them like this guy anymore!
@2SXC2H8 And your point is exactly...? Martin Offiah is Black AND White - for Widnes. He had his best days at Widnes (despite what many Wiganers might think!) where he is still regarded as legendary. He the RL man on Sky News now
@ianuk2008 martins tries were something special he had outstanding pace and backed up really well but my vote will always go to ellery hanley a complete allrounder who scored most of his tries in the centre of the field making it easier for the conversion
these boys should be in that widnes team now far better than the fannies down there now, these lads were proud to be widnes not like the tits there now
A true legend of the game that sould never be forgoten!!. Compared to wingers of today Offiah stands out on his own. Yeah alot of his tries were due to the hard work of the forwards, but the man still had to be there!!!. When a half break was made you just knew Offiah would be the one to finish it off!!!.
Me dad went to school with Offiah. Although he was like 3 years below my dad. He was brilliant, i think my dad played against him though lol. My dad must have go his ass kicked...
A good winger always takes his chances and this guy scored every chance. Bullet speed but good reading of game to. What winger wants to be up against a guy who can can burn him easily ? No one.
can someone tell me wat martin ran a 40 meter and 100meter sprint in wat times please....i rekon a few nrl players would give him a good run 4 his money
In 1993 at wigan we had a chairty sprint with all the fast wingers in the rl at the time and offiah won under 10 seconds but to be fair the lengh they was running was a pad untill 100 mrts ,he pace was unreal but he could never tackle but in them days the minute he got the ball no matter where he was on the field he would score .
I am a Widnes fan & I too saw him in all his glory. But its this this under 10 secs for 100m I can't belteve.
Don't get me weong he was quick, very quick indeed.
But 1992 Linford Christie became the first british man to dip under 10 secs for 100m & he was an olympic sprinter. So I myself can't believe Martin did it 1 year later.
To my knowledge only 4 britons have ever gone under 10 secs, and He's not one of them. Sorry.
oh and lol he scored more for wigan than he did for widnes just thought id get that in as i see theres no wigan trys on there and i know u widnes lads are still all starey eyed about him :)
@bobnudd lol he did but if u look at the stats widnes played 145 scored 181 thats 13 times less than he played for wigan yet only 5 tries less.SO HIS STRIKE RATE WAS MORE POWERFULL AT WIDNES HAD HE PLAYED ANOTHER 13 TIMES FOR WIDNES HE WOULD HAVE SMASHED HIS 186 TRIES HE SCORED FOR U I SAY HE WOULD HAVE HIT 200 FOR WIDNES BACK THEN.WE BOTH HAD GREAT SERVICE OUT OF HIM BUT US JUST THAT BIT BETTER AND YOU HAD TO PICH HIM FROM US LOL SO EAT MY SHORTS.WIDNES FOREVER
@bobnudd@bobnudd lol he did but if u look at the stats widnes played 145 scored 181 thats 13 times less than he played for wigan yet only 5 tries less.SO HIS STRIKE RATE WAS MORE POWERFULL AT WIDNES HAD HE PLAYED ANOTHER 13 TIMES FOR WIDNES HE WOULD HAVE SMASHED HIS 186 TRIES HE SCORED FOR U I SAY HE WOULD HAVE HIT 200 FOR WIDNES BACK THEN.WE BOTH HAD GREAT SERVICE OUT OF HIM BUT US JUST THAT BIT BETTER AND YOU HAD TO PICH HIM FROM US LOL SO EAT MY SHORTS.WIDNES FOREVER
He was the fastest winger i have ever seen at wigan and scored countless amout of trys with the world beating side we had back then but i tackle he could not and when iro went to leeds i watched him run into touch to get away from iro but no one could match his speed and from the wingers we have today no one will.
@1980Grafik I agree with your "last year of the great wingers" comment about Martin Offiah. He was superb and the Widnes and Wigan teams he played in were the last great teams of the Rugby League I was brought up with. The whole complexion of the game has changed with the advent of Super League. As you say it's all brute force and the players are all of similar size, weight and speed.
Yeah he ran like the wind but didn't make it as a great at international level- I remember seeing him drop the ball on various occasions. Also, I don't think I ever saw him pass a ball (yeah I know - he didn't have to)
goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood i love you can i shag you martin
He was very good but I find it hard not to point out that he was very often the man on the spot after everyone else had done all the hard work. The reason he is very rarely touched before he scores is not just that he's quick but that his team-mates have taken all the punishment and put him in possession of the ball with 5 metres to run.
There's no denying that Offiah was a great rugby league player and I would never begin to deny it. What I'm saying is that he was very often the man on the end of some great work by his forwards and the inner backs. There's is no denying that he could turn a potential tackler inside-out but may I refer you to Greg Inglis, Billy Slater and Jonathan Thurstans who can invent their own tries as well as take the soft ones on offer... I've always loved Martin but I still maintain he was over-rated...
great player but he dint make it easy for the likes of barrie mcdermott he bullied him when mcdermott got his transfer to wigan for only 26 000 or something but big mac showed him both legends but barrie the best prop i ever seen and he from widness the meanest and biffest props come from the likes of widness leeds

I was lucky enough to see Martin in action many times for the fabulous Widnes team of the late 80s/early 90s, along with legends like Kurt Sorensen, Tony Myler, Jonathan Davies etc. To my mind the greatest club football team across all codes I have ever seen........and I'm a Man U fan !!
Martin Offiah,Billy Boston,Wally Lewis all incredible players whose obvious talentwas not recognised by RU selectors; and went on to become immortal RL stars.

Yo seriously? Can i ask you a favor? My dad went to school with him, he was like 3 years above him though. Does he remember a Paul Cook? I think he was a hooker. He probably doesn't remember him though.
not just a gteat finisher but he went looking for the ball look at the gb tries on this recording lots of them scored in the middle of the field also his catching was exellent as a rhino he broke my heart many times but was true class not bettered yet
I Saw Offiah play many times for Widnes where he was at his best. Best winger I have seen in either code. Look at that last try in video clip where he scores against Wigan. How many wingers could have scored in that situation? Might be wrong but I think it was Steve Hampson at fullback for Wigan who he rounded at the end. Hampson was fullback for GB at the time and renowned for his pace! People said Offiah's defence was poor but as an attacking winger, I have still yet to see an equal.
It was hampson at full back he went round but hampson wasnt renowned for pace it was mark preston (5)who was chasing him who was the speed king for wigan,i was at this game watching wigan.widnes were awsome at this time, could score from anywhere on the pitch from 1-13,A great time in rugby league this.

Last of the great wingers.
Today's wingers are just brute force. No pace, no class, no skill, no step, no nothing.
Remember the old Nike advert?
The hands can't catch what the eyes can't see.
How many of today's wingers would warrant that?
