Having a 5th year Senior as a backup with plenty experience is a blessing in disguise. Plus it's obvious that he's developed. McElroy may have been a first year starter, but he was super smart. That ties along with his decisions with his throws. McCaron made some tight throws that might have been picked if it would have been someone else.
