Not very humble to make a five minute tribute to Carl Sagan talking about humility, only to sign your OWN name at the end of it. This video should be called "Irony - Carl Sagan".
After hearing all of Sagan's wisdom, I would love for everyone arguing about how the universe came to be to stop. No matter how you look at it, Sagan's words apply to everyone. The creationists can take something from this because of the church's teachings on humility.
As a creationist listening to Sagan's words, I agree with him that humans ought to have great humility. The bible doesn't encourage any arrogant pride. Many of it's passages state just how small and insignificant humans are. However, Sagan's final statement only holds if one ignores the biblical message, which is that despite our smallness and insignificance, God did care very much for us. That's not the basis for any human pride. It's the basis for profound thankfulness.
Sagan's final message ignored the biblical message you mentioned for the same reason that science ignores any idea that has no observable proof. Plain and simple. ;)
" ...science ignores any idea that has no observable proof."
Of course. But much of what is concluded about humanities place in the universe isn't based on science either. It's the philosophical conclusion of the materialist worldview. That can only be concluded if we ignores the serious unresolved problems with respect to naturalistic origins explanations. But having ignored those issues, some conclude simply from the universes size, that life has little significance.
The fact is that science itself doesn't say too much at all about these issues. The disagreement is predominantly a philosophical one. Both philosophies (materialism & theism) can quote scientific evidence they claim backs their side of this debate.
As a creationist, I'm arguing against the idea that the Biblical worldview encourages inappropriate pride with respect to our place in the universe. Rather, our worldview encourages an attitude of thankfulness.
As for cosmology itself, that's far from settled at the moment. All models have unresolved problems. Many cosmological models that seem to fit observations can exist. We can have universes of infinite size, or of finite sizes, which have edges and a centre. Surprisingly, quantized redshift patterns in distant galaxies indicate that our region of space is roughly in the centre of huge concentric shells! That data certainly doesn't fit the line Dr. Sagan popularized on TV.
Sorry, but one more thing is important to mention about science. Going back to the original point, you said that science ignores ideas that have no observable proof. Correct. However, to say that science ignores some unverifiable phenomena, is a different thing from saying that science shows that such unverifiable phenomena don't exist.
At present we can't verify God's existence, so it's outside of science. But we also can't yet verify if abiogenesis took place either...
No one is arguing that abiogenesis as a field of study isn't science. Also, I grant that there are techniques being used to investigate whether or not abiogenesis is a feasible process, or not. (Same thing applies for much (not all) of what is claimed about evolution as well).
The point is that just because abiogenesis say, is being investigated scientifically, we cannot yet claim it actually took place, until it's proven. (We also can't claim 100% that it didn't happen!)
So even though it's claimed that science ignores something without observeable proof, many choose to accept abiogenesis for example, as the most scientific explanation of what actually took place in the past. Despite the positive spin often played to the public, facts are that no one has yet shown (despite some excellent scientific research) results that come even close to demonstrating abiogenesis to be feasible.
Despite that, most materialists do believe it happenned!
if god really exists he is a sadistic creature that acts like a child with a magnifying glass near an ant hill. think about it he creates life but allows millions of people and his supporters die in wars madeical problems and natural disastors i dont want a god like that
If you have told one lie, that makes you a liar. If you have stolen one thing, that makes you a thief. JESUS said; if you look at a person with lust, you commit adultery in your heart! Ever used GOD's name in vain; then you are a blasphemer and can't enter GOD's kingdom! Rev 21v8 says; "All liars will have their part in the lake of fire!" The bible says; No thief or adulterer will inherit GOD's kingdom! You broke GOD's laws; but JESUS paid your fine! Repent, and trust the Savior!
Please visit my channel for the unpopular truth about homosexuality.
A person does not need hatred or any kind of phobia in order to acknowledge important differences between heterosexual attraction / behavior / marriage / adoption and homosexual attraction / behavior / marriage / adoption. Even non-religious people know this.
Homosexual activists, with support from the media, have succeeded at framing themselves as noble victims; it's an effective way to push a social agenda.
@phinny5608 I really don't, I just recieved it as a christmas gift a few years ago (a very welcome gift, to say the least). I looked around a bit, though, and it looks as though the audiobook version is actually out of print, so I guess you'd have to look in places like eBay. Sorry. :(
Heads up guys, theres a sequel to "cosmos" planned for a 2013 release. It will be produced by Ann Druyan (sagan's widow", seth mcfarlene and will be shown primetime on fox. and guess who the host is? The godfather of science himself Neil Degrasse Tyson!
I am always very moved by this...I sometimes forget the wonderful beauty of being...how fortunate I am to exist. How astounding it is that we live in such a rich universe...and how unreasonable it is to believe we play the lead in the drama of the universe.
I love watching Carl Sagan and have seen the Cosmos many times. Here on youtube I have seen lots of other things about him, but Ive never seen this. I very much enjoyed this, as I do all of the words Carl Sagan has to say, but this message is of utmost importance for all of humanity. The images you attached to go along with the words were terrific! great job!
I saw Carl Sagan video . This man he is really handsome . I think he was a lucky guy when he was 20 or 19 years old. i think all the girls on that time where fallen in love with Carl Sagan . Lool i can't imagine this scene.
