I think our country is going though a hero syndrome, as if somehow they can stop any act of crime before it has occurred. Nobody likes the bad guys but we loose something more when we operate like this.
The ethical guidelines of the APA, although in principle sound, are none the less, in practice, very nebulous. There are abuses that take place by psychologists and of psychiatrists. The ethical framework so guiding the profession is self-serving.
apa has also question the legitimacy of recovered memories, calling into question many trauma survivor's truthfulness just when they need hope and understanding. This has led in some cases to blaming the victim, and the abuser suing the therapist.
I will be sending this to all of my colleagues for whom I have email addresses. This is why I dropped my APA membership; I was considering rejoining but will not--the final, current response by the organization has been too little and much too late. I will join Psychologists for Social Responsibility, a group I have been associating with at a local level. Thanks for making this documentary available.
This isn't the first time the APA has stepped out of line. They were involved in the US eugenics movement too through their promotion of culturally specific and totally worthless IQ tests which were used as a basis for tens of thousands of forced sterilisations in the USA right up until the 1970s. Maybe its time that the ethical psychologists left the APA and founded their own organisation.
I wish we had more people like you guys.
