This scene was amazing. I knew from this I was in for a treat with this show. It's amazing how different the show is in 1965 than 1960 because society was moving so quickly in those 5 years.
@SagaciousSilence Oh yes America of yester year was awesome. What with asbestos. Vietnam War. Lead pain. Segregation. AND excessive smoking clogging up my public resturants. Yup things are hell today comapred to now

just a morbid theoretical question here....I wonder......If the decrease in smoking (and there is a significant decrease since the 1950s/60s) has been a contributing factor in Social Security going broke (or heading to broke). Millions of people are living longer thus heavily draining the Social Security system......just a thought. Anyone have any thoughts about this
@inkey2 No quitting smoking is a drop in the bucket for reason social security. is falining. People just live longer and there are more of us, which would have happened anyways with better food, better living conditions, and better medicine. Smoking is only one little factor. A puddle in a sea of factors. And to say that "Ah people should die so social security may live" is a stupid concept to begin with. It's like saying why should I take a shower when im only gonna smell tomorrow? Think,
@POTATER1228 well, people are definately living longer now. When social security was first implimented nearly every adult smoked and at that time people were not exected to live much past 65
@inkey2 To think smoking of lack therof his the main reason for better longevity is to be misinformed. People were slowing living longer and longer with each generation for centuries. Back a few generations, 40 was considered geriatric. Hell in some places it still is, Like Mozambique. so your idea that the decrease in smoking has been a contirbuting factor in the "fall" of social securtiy is gravely mistake
@HoneyChild Yeah I agree Honey Child! it wasn't all Carnaby Street and Madison Avenue in those swinging times. Great music but more sexism, more racism....only there was more innocence and the clothes were rad!
"My wife hates it- Reader's Digest says it'll kill you." (Pause for a scoff and a brief lol) "Ladies love their magazines." (Lolololol, contemplation of womens' inconsequence in the matters of science.) Ahhh... the '60's.
the scenario with the waiter reminds me of an incident in Orlando, Florida in 1964. I was in a Jordan Marsh department store in the Boys' Clothing section where two Black boys were looking at the clothes. The White sales lady immediately steered them to the merchandise that looked a little more gaudy than the norm, explaining that "All the Colored Boys dress this way". So one of them asked her, "Oh, really? What color are they?" She was dumbfounded on several levels, and left them alone.
This show reminds me of being a kid. I love the era. And Joe Hamm is wonderful. The writers cram more info about the era into one speech than other shows do in a whole scene. And it is all so factual. I remember my doctor smoking while he examined me. Can you believe that????
@Tones4me It's all factual with one nagging exception. The "It's Toasted" slogan has been around since 1917 and not 1960 like in the show. Mildly annoying, but not a deal breaker. It still is a pimple on the face of the "Mad Men is historically accurate" argument though.
@bigstevesteve15 I didn't know that. You should send this to the show and somebody should use these little mistakes for the extras on the DVDs. They didn't use the etchasketch toy since it hadn't been invented for another months from the date it was shown on the show.
@bigstevesteve15____ i caught that same goof....."its toasted".... immediately. I used to be an avid Lucky smoker back in the day......yeah that irked me a bit
Its so long since I watched this scene- can't believe they begun introuducing so many themes in such a short space of time- like the whole salvatore is gay thing. Such an amazing show coming to UK in TWO DAYS can't wait.
Is Jon Hamm not the most charismatic guy you've seen in years he's a throw back in looks and deamenor to old hollywood and im not saying that because he's in a period piece series.
Well, I think it really helps, because I remember him from Providence as the sister's fireman boyfriend, and then from The Division. He was good-looking, definitely, but not so suave and polished and just... so powerful, so much gravitas. I think you can't underestimate the power of a sharp suit, a fedora, and the boatloads of confidence this character has (that his others didn't).
@jazzlady40 I agree. I think it's in part because he was a teacher and so has an education--a lot of these current actors just screwed around and got very lucky, Jon Hamm has been in this industry for a while, and has worked his way to dominate his roles the way he does.
