None of his methods worked. We have a lower dropout rate because kids are wasting a way in the school until they're 20 years old. We have a higher graduation rate because kids are graduating despite being illiterate.
Look at it this way; few NYC teens have after-school jobs. Did Bloomberg ever use his wealth to put the kdis to work?
NO!
He happily cut off money to youth employment programs.
Least you think this is a "minority educational issue" it is not. The is a systemic cultural condition of youth culture period.Rebellion and mistrust just for the sake of rebellion. Somehow we've gotten it twisted where we've made the culprits of the crime, namely of NOT wanting " to learn the VICTIMS of a teachers "poor performance" and "inability to MOTIVATE??" This motivation once came from the HOME FIRST but that's the "good ole days" I guess.
The average teacher must now go into the classroom with the burden of not only teaching unruly, disrespectful students, but also have to deal with the reality that in some cases the PARENT will not even be their ally in their child's education. Even with this knowledge NOW underpaid teachers are made to feel it is THEIR PERSONAL FAILURE if a student who REFUSES instruction does not LEARN. Where is the compassion and SENSE in this line of thinking?
If a child doesn't come into the school system with the basic behavioral skills of respecting an authority figure, then they cannot LEARN PERIOD. Because they're already starting out in a metal atmosphere of disrespect. Even In AA Groups which is the "REAL WORLD" individuals take ownershi0p for THEIR behavior FIRST and THEN healing comes. Students MUST be WILLING to learn so the teachers can do what they've been trained to do.
Im all for holding professionals accountable for their results, but teaching students isnt like selling hot dogs where you give out so many units and get a financial result. Teachers have to deal with an army of unmotivated students who often are products of dysfunctional families who send them off to school to be glorified daycare centers where the students lack the BASIC behavioral skills to listen to authority figures PERIOD starting with their PARENTS.
