"In the closing months of World War II, a young American lieutenant, named Charles von Stade, was killed in Germany when his jeep ran over a land mine. Six weeks later, at a hospital back home in New Jersey, his young widow, Sara, gave birth to a daughter, Frederica, who would grow up to become one of the most acclaimed singers of her generation.
Frederica von Stade never knew her father, but the love letters he sent his young bride from the front survived. "
Quello ch'io provo vi ridirò; è per me nuovo, capir nol so. Sospiro e gemo senza voler, palpito e tremo senza saper.
I've heard so many do this and Rinat Shaham is my favourite I must say.. Rinat brought the actual "teenage" angst the part requires... understated. Love von Stade's voice but for me, she is just not believable in this part..
@goblinonacloud You are obviously biased because of your favorite singer.
however, your preference has nothing boyish. Instead sings this piece with a slightly uneasy vibrato as opposed to the boyish crystaline palpitation of Von Stade.
Frederica von Stade has made history singing this part and it is obvious here why she has!
To dismiss her as not believeble shows again that you are not judging with knowledge and understanding but by arbitrary choise. Change your attitude. You are missing a lot!
I think I know what you're saying. I had the same sense. She isn't pushing the sound out.
Instead, it's floating weightlessly out of her, on currents of air.
That's the best I can describe it.
To this amateur voice student at least, a baritone, that is the Holy Grail. Among male vocalists, probably Pavarotti came closest to that ideal of utter transparency.
this is one of the three best versions of Voi Che Sapete. She is a superstar with an engelic voice. Her facial expressions are perfect. She is a classic Mezzo because of her range in this song. Clearly beautiful. Her pronunciation of the words are perfect also. You have no idea of what you speak. Von Stade, Bertoli and Ewing perform this song with beauty and grace. Three best renditions ever.
sorry but this is a soprano not a Mezzo !!! and pronunciation is bad, too bad for someone who sings in such a level! plus in many parts she's out of tune, simply to high...
She is absolutely fantastic!!! She blows me away! I'm a music major in college and I have this song in my repertoire this semester. She is definately my inspiration for this aria!
This & Figaro's first song are my favorites :) I love the cast in this opera, especially marcellina, cherubino, & dr. Bartolo. Please post the same opera with lyrics :( I only saw this in class, I'm a freshman in high school taking fine arts.
3 beautiful ladies on stage together...what a treat! And I don't mean just their physical appearances. All 3 of them sang beautifully in this production (I watched this whole production on DVD before).
I love the Paris Opera version for the "look" of it, and of course, I'd take any opportunity to hear Flicka. But, this was by far the better version for her, vocally. Listen to the richness in her voice and see the joy on her face- gets me every time! Thanks for posting this...
I also love the 1980 version, but I think hands down this one is superior vocally. The other one is a bit dry and marred by a few little pitch problems. This one is luscious, creamy and right on. Erotic.
I literally have goosebumps. I've listened to so many different performances of this, but I always come back to von Stade! No one sings Cherubino like Flicka!
I recall, now, hearing this in a recording years ago, and subsequently hearing many other Cheribino renditions, feeling that, while they were very good, they seemed less supernal, celestial and divine. Cecilia, Maria, Susanne and others are outstanding, too, in their ways, but Frederica holds a special place in my heart.
I agree with you buttertartlover. While all her performances of this aria that I have viewed are wonderful, I especially love this, especially the expression around 2:40...Thank you for posting!
This was actually the first production of nozze di figaro that I've seen, I became addicted to it; however now I am spoiled, and find it difficult to watch any other production!
Von Stade is without a doubt the best Cherubino ever. And this is one of the best performances of Le Nozze di Figaro. Dame Kiri Te Kenawa is wonderful as the Countess also.
¡Ah!
Simplemente divinissima...
