I have a Soundtech speaker that our band has used for 13 years all together, and being dropped so many time dislodged the magnet just enough that the voice coil rubs and gives everything an actually cool fuzzy distortion. When it goes I'm getting an EV. I like your videos man, you have an affection to the sounds side of things and that's cool, our band used to be a part time DJ service at one time and it was pretty fun while it lasted. Rock on man.
I know you fucking hate this question but what's the song name... Yeah I know you want to rip my eyes out now but Please PLEASE PPPLLLLLZZZZZ Can i have the song name
Yea always when i go shopping a new, or old speaker, i check if it has foam surrounds. usually cheaper speakers have foam surrounds, which may rot in 10yrs or so. so try to avoid them. those are actually easy to fix, if they're worth it.
I never liked foam surround speakers b/c of this issue b/c I had a set of car stereo speakers and the same thing happened to them. I have a couple of mini capsule ipod speakers they are mono and one has a radio built-in. One of them has a foam surround on the speaker and the one with the radio has a cloth surround and it sounds loads better.
I'm lucky with that, I got a pair of vintage WHD speakers with no sign of foam rot at all. They are like 30 years old and they sound absolutely awesome.
@nosek122487 thease speakers are getting thrown out, i would not even plug in speakers with a rotted foam... realistic is not high end enough for my ears

@nosek122487 These speakers are getting new woofers and sold off cheap on the local classifieds to get rid of them, I would never even plug in a speaker with such a defect that I planned on keeping around, Realistic is not high-end enough for my ears lol
We have some VERY vintage Pioneer speakers, there beautiful. Big bass driver, tweeter, mid range etc, topped off with a polished wooden case. Sadly, they rotted like this, but all the drivers were effected by 100%. They worked, but the cones would get stuck, and it would sound like crap. We are renovating them soon :)
Had this happen to my parent's Akai speakers which they had since the early 1980's. We were watching The Matrix and suddenly the bass started to sound like crap. Half the foam had torn away.
At the time (this was about 10 years ago) I didn't know refoam kits existed, so we replaced the woofers with a couple of 10" Pioneer woofers we bought for $20ea from a local electronics shop.
@poopooGarret I'd still refoam them, if their aligning that well with no surrounds at all it should be a simple as hell refoam job. I remember when rat shack used to sell those things too, they weren't bad, not fantastic but by no means crap. Refoam, hook to an amp with a turntable, get a nice vinyl copy of Rush 2112, place needle on outside of spinning record and turn up volume, enough said. ;)
is the foam just there to cover whatever is behind it. Looks like there is a metal supressor or something behind it to help guide the speaker out or something.
@VlogginLife lol the foam/rubber/cloth/whatever around the edge keeps the coil centred and safe from rubbing the coil on the magnet, without it the woofer cones flop and dont reproduce sound correctly, often without it the woofers lock up
i have some 1995 techniques 3 way floor speakers, these things have the 12" in them and they are really well built, great response, they sound so loud and the speaker barely moves
My mom just got rid of her system from '86, the speakers were definitely a bad case of foam rot. Some guy took it, and fter a day, he managed to blow away all the foam. He changed to some others, using the same amp. Do you think it's worth it to refoam those speakers? It was a pair of great JBL L80T GI's...
@SpeakerFreak95 Nope! replacement woofers and they hit the classified ads to get them out of my way, they had no sign of foam rot before i stored them
Just replace surround... Easy to do and cheap. Sound not change too much if you do it right.

@poopooGarret yeah I saw that after I posted this comment when you grabbed the cone and folded it back a bit.
