Edit....I see the switch, it was one of those extremely tiny switches....and the horrible video quality renders it invisible. Gotta love the Standard Definition days.....
I can play faster than this with my balls! You should see them both moving up and down the fretboard! In fact, I reckon I could play faster than this with one of my balls tied behind my back! Just wait until I post that vid on YouTube, man it's gonna kick so much ass that everyone elses balls are gonna explode!
I wonder who taught him when he was 9? A warped memory is one thing, but when a teacher tells you "only use upstrokes," that's just an odd technique to begin with. And only with one finger? Who the hell is this guy? I'm self-taught, and that's still odd.
@Ricoshr3d I think he only remembered what was emphasised - you must remember to use your pinky on you left hand and you must remember to play upstrokes. A lot of beginner students use three fingers on their left hand and neglect the pinky. Many play everything with downstrokes only.
There is also the possibility here that young Paul was only making a joke. He does that.
it's not about one picking technique it's about whatever works to achieve the sound, tone, and feel you're going for...the greatest picker is not even alive as all of this picking technique is still relatively new...in a hundred years there will be a picker that will leave everyone in the dust, and so on and so forth...the point is, we are just scratching the surface of what's even possible on guitar or anything for that matter...get out of that confined thinking and make something happen...
The one of the keys to alternative picking is consolidation of movement. The smaller the movement your picking hand makes, the faster you are going to be. Pay attention to Paul's picking hand. A good exercise to to just do one string exercises. So try to play the firsts string part fast. B-C-D over and over again. D-C-B over and over again ect
Economy picking may be necessary in some situations, but alternate is much easier to keep track of (and faster). I worked for a long time on both and think alternate is much less confusing, so I settled on that, apparently so did Paul. I wish I could do it as fast and clean as Paul, but then who can.
I don't understand why he would up stroke on the E at 5:05 wouldn't that be slower than just going down? Isn't contrary to "economy picking techniques?" I'm confused.
I have noticed a nice improvement in my speed since trying this regardless of what technique I use. Still not anywhere close to P Gilbert speed. It's ridiculous!!!
@dodo4hire its like if i did an alternate pick ending on a up on the high e then basically sweeped an up stroke on the b and then continued the lick on the b
@dodo4hire no, its instead of like doing a downstroke on the low e and an upstroke on the a to change strings, you just sweep pick kinda with like two strings and then continue alternate picking. economy is pretty much just two downstrokes or upstrokes
@DeadlyDictator well so. outside picking to alternate... well i chose what picking i do. fuck him for saying i should pick that way. even tough ill do it anyway cuz its the best way lol xD
@SirJamestheIII - Good comment and great advice. I agree, and discovered this (though I did not know it was what it was). Once I went back to simple pattern exercises, I was like.. whoa... how did that speed happen? Exactly.
@FRIDAY13TAURUS given that i asked Paul in person about this at a clinic at SUNY Purchase a year ago, I may be a moron, but I am a moron who is reciting what paul said, so..... STOP TROLLIN
@SirJamestheIII It's good to learn both inside and outside picking. If your strictly playing using alternate picking instead of economy picking, you'll always run into inside playing, aswell as outside playing.
@SirJamestheIII thats true i used to do only economy picking and completely forgot about outside picking, that just killed my technique, i had to start doing it again, but it was quite easy because i had already done it before

he does a lot of upstroke stuff to accent the notes
Kaosguitarist 2 years ago
he doesn't do economy picking. he does strictly outside picking. Why?
A. cuz he's badass
B. better dynamics
C. He's better at anyone in the world at it
practice doing outside picking. your alternate picking skills will be much better and cleaner than if you only use economy picking
