Everyone talks about all these different versions of the song but no one talks about the original, at least in my book, by Simone, which was used as the theme for the Brazilian telenovela "Malu Mulher".
I found one version on youtube, but lost track of where I found it :
Crossing paths
When a heart that is grown so tired of crying all alone, is come upon another heart that is tired of life alone, it is time to wonder if love, after so long, can at last be possible now.
When someone has loved someone once with all their heart, and that someone did not understand...
If one lets a new love starts to grow, how one can be sure,it wont come to the tears in the end...
Hey there. This song is called "The Island" (English translation). The lyrics in English are completely different. You will find different artists singing "The Island" on you tube.
freedomliberator, look for "The Island" by Patti Austin for the English version ;-) Mind you the Ivan Lins is no doubt THE best ever .. Patti does come close thou :-)
Eu acompanho o programa do Raul Gil há varios anos. Com certeza esta foi uma das interpretações mais espetaculares que passaram pelo programa. Isto é facilmente notado pela emoção do Ivan Lins. Thalita vc. é Show !!!
The best versions are Toots Thielemans, as well Jane Monheit's. There is no feeling in this woman's voice. Check out Jane's version. Absolutely haunting, with a great Tom Harrell solo at the end.
It's nice to hear a female version of this song (not Babs's whitewash!) but there's no passion like Lins' version!! His phrasing is perfectly wonderful for this song (well, he'd know; he wrote it after all - see the Record Plant version.)
Very nice. Appears the maestro enjoyed her performance. I still rate Ivan's version number one in the universe, followed by Sarah Vaughan's English version.

I am such a fool to try in vain to think it is true,
I know love will not be bound by anybody's rules.
Here we are, willing now to try,
to build up a new love,
and leave our sadness behind...

This is nicely done, but the best version I've heard is by Barbra Streisand. I have it on my channel if you are interested.
