I love the complexiity of this song with all the layers; want to hear another good artist? Check out Alia Christain in my top 3 and subscribe to her channel please!
If you break it down it's not complex at all, but it gives you that feel. The bass line is very simple. The drums are mostly just providing a rhythm, the guitar has a few more complex bits, but mostly is simplistic. The keyboard is actually just mimicking the sound of water. Then it has what sounds like a cowbell. And background vocals. But I'll tell lthat my body sure is dam well moving. I LOVE it!
i dont want to be "that guy" but mewithoutYou did a really cool cover of this song. If you feel so inclined i suggest you check it out. And this video is great...nothing cooler than the spastic dance moves...im suprised it didnt take over the world. everybody do the "seizure"
If I had to pick a favourite song from the Stop Making Sense DVD, this might be it. It's a toss up between this, Girlfriend Is Better and Psycho Killer. Fantastic concert DVD.
oh femtondeseptember, we are so sorry you didnt like the video. next time dont watch it and you'll feel much better. now go take your medication and take a nap.
Notice how Byrne's lyrics, delivery and gestures are much like those of an old-fashioned, stylized preacher - albeit a very amphetamine-drive one! He's almost like an epileptic that is really in tune with the rhythms.
His antics are just about epileptically perfect. The thing I'm wondering is why did they stop putting up "Making Flippy Floppy"? Amongst all the great tracks that came from this video that is truly my favorite.
Too bad the live version has a different bass line and drum beat. I really admired the recorded version for that...they took the easy way on this recording...check it out.
I think his movements are over-emphasizing what the song is about...an epiphany. Its like getting smacked in the head with reality..waking up to reality..."how did i get here..." my 2cents.

Dancing? Seizure? You'll know what he's doing if you're ever stressed out enough. There's The National Anthem and now there's this THE LIFETIME ANTHEM; so please rise and put your hands up, waving wildly.
closest thing you'll see was david's recent tour where he preformed songs from the Brian Eno albums (More About Buildings and Food, Remain In Light, and Fear of Music)
That was incredible! Truly epic! I loved this song the first time I heard it, but this performance rockets it to superhuman proportions! I don't think I am exaggerating here, this is great!
That is so f*cking awesome, THANKS. I'm 45 and was at this concert, dancing in audience with a gorgeous, sexy little sweater-wearing 1980s college library girlfriend. Now I'm in another part of the world, living in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife. Great song.
I was a teenager durring the 80's, literally, I turned 10 in 1980 and 20 in 1990. I never really appreciated The Talking Heads when I was a kid - now, as an adult, it is really superb and true.
I remember this song from when i was a kid watching the movie Down And Out In Beverly Hills...............So this song is heavily associated with that awesome flick 4 me........
So does anybody have the original MUSIC VIDEO for this song? Not from Stop Making Sense, like the corny 80's one. And Talking Heads were anything but racist, they had black people in their band, and they were strongly influenced by African music.
"Stop Making Sense" - the movie from which this is taken- is a cool one. Well worth seeing. David Byrne & the other Heads took quirkiness and weirdness to their highest musical form. Gotta love 'em.
Seriously? How is this song offensive? I really need to know. Oh yea, nobody, including Obama, will ever be able to do anything about racism. It's a part of life. As a black man, if you don't understand that fact by the time you reach middle school, you'll never get it....sorry. But I really need to know how you find this song racist.
You Dont really mean that - this is a track that /cant be bettered can it ? - as you say it does 'FUCKING RULE' - YOU do not want any of us to Die( I agree most of us are cunts) - If I have to die do you know what song I want at my 'Funeral' Talkinhg Heads' - " Heaven' - coz it means the exact opposite of what I was brought up to beleive in - and it would be great played very loud ! I

So you'd rather listen to a song talking about the death at the end of a pointless life? Is that not profane enough for you?
Obviously you just mean words we have given a bad idea to. Because that would be much worse than "letting the days go by, the water flowing over". Essentially saying all days blur into one, because life is so monotonous.
I'm not discounting talking heads. But people who don't believe in vulgarity or profane lyrics clearly are not in touch with the world.
OK, it says water flowing UNDER, as it does everywhere...fuck what you think of the Heads if you cannot get the drift of the lyrics.Rap is dead, hip-hop killed it and its too bad that posers have a voice and start believing they are gangstas. WHITEY PLEASE! stop interpreting lyrics!
Maybe that is just the irony of the song, saying you shouldn't let the days go by..I Don't Know, that's what I was thinking. Maybe why the song is so genius. And I don't listen to rap music or vulgar music and I am very in touch with the world.
Strictly speaking, this is a good song. But you cannot censor people just because you disagree with them. If they dont like the song, they have every right in the world to post a comment, just as those of us that like the song do.
