  • There is absolutely nothing weird about this vid.

  • got to love 70's chroma-key

  • first time I heard this song. catchy tune though ,,

  • Remember this from that intriguing New Wave compilation album that came out in England in 77. Nice to hear it again.

  • @keddw

I have two copies of that LP with slightly different tracklists....both are great.

The British one was my first copy...got it when it came out...the other is some kind of Malaysian import.....same cover, different label....I found it recently in a second-hand shop.

  • @dual506 How were the tracklists different, dual?

  • the worst facial expressions I've ever seen.. i love the 80s...

  • i came up with a theory that involves the book of genesis (fig leaves) buddha (sitting under the bodhi fig tree) jesus (many sayings about figs) ross horne's book (new health revolution) and science (figs are the most important source of food for fruit eating rainforest animals). i then experimented on the figs by eating mainly dried figs (same brand) for over 6 years now and found cycles which i related to the numbers in psgs 11/12 of the book of revelations. this theory has gone everywhere.

  • never heard of skyhooks? me neither red simons is a knob jockey from hell

  • First time I've heard of this song (group). It's great.

But maybe someone can upload another one but with news images.

You can update the news images every month.

There would be plenty to work with in this crazy world.

    Right?

  • @MrBlueSkyMrNight This is pretty much what you get here, get a cd (second hand stores), I have albums of this band and its a filth sound, don't need video clips, listen to the words LISTEN TO THIS AND I'LL TELL YOU SOMETHING

  • @MrBlueSkyMrNight Great hit in Australia when it was released.

  • go red.. rip shirl..

  • save your self the horror turn the tv off at 6.30 before and after andrew

  • Extremely Fantastic music!!!!! The Skyhooks Rock :) Have always loved them!!!!

    Now this was good music!!!!!!!

  • I was 12 when this album came out I had to save for ever to get it. still have it to this day on vinyl shame I have nothing to play it on thank god for youtube and nzoz1975

  • RIP shirl, are true australian gentleman

  • 1:39 best moment in any music video

  • Last I saw this I was babysitting for My neighbors kids who refused to go to sleep. So i threatened to play this for them if they didnt get some shut eye. They were fast asleep in seconds.

  • @acdeucee but its a good song D:

  • @acdeucee lol

  • Australian music was so far ahead of its time in the 70's... this still sounds edgy even in 2011. Anyone who grew up in Oz or NZ in the 70's and 80's knows. Wonderful wonderful music. Bless your soul Shirley.

  • This tune keeps comin up reminding me of the good days

  • skyhooks wear the stuff they do because they had a rule of no denim on stage. so as time went by the stage get ups become more outlandish. red (the guitarist) wins

  • If you like Skyhooks, it's worthwhile checking out Electric Six. And not just 'gay bar' and 'high voltage'. They have a lot of great songs to offer, very similar humour to Skyhooks.

  • THIS SONG IS AWSOME HORROR MOVIE SHOCKING ME RIGHT OUT OF MY BRAIN

  • its a pity there isnt any one today with the presence or excitement of these guys

  • Go Shirley..you good thing.xx

  • Biggest acid trippers hahah

  • My mother told me that if I didn't have anything nice to say....... you know the rest. Well, that's okay if you are an azzlicking sheep. The reality is they were good people, the music was ok, but they're really second class. Sherbet at the Drummoyne RSL made me leave the RSL that night. I worked at the Stagedoor Tavern,Sydney Cove Tavern....clubs. There are many incredible Ozzie musicians. Skyhooks were like trying to make a surf board in your garage in the 70's, it didn't go very well. REALITY

  • this.is.impeccable

  • Anybody else with they grew up in the 70s? Ah well, at least I had 90s grunge ...

  • Me: I need to report a crime

    Police: what!

    Me: rape

    Police: on who?

    me: THE FUCKING REPLAY BUTTON!!!

  • Shirl. Lost but never forgotten!

  • reds a fag

  • i love this song ,skyhooks is glam rock,

  • @luigi7630 borderline psychedalic rock imo

  • @aza4444 hello ,thanks ,great band, great singer ,great song, marvellous video

  • the chick at 2:55 must have been one of the people that thumbs down this AWESOME song :D...

  • the chich at 2:55 must be one of the people thumbs down this AWESOME song...

  • I don't know about any one else, but if the a horror movie ever starring the scene from 1:15 to 1:30, I'd probably be gone in about 3 seconds. Just saying.

  • cannot believe that I work with Shirley Strachan uncle Robbo at the laundrey

  • i love this song cause it tells u about all the stuff people do and all the things we need to fix.

  • i love this song cause it tells u about all the stuff people do and all the things we need to fix.

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwssssssssssssssssssoooooooooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee in my brain

  • Luna park melbourne, and countdown those were the day's..

  • They were a great band and much bigger then ACDC or Split Enz were at the time. Pity they never made it overseas.

  • man i swear shirl looks like will farrel wen he lookin in the mirroe

  • man i swear SHIRL looks loke will farrel wen he lookin in the mirror

  • Hahah can't believe I was born 17 years after this! ...70's - 80's - 90's rock for life!

  • Think of the era this came out of, most of the bands worked the pubs to try to make a name and get "discovered" and most had to pay to get a record done to try to get them on radio, bugger all was spent on film clips. Countdown was about the only place to get it shown on TV ( no computers then, no U-tube), Check out one of AC/DC's early songs "long way to the top" clip was filmed on the back of a truck, look at early Tv , film sets, not to flash, and about 1 in 4 houses had a stereo

  • "The fires are a-lightin'..." The clip was partially shot at Luna Park, wasn't it?

Would have been ironic if it was in Sydney's Luna Park.

  • Shirley's jumpsuit belongs in the Powerhouse Museum! Love this clip but what's up with the bored Countdown teens??

  • 3:33 great great special effects. at 1975 it was sth really good. great video, brillant track. 10/10 ! :]

  • horror movie

  • omg pause at 00:56 it looks really weird

  • Wow, these great quality vids are a real buzz to watch now that the '70's are so far away now ... This clip comes from the time just before I discovered them and it could be early '75?. The makeup and costumes are what attracted me to them and to be honest the first time I heard the "livin' in the '70's" single I thought that the lead singer was a female ... I still have all my scrapbooks and the 'Hooks mirror I bought from the fan club ...RIP Shirl, Mark Hunter, Steve Gilpin & Harvey James

  • Shirl was hot!

  • Never heard of these guys until just now...not to bad. They definitely have an 80's heavy metal sound. Remind me of early Iron Maiden.

  • I was 14 when I 1st saw this BRILLIANT clip on COUNTDOWN@my neighbour's house IN Townsville,Nth Qld.I was already AWESTRUCK@watching TV in COLOUR & this clip was amazing - so "out-there".I was already "in love" with Ted Mulry after seeing TMG perform JUMP IN MY CAR on TV.They were gr8 times2be growing up really. My dad was VERY strict & "religious". I wasn't ALLOWED2watch shows like Countdown or2listen2the radio (I used2hide it under my pillow & listen2 Top 40 stuff etc!) Aaahh - Memories! :-)

  • mfw dat squat

  • R.I.P Shirl Not many classy guys like him anymore. I can't get over how people I know misunderstand the song. They stupidly think they were singing about horror films but as any self respecting hooks fan knew and still knows it was a song about the media and how things were so out of control with murders and crime that watching the 6:30 news was like watching a horror movie as it was always grim news.

  • am 12 bron in 1998 but think i was ment to be bron in the 60s 70s

  • R.I.P Shirl

  • @ljharry75

Here here. He was such a nice guy. And Skyhooks was one very talented and very creative band. It's only as the years have gone by that I have come to appreciate this band and the incredible writing skills of Greg Mcainsh.

Funny though...the audience at this Countdown gig looks a bit dead. Watch the girl at the front with her arms crossed. She looks like she just had an argument with her boyfriend or something.

  • I got harder all these years later watching this then the crowd did way back then...........long live SHIRL...RIP

  • Oh god I was at Luna Park on the weekend and some of it has not changed since this video was shot. Great song.

  • Good stuff diggers,we lived in Melbourne back then,i was nine and this was thrashed to death by the old lady in the living room at parties.

  • 0:59 makes me lol for some reason

  • We know so much more about the effects of trauma on children today and have censorship. Getting home from school and seeing the evening news in the 70's was a horror movie. We practically saw the body counts and burning napalm children live from the Vietnam war. Skyhooks nailed the times, the spirit and the anguish of Whitlams sacking. They had artistic vision and the satire and wit to pull it off. Thats the problem with subltlety- the dumber and more ignorant you are the harder it is to get it

  • I remember this being on high rotation on 3XY, the only station for young people at that time (no FM at all). That meant it was played almost every hour - or so it seemed. My friend and I were in the workshop making a bunk bed for our action man figures :) and we heard it at least 3 or 4 times in an afternoon. We thought the lyrics were "horror movie ma terror ma tv". A completely different era to the media saturated one of today. One radio station!

  • I remember hearing this literally 4 times as many hours on 3XY. My friend and I couldnt understand the lyrics and thought it was "horror movie ma terror ma tv"

  • LOVE THIS SONG

  • Didn't even know it was an Aussie band. When I was 5, which was 10 years ago I was listening to this song oever and over, and doing air guitar to the solo :D

  • Is it wrong if the video for this has me making cooing noises? Horror movie! It's scary like! I mean, just 1:39 - 1:45. Hahaha.

  • So insanely catchy.

  • This is absolutely awesome! Skyhooks should be more popular!

  • Awesomely talented band...up there with AC/DC in terms of how they rock out.

  • @danielmy08 totally dude! the highway to hell album and guilty till proven insane album were out at roughly the same time both albums were killer no filler!

  • LOVE IT !!...loved the clothes and everything...bands these days too plain and boring...bring back the sexy glam and frivolity and eccentricity of the 70's and 80's...ie Bowie, Freddie, Elton etc...newcomer Adam Lambert is sensational if you like glamour.

  • back then cross dressing was cool. cos rockers did it but now

  • Brilliant!! Definitely one the better 70s glam rock bands.

  • ***** Oi You see! who was the original band to do the dress ups on stage? AUSSIE BANDS!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is 35 years old??????? Cant be

  • These guys were WAY ahead of their time, with this song (at least)!

... the rest of their stuff didn't 'cut' it. : )

  • @ikky259 what do you mean the rest of their stuff didnt cut it? Australia had 6 million people, had only just got out of vietnam. GO CHECK OUT THEIR MASSIVE BODY OF WORK. " What ever happened to the revolution? they all got stonned and drifted away" POLEMIC SOCIAL COMMENTARY criticising the hippy movement that wanted a revolution .... but wanted someone else to do the heavy lifting and make the sacrifices. These guys were artists and poets capable of incisive, uncomfortable cultural reflection.

  • well man, I'm 22 and I haven't heard a thing bout this band, but they had a nice concept

  • how can I find an interview with that drummer. The one with the Roman helmet on. He looks like a very interesting person and I'd like to know more about him.

  • @paperchainsaws i have an interview with him, but I wont put it up on youtube...

He joined the Sports in 1981.

  • @nzoz1975 .. from memory it's Freddy Straucks? isn't it?? Could be mistaking him for Bongo but that seems too obvious.. either way the band members were Shirley Straughan, Red Simmons, Freddy Strauchs? Greg Macanish? and Bongo ... forgive the spelling of surnames .. it was such a long time ago.. And well done NZOZ ... love all these great Aussie clips by the legends of Oz Rock .. keep it up .. Do you have "The Dugites" song "Waiting"?? I think they originally hailed from W.A

  • @nzoz1975 so full of shit...u so dont. loser!

  • @MrDragons4life You idiot... I was talking about an inteview on DVD, not conducted by myself ... fool!

  • @paperchainsaws His name is Freddie Strauks and he lives in Melbourne Australia. He used the name Freddie Kaboodleschnitzer on the EGO album. The helmut is a mock-up WW1 German type.

  • @paperchainsaws His name is Freddy Strawks (from memory). Google skyhooks fan page.

I thought it was a prussian army helmet though?

  • The 6.30 news IS a horror movie.

  • This flim clip was played by the ABC just after midnight on March 3 1975 when it changed over from black and white to colour television.I didnt see it in colour that night but I sat up and watched it.I think they had monty python on afterwards and hours of tennis. My dad bought a colour television in April 1975 and it lasted until the late 1990s.

  • Settle down you lot. Old band, good band (in their day), one of my favourites, but certainly no need for this agro.....

  • ....and I'm noticing similiar outfits make an appearance in todays Kpop. Ahahha! :D

  • @MrWJFraser

you can't tell that its really bothering me. I've given you the response that you deserved - a response I give other self-loathing-pompus trolls - and as far as I am concerned, I am satisfied with the out come. Your 'suck' response works to a tee, because its made you appear childish and has made me look like the bigger dog. Too many 'LMAO's' have appeared in your comments, which indicates that you are not good at giving sharp responses. Plus, I am not a fan of Skyhooks.

  • @RHYSTREVITHICK

The thing that most annoys me about people (and I will avoid isolating MrWJFraser) is that whenever something good comes along (so be it, YouTube), they tend to not only piss in their own garden, but in others... it's like the booters in chatrooms, the trolls on YouTube, the ignorant being ignorant instead of being just that little more enlightened, etc, etc...

I will fight these trolls - put them in their place - and make them feel uncomfortable. It is what's required.

  • Comment removed

  • @nzoz1975 All good & well fighting these trolls from behind your keyboard & screen, maybe you all should hook up face to face! Until then your uncomfortable vibes you wanna share are all shit. People like you are the reason other people like doing home invasions, to test how tough you really are.

  • @nzoz1975 they seek attention, fighting fuels them just ignore and mark crappy comments with spam. Peace

  • @nzoz1975 u mad bro? dun b mad bro.

  • @nzoz1975 why you so mad bro?

  • srsly dun b mad.

  • @RHYSTREVITHICK I have no idea or care about this argument but how and when did skyhooks help ac/dc write anything? The bands had nothing even to do with each other.

  • @MrWJFraser

Why don't you keep your, rude, arrogant, selfish and obnoxious opinions to yourself! Why do you have to post negative comments. Your just a overomensating bully. PISS OFF PLEASE!!!

  • LOL,,,I've been told! ha ha

  • @MrWJFraser

And so you fucking well should be! If it isn't your interest nor territory than get the fuck out and leave those who like it to like it. It just makes you troll, especially when you lay out such an ignorant comment about AC/DC being the one Aussie band that is good. If you don't know the subject, fuck off and don't comment. You haven't heard enough of what we have to comment. I am not saying this on the grounds of being biased. I just think that it's pig-headed and ignorant.

  • @nzoz1975 I totally agree with you man some people just don't understand the quility of this band i mean this music sounds so good and the fact that many other bands wordwide COPIED the costume on stage idea from this band make them even more quility!

  • @nzoz1975

Yo really have to carry on... Seriously there are young people on here. Though I agree, just keep it clean. Make you look silly. Skyhooks Rock.

  • Dear god, the lead singer could so easily be mistaken for a girl. Seeing this film clip has degraded my appreciation for Skyhooks.

Horrible filmclip. Good song. Queer Singer.

  • Dear god, the lead singer could so easily be mistaken for a girl. Seeing this film clip has degraded my appreciation for Skyhooks.

Horrible filmclip. Good song. Queer Singer.

  • Classic aussie rock!!! Thanks nzoz1975 for your efforts.

  • Shithouse, embarassed to be Australian. Split Enz killed this guys. Fortunately Red Simons moved onto better things as the bastard judge of a 10 minute "talent quest" novelty segment of Hey Hey it's Saturday

  • Comment removed

  • i loved this band

  • B grade... Ashamed to be aussie.

  • @noosaslayer

over a mild piece of entertainment? you must be one precious little puppy.

  • @noosaslayer why be ashamed?? This is quility musica not like the shit from across the NORTH PACIFIC. you should know Just how popular this band was?

  • Well, at least one good band came outta Oz,,,,,ac/dc! This band sucks.

  • @MrWJFraser

The Angels, Midnight Oil, Rado Birdman, The Saints, The Birthday Party, The Go-Betweeens, The Triffids, Rose Tattoo, You Am I, Wolfmother, Powderfinger, Divinyls, Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs, Easybeats, The Loved ones, Cold Chisel... don't be a Canadian smart arse.

  • @MrWJFraser lol, u suck

  • Pretty gay, the Village People must have stolen their act!

  • I went from the UK to stay in Australia for 4 months and one of the first things I noticed was how great the music was down under, this was one of the songs that opened my eyes!

  • Comment removed

  • @Ludicusone no worries... i'm glad you've enjoyed it after 35 years.

  • OMG!!!There pass a century from the last time I dance this masterpiece!!I was 5 or 6 years old!!thank you whoever you are for this dive in my past!!:-*****

  • It was a sad day when shirley crashed his helicopter... RIP Shirley

  • weirdest music video, but really cool song. Im gonna see if i can get our music class to perform it :)

  • My daughter has just turned 5 and she walks around singing this song all the time! The choir did it at Mundijong Primary School.

  • we do this song at skool ;)
