I love this version of the song, don't know the singer who played Nicely but he was brilliant. The only one I can compare him with is Walter Bobbie in the Nathan Lane revival of Guys and Dolls.
wouldn't it be great if you could just randomly get up and start dancing and singing. i.e. gosh this class is boring. music starts, and we all get up and do our jazz hands. *dramatic singing* if you haven't noticed, life will never show this. so why do sit here and yawn? when we could be elsewhere, doing our own thing, and party till dusk is dawn....
15 people were dragged down by the sharp lapels of their checkered coats, the fancy ties round their wicked throats, and then found that they had a soul so heavy they'd never float...those poor people...
@MegaMRSR ... perhaps you're right about the people that disliked this.. however, I think it's more they're just too stupid to know a good show from a bad one!
@MrLolumad1234 Are you crazy? This is not a terrible version. This is THE version. It is the standard which all others are compared to. Stubby Kay has this nailed down and he knew it himself.Watch the smile and head nod at 40 seconds. This movie and all it's parts are instantly recognizable masterpieces. You should be barred from the theater. I just threw an extra large box of popcorn at you for booing Stubby Kay.
in my schools version harry the horse does this song and the guy who sings this AMAZING!!! his energy and laugh and voice makes it the best part of the play!
I wish I could just interpret these pieces on the piano bad sadly I always have to stop and check. You know like really get lost in the music without having to think too hard.
My school did this so well... I think they did it even better honestly. The guy playing Nicely was amazingly talented and because he was onstage he projected his voice a lot more.
@usmctanks1 He played Nicely in the original 1950 Broadway production but did not win a Tony Award. However, Robert Alda, Alan Alda's father, did win a Tony Award for best actor in a musical in 1951.
2:12 video: In 1955 film Guys and Dolls, Stubby Kaye as Nicely-Nicely Johnson sings "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat;" music and lyrics by Frank Loesser (June 29, 1910 – July 28, 1969).
I think my favorite part is after the song's over, and he quietly grabs his hat and sits down. Makes the entire song seem like a religious experience, instead of just another song.
Guys and Dolls is the quintissential Broadway musical. Its brilliance is a monument to American culture. Though (from what I understand) this film was panned by critics, the actual musical play is what defined Broadway's golden age.
It is my considered opinion that if there were just one musical that a person were to study in order to understand American musical theatre for all time, it could only be Guys and Dolls.
@poketprincess He's Stubby Kaye. I saw this film on TV a few weeks ago, and was amazed to see a very young Jerry Orbbach (Det. Lenny Briscoe) in an early scene, at a barber shop, where the customers get up and sing the song about "Good Ole Reliable Nathan." What a great show!
@weightfeather1 Thanks for the reply. You may be looking at someone different from the person I meant. I'm not talking about the guy with the receding hairline, I mean the guy with the brown hair and the dark-red shirt, two chairs to the right of Sinatra. He's at the right of the screen at, say, 0:43. IMdB shows him in "G&D," as well as in "Marty," both in 1955 and both NY-centric. So he must have been available for Noo-Yawk style roles -- maybe even auditioned in NY. I still do think it's he.
@JoeJlovr junior. he's not bad. he has some trouble holding some of the higher notes but he's getting there. the director wouldn't have picked him if he couldn't do it. i myself am playing arvide abernathy
Great chorus because this song is vocally demanding...however, there needs to be more action...we just got through doing a professional run of this in Ontario, Canada and we had quite a lot more animation than this...although our Nicely Nicely was a skinny bean pole and not a fat water buffalo as what Big Jule suggests haha
My high school is doing this, I got cast as Nicely Nicely, and my two best friends are Nathan Detroit and Benny Southstreet. This show is going to be amazing. I can't wait to sing this song :D
