  • Stubby Kay's energy and enthusiasm will always be remembered. He was great. RIP.

  • i done this at school

  • 16 people didn't sit down.

  • I love this version of the song, don't know the singer who played Nicely but he was brilliant. The only one I can compare him with is Walter Bobbie in the Nathan Lane revival of Guys and Dolls.

  • Way cool! Jimmy Simoneti nailed it Yonkers LHS 1975 production!

  • I cant wait to do this musicallll:)

  • Sadly, I didn't get this part last year... But this year i used it as an audition piece, and now i am the wolf in "Into the woods, JR"!

  • I really wanted to do this part, and the director said I was amazing. But, I am a girl and she said it wouldnt work.

  • @Loupstar10 ahahahaha this made me laugh. Should have filed a claim for sexism.

  • i got this part on friday

  • I'm Nicely Nicely in our High Schools Musical this year, I am so pumped to be having to do this song :D

  • jouw,wereld,die,je,geeft,is,elke,dag,verassend,het,is,mooi,wat,jy,my,geeft,dank,je

  • I got Nice Nicely in our High School Musical, and I'm super pumped to do it!

  • 16 people rocked the boat and fell out!

  • Walter Bobbie's performance in the 1992 revival cast is THE one to beat. He absolutely nailed the song.

  • Im excited my schools doing this!! What part should i go for if i dont like a lead part?!

  • Shoot, I have to sing this... I'm playing Nicely in G&D's... oh and did I mention I'm a 14 year old girl? Any tips?

  • @skala9801 hey youl have an easier time singing this then i will. Im a baritone but they decided to put me on a rediculously skilled tenors part.

  • @skala9801 it doesnt matter I love seeing roles reversed like that study stubby thats all the tips you need but put your own spin on it too enjoy!!

  • wouldn't it be great if you could just randomly get up and start dancing and singing. i.e. gosh this class is boring. music starts, and we all get up and do our jazz hands. *dramatic singing* if you haven't noticed, life will never show this. so why do sit here and yawn? when we could be elsewhere, doing our own thing, and party till dusk is dawn....

  • Love love love love love this scene. I'm watching it right now on DVD.

  • i bring my dice everywhere......litteraly

  • Fantastic peformance by a true showman! We are truly lucky to have access to such great moments in film history.

  • 15 people were dragged down by the sharp lapels of their checkered coats, the fancy ties round their wicked throats, and then found that they had a soul so heavy they'd never float...those poor people...

  • @MegaMRSR ... perhaps you're right about the people that disliked this.. however, I think it's more they're just too stupid to know a good show from a bad one!

  • @MrLolumad1234 Are you crazy? This is not a terrible version. This is THE version. It is the standard which all others are compared to. Stubby Kay has this nailed down and he knew it himself.Watch the smile and head nod at 40 seconds. This movie and all it's parts are instantly recognizable masterpieces. You should be barred from the theater. I just threw an extra large box of popcorn at you for booing Stubby Kay.

  • @joeytwosubs Um... he's obviously trolling. Everyone knows this is the best version.

  • im a freshman in high school and i still love frank sinatra and bing crosby and all that jazz. i love this music

  • I love him.

  • in my schools version harry the horse does this song and the guy who sings this AMAZING!!! his energy and laugh and voice makes it the best part of the play!

  • i have just found out that i am going to be nicely-nicely in my schools musical...god, you have graced me with the most golden song ever

  • we're doing this song in Encore (music drama group)......too funny!! XD

  • Probably one of the top 4 numbers in movie musical history. Well done, Stubby!

  • me and my school are doing this in april. i'm in the hot box chorus

  • Epic WTF face at the end there. :D

  • I played Nicely Nicely in my drama gorups presentation of Guys And Dolls. I was so much fun, im gonna miss it :(

  • I wish I could just interpret these pieces on the piano bad sadly I always have to stop and check. You know like really get lost in the music without having to think too hard.

  • yeah nicely nicely!

  • This makes me want to swing dance alittle bit =)

  • My school did this so well... I think they did it even better honestly. The guy playing Nicely was amazingly talented and because he was onstage he projected his voice a lot more.

  • The great Stubby Kaye.

  • Haha it looks like ALMOST every person in there either has a red tie or shirt, or some type of red lol =)

  • y do people thumb down vids..i mean y r u watching it if u dont like

  • OMG FRANK SINATRA!!!

  • Brings back memories of sixth grade when I had Mrs. Note as a teacher. She made us put on this play

  • @OrangeWolf6 it's a musical. not a play

  • @TDHVide0s Congradulations. Would you like a cookie?

  • @OrangeWolf6 please! =D

  • @darkjak144 you disgust me , go die in a hole

  • i love dis song we sing and dancing to this in our stage school :) x

  • Tabbywiggiy it means not to do iliegil things or something bad will have ( and the devil will drag u under)

  • Brilliant use of pauses, the contrasts throughout are as good as it gets

  • What does the song attually mean? what do the lyrics mean?

  • @TabbyanWabbie Just Google ' Guys and Dolls Story Line' and you'll get the whole story.

  • I think Stubby won a tony in 1952 (?) for his roll in the play, not sure

  • @usmctanks1 He played Nicely in the original 1950 Broadway production but did not win a Tony Award. However, Robert Alda, Alan Alda's father, did win a Tony Award for best actor in a musical in 1951.

  • @usmctanks1 If he did he earned it.

  • i fell in love with stubby kaye ..when he played ..weismuller in doctor who...take note big finish ..the adventures of weismuller and hawk.!

  • 13 people don't like this.

  • 13 people didn't bring their dice along

  • Stubby Kaye = greatest man who ever lived

  • 2:12 video: In 1955 film Guys and Dolls, Stubby Kaye as Nicely-Nicely Johnson sings "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat;" music and lyrics by Frank Loesser (June 29, 1910 – July 28, 1969).

  • i am nicely this year and i disagree with 13 folks

  • what movie is this

  • @joziakka The movie is called Guys and Dolls

  • @kacplaymyst thanks

  • @joziakka You are welcome ;-) the movie is worth watching.

  • @kacplaymyst i ll download it singin in the rain is also a great musical

  • I love Nicely. He seems so gentle and kind.

  • Nicely is his nick name. If you ever get the chance to see the show, it's great!

  • I think my favorite part is after the song's over, and he quietly grabs his hat and sits down. Makes the entire song seem like a religious experience, instead of just another song.

  • Nicely Nicely?

  • Why are both top comments the same?

  • Our school picked this as this years annual show!!! We have just over a week untill we show it!!! Im so excited!!!

  • My PA group just did this show!!!

  • FRANK SINATRAAAAAAAA

  • Guys and Dolls is the quintissential Broadway musical. Its brilliance is a monument to American culture. Though (from what I understand) this film was panned by critics, the actual musical play is what defined Broadway's golden age.

It is my considered opinion that if there were just one musical that a person were to study in order to understand American musical theatre for all time, it could only be Guys and Dolls.

  • OMG! it looks like luke´s dinner from gilmore girls!

  • Potato

  • 13 people are rocking the boat.

  • One of the best songs and scenes (or play's) to ever hit Broadway. Simply brilliant. No one has ever been able to approach Kaye since. Period.

  • 13 people are rocking the boats!

  • Stubby Kaye

  • Does anyone know the name of the great guy who plays Nicely Nicely Johnson???

  • @poketprincess He's Stubby Kaye. I saw this film on TV a few weeks ago, and was amazed to see a very young Jerry Orbbach (Det. Lenny Briscoe) in an early scene, at a barber shop, where the customers get up and sing the song about "Good Ole Reliable Nathan." What a great show!

  • My mind has been messed with in the best way possible with this song.

  • Nicely looks like he'd rock the boat just by moving from side to side, haha, he has some voice though, love this movie

  • 13 people have hemorrhoids.

  • Just Brilliant. See also Pfizerpfonics Choir Cork on Youtube, who give a great performance of Sit Down also.

  • i love the awkward silence when the song is over hahaha

  • I've never seen this movie but I saw the play. It was great.

  • @weightfeather1 Thanks for the reply. You may be looking at someone different from the person I meant. I'm not talking about the guy with the receding hairline, I mean the guy with the brown hair and the dark-red shirt, two chairs to the right of Sinatra. He's at the right of the screen at, say, 0:43. IMdB shows him in "G&D," as well as in "Marty," both in 1955 and both NY-centric. So he must have been available for Noo-Yawk style roles -- maybe even auditioned in NY. I still do think it's he.

  • guys now it'S 13 people rocking the boat:P

  • good stuff!!

  • 13 people got washed overboard.

  • The 2 most liked coment are EXCACTLY the same.

  • my favorite movie love how u gave it that old feeling

  • 12 people aren't so nicely nicley

  • wow they never make films like that these days.

  • HERMAN!

  • my school did this musical for the past 3 days. i saw it yesterday, it was pretty good.

  • @animekitten789 same here my schools was amazing and this is one of my fav songs from it

  • I was Nicely in our school's musical as a bass, but this was literally the funnest song to sing in my opinion:)

  • my school is doing this musical right now. i hope we can do this film justice

  • @EKhammer323 who's the lucky guy who gets to song this song in ur musical?

  • @JoeJlovr junior. he's not bad. he has some trouble holding some of the higher notes but he's getting there. the director wouldn't have picked him if he couldn't do it. i myself am playing arvide abernathy

  • @EKhammer323 cool i only play a crap shooter and a doll but what really sux is i am only a doll in maybe 3 scenes

  • I love this version!

  • I saw this musical last night with my choir! It was amazing, I had so much fun!

  • i just got the part of nicely-nicely at my highschool and im sooo excited for this songg (=

  • 12 people rocked the boat and drowned..

  • 12 people won't be riding that boat to Heaven

  • Stubby's the man. As a Nicely-Nicely myself, I sang and ate food on stage for this man. Rest in peace, Stubby. Hope I'm making you proud.

  • Stubby was the best!

  • 12 f***** up the whole song and resisted whiskey.

  • O my school is doing this play and my friend plays nicely, nicely his version is incredible. Its so much more epic than this version

  • @TheBulldozer32 my school is doing this play as well. our nicely is a girl character however

  • @HHSHighlights whatttt... aha

  • This is MY FAVORITE version. Beautifully done by everyone.

  • Great chorus because this song is vocally demanding...however, there needs to be more action...we just got through doing a professional run of this in Ontario, Canada and we had quite a lot more animation than this...although our Nicely Nicely was a skinny bean pole and not a fat water buffalo as what Big Jule suggests haha

  • 12 people were pulled down by the devil, drowned and never woke up.

  • Maybe you should give STUBBY KAYE his props...he played "Nicely Nicely"

  • our nicely is so funny! it is amazing! im in the mission band. i carry the sign :)

  • Hi my name is nicley.

    HI nicely

  • My high school is doing this, I got cast as Nicely Nicely, and my two best friends are Nathan Detroit and Benny Southstreet. This show is going to be amazing. I can't wait to sing this song :D

  • This is the best song of the whole show/movie

  • its a very hard song to sing but he makes it look easy

it just makes you want to laugh as well

  • i go to a school of the arts and were doing guys and dolls and im nicely in the play

  • @youdonthateonme that's great! my school is doing guys and dolls and in my opinion nicely is one of (if not the) best characters

  • 12 people are rocking the boat.

  • were are doing this play at my jr. high and when i heard it was guys and dolls i looked it up. nobody else did they only know a few names, so while im going for Nathan. a guy with a ton of lines and a fancy duet with aldalide everyone else wants a fat guy who sings one song that doesent make much sense,

most of them are girls too...... FAIL

  • im him in the play

  • Do you think Nicely-Nicely Johnson could be played by a female?

  • @iGabalot im him in the play and im a girl so yes :D

  • This song has been stuck in not only my head but my intire schools head.

  • I got this in my musical:D

weird thing is I'm a bass so we have to change all my numbers

  • such a good song....

  • 12 people are rockin' the boat.

  • We have auditions coming up for this show!! I'm hoping to get Sky :]

  • @ThePrince593 At my auditions I'm hoping for Sarah. Break a leg!

  • @THDgals My school just did this production last week! It was great and fun!

  • @DarkAmbellina Good luck. I played nicely in my production aswell. Have fun =)

  • Great!

We just did Guys and Dolls for our school musical, and our version of this song was slower and a lot more intense. I think it can work either way.

  • Love this song

  • I'm playing Nicely in my school's production of this!!

  • I think of glee singing this

  • They redid this show in an all-black version on Broadway in the 1970's. I went to that version and it rocked! Great movie - great Broadway play - great stuff!

  • musically, this sounds awesome, but the director didn't have as much fun as he could've with this number. it should be more intense.

  • The wonderful Stubby Kaye who was the male voice of Broadway in the 40's, 50's and 60's, just as Ethel Merman was its female voice. Both of them were powerhouse performers and absolute geniuses when it came to selling a number. How the songwriters must have cheered when they heard that either Stubby or Ethel had been hired to immortalise their words and music. They truly don't make 'em like this any more.

  • I love this 11'oclock number :)

  • our class did this play, and our nicely nicely Johnson wasso awesome, possibly better than this one.

  • That last chord gives me goosebumps every time...

  • Comment removed

  • ..i wonder how many people searched this up after watching the pilot episode of Glee?..

  • My best friend sang this song. :)

  • I love how the two guys at the end are just staring like, "What the hek just happened?"

  • The show choir at my school is doing this. Its awesome.

  • I wish real life was like this...

  • i think he wants us to stand up on the boat.

  • Although I think this song is very good, the overall arrangement is incredible

  • playing this character in my school play woop woop !!!

  • THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THIS VIDEO!!!!! THERE ARE MORE THAN ZERO DISLIKES!!!!!

  • love how youtube tagged an ad for urology supplies with this video; clearly im too young to be watching this

  • LOVE THIS FREAKIN MOVIE!!!!
