In most productions of Don Giovanni I've seen, the Don is portrayed as nearly completely emotionless. Whether he's shown to be a devilish psychopath or a bored playboy, the death of the Commendatore doesn't seem to shake him at all and his return in the end leaves him firm. Keenlyside's take on the Don is quite different and much more believable - his Don is visibly moved by the Commendatore's death, but shakes the emotion off as if it was something unworthy of him. Never seen this done better.
@Baritanist Tenors??? Terfel is a bass-baritone. I don't think that a microphone makes the difference...with or without, Terfel is a big singer, with a really wonderful voice, very rare, and is a fantastic actor too. Is very expressive, he speaks with his eyes and enchants with his voice. I can't wish more from a opera singer. Love him so much!
This whole opening scene is actually my favorite musical number of the opera. The subsequent introduction of each of the 4 characters demonstrates the genius of both Da Ponte & Mozart. The whole thing is really epic if you think about it. Sort of encapsulates the entire opera. And there are many little musical moments in this intro that I literally listen to over and over on a daily basis.
what a luxurious cast, and what an awesome trio starting at 4:20 - the perfect atmosphere, the right interpretation of the quotation form the Requiem "flammis acribus addictis" (with another text here) wow!
I think I have fallen in love with Keenlyside. He's my perfect Don. And Terfel is a perfect Leporello - I don't like when he sings the Don. It's not his type.
And Matti Salminen... oh, God, I love that man since I've heard my first Götter recording.
the music is good but the set isn't. what are the chairs doing. Secondly, leporello should be hiding throughout, not coming towards don giovanni while he struggles with donna anna.
Well, musically, it's a beautiful trio, but beyond that, it shows how tragic, personal, and intimate this murder is. Don Giovanni surprises himself. Remorse and self-doubt begin immediately. He has connected himself to the commendatore by killing him, and flees from this baring of his own corrupt soul for the rest of the opera.
This treatment of violence is miles above any contemporary movie. Much more eerie. Much more homoerotic. And very sad.
I guess I meant why 3:23 in particular. To me, about 4:20 to the end is the most evocative music, as far as the exposure of Don G's soul, and of his emotional state.
Some great singing and acting from Tyrfel in particular but all in all I notice a distinct lack of energy in this performance, which surprises me. I saw the BU Opera Institute do this a couple years back and it was much more well-paced and dynamic all around.
I love how he looks in comparison to Salminen; one sees perfectly that Don Giovanni MUST have used some dirty trick in order to bring his opponent down; after all, the Commendatore, as a knight commander of a Spanish military order had had at least eight years of service in the army (in the rank of an officer) after him!
what a pitty there's no DVD! I would like to see the whole production! You see that Terfel really thought through his part. What an evil frustrated Leporello! And one with an own charakter. Much more interesting like this! My favourite Leporello is still Laszlo Polgar (with his big funny innocent eyes), but this one is really interesting!
I'm more used to Terfel as Don Giovanni as well, but I must admit he's not bad as Leporello (though without the comic streak of Corena or the distinction of Van Dam).
@Gabba02 Yes, it does. On DG - Don Giovanni / Keenlyside, Salminen, Remigio, Heilmann, Terfel, Isokoski, D'Arcangelo, Pace, Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Abbado. One of THE BEST!

This makes, however, a beautiful contrast between him and the Commendatore Salminen... I`ve always believed Don Giovanni must have used some dirty trick to bring him down...
I also like Hampson, and his stage prescence, have you seen/are you referring to his recent DVD where he plays teh Don? I have heard mixed reviews, and wonder what you think of Hampson in it?
if you mean the salzburg don giovanni dvd of 2006, thats what i was referring to, yes. I for my part like the interpretation of the libretto very much (something interestingly new and unconventional). Hampson does a great job not only acting-wise, especially in the second finale. And he really had the right amount of stage presence and self-confidence to fill the huge stage, something the other singers seemed to lack a little.
Havent seen all of it yet, just bits on utube...I know the M22 salzburg us usually pretty liberal with interpretations, so I didn't rush out to buy this one...but big Hampson fan, so i think I will have to get it sooner or later. Glad to hear you liked it, I'll let you know what I think when i do see it!
I highly doubt there is a role that Terfel cannot do. The only problem with him playing Leporello is that you can't possibly find someone suitable to cast over him. If only there were a way he could play both Giovanni and Leporello simultaneously... but alas... it cannot be.
I think Bryn Terfel is better as Don Giovanni. He is a natual Don Giovanni. I'd prefer him that way that leprello. However, he still does a great leprello.
Moreover, DG seems pretty unfair - he has quite a narrow escape (just imagine what a desperate man of Salminen`s bulk can do!), and if my screen and my sight are both OK, he simply stabs his opponent with a dagger shortly after being disarmed by him. JUST SPLENDID.
