  • remind me of a time when my mom and dad would have parties and endless tunes like this. love u mom and dad.

  • HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

  • Many versions of this beautiful song but this original always stays in my heart

  • His voice has so much soul.

  • The first Impression song on ABC it reached #2 on the R&B charts and #20 on the POP charts. Not 100% sure, but the record was probably recorded in 1960.

  • My fathers favorite song R.I.P. Ronald Morris i love you beyond Words

  • I like the feel of the persuasions version better but I prefer the chorus on this version, never the less a great song.

  • Omar from the wire listenin to this with Donny Andrews scopin out Monks apt....

  • @305chucko Landsman sung this in season 1 of The Wire as well.

  • My Aunt would give me a nickle and tell me to put it in the juke box and play this song. It was her favorite. Not many people liked her, most people were afraid of her but she was good to me. I would play it over and over for her. She had only beer in the fridge. A juke box in the living room. She carried a pistol and kept a rifle in her truck. I don't think I ever saw her smile. She was tall, beautiful chocolate skin with jet black hair down her back. I miss my Aunt Baby.

  • @elvirap - wonderful song - music is magic that moves time and space and brings us back to a memory :)

  • @elvirap I think I miss your Aunt Baby as well.

  • I remember the guys in the neighborhood singing this on the corner. Great, great musical talent and not given the credit he deserved. A real genius.

  • Curtis Live! version owns.

  • Curtis Mayfield Super soul at its finest singer song writer left infinite memories

  • This is a great tune, I just bought there Ultimate Collection and if you like Curtis Mayfield and Jerry Butler its a good album. In fact can anyone comment on jerry butler, i had no idea that he was the original lead or did Curtis Mayfield and Butler sing together any comments please

  • @Homesickblues1983 Jerry and Curtis were friends from church and childhood. Both joined The Roosters together, a group that had Sam Gooden, and Richard and Arthur Brooks as members. The group became The Impressions, but the big hit "For Your Precious Love" had Jerry Butler as the lead singer, and the label erroneously had his name featured as Jerry Butler & the Impressions. I can only imagine that it made the Brooks' angry. Jerry went solo, and the Brooks' left 2 years later. Fred Cash joined.

  • @Homesickblues1983 The trio of Mayfield, Gooden, and Cash continued throughout the 60's until Curtis started a solo career. They were one of the first, if not the first, black group to produce songs of social change like: Keep On Pushin', We're a Winner, Amen, People Get Ready, and more!

  • This year, this song will turn 50 years old! The eeriness of the song's beginning, the bass as it fades into silence. This is truly a classic in every sense of the word. It doesn't really seem to matter who does the song, we've all been that captain staring into that campfire light. Every woman has been that Gypsy Woman!

  • My mommy said boy how many times are going to play that. I said mom I can't help it.

  • This version came out in the sixties and that is definitely Curtis Mayfield singing lead in this version. I bought it when it first came out.

  • One of those men looked like Harry Belafonte.

  • Magnificent!

  • cold. colder tha curt? no one is.

  • just curious... I know Brian Hyland has a version... i heard one of mayfield... is this mayfield though? with some duwap group?

  • @GuitarristA1quimista Yeah Curtis Mayfield used to be in the group The Impressions and this is him singing on this version of the song I'm pretty sure. =D

  • @jade265 Curtis Mayfield was definitely with the group at the time of this big hit (in late 1961). Mayfield didn't leave the group until around 1970.

  • @GuitarristA1quimista with "some duwap group?" The Impressions are in the Rock&Roll Hall of Fame and heavily influenced and had greatly influenced the creation of reggae music.

  • One of my all-time favorites and it pains me some to realize that other versions (some pretty weak except for Brian Hylands) get many more views. I picked- up The Impressions Best of and I couldn't put it down and my world was changed by I'm so Proud, Sad Sad Girl & Boy, Minstrel and Queen, The one who really loves you, and so many more. What an outstanding writer and singer as well as the tenor and bass... A perfect timeless trio. If anyone knows what record Sister Love is on..let me know.

  • This has been one of my favorites since it came out in the 60s.I play it at least onve a week.

By the way I am an 81 year old WHITE male

  • Why do people pretend that redoing a song is equal to writing and creating a record from nothing? That's what Curtis Mayfield did here. Seven years later, having heard and obviously admiring the song,,Brian Hyland copies it to a slightly updated arrangement and we judge them on equal terms? Even you can sing a song you've heard on the radio.Try creating music from a blank canvas.

  • I have found it!! The original 1963 recording. Was kinda hard to find without the artist in the title, but thanks much for posting it.

  • it's funny, this was 1 of my dad's all-time faves, and as a child, i didn't care too much for it. but NOW, i realize what a beautiful song it really is.

  • This is my first time hearing this song im from the younger generation with an old soul so they have told me..... I like this....

  • This is such a wonderful song and Curtis' vocals are wonderful. Curtis' songwriting is legendary and this song was one of the first to showcase it. Timeless classic!

  • i loved this song too! yeah!

  • Curtis may be up there singing "Never Let Me Go," but thank's to Curtis, and other great one's, Doo-Wop will alway's be the greatest sounding music to one's ear.

  • Going back. I gotta show my stripe's.

  • Classic!!!!!!

  • Man! This takes my back to the high school days. Snuk into the Cuban Hall Patio club to see them along and Jerry Butler.

  • brians huh~ Curtis wrote it~ and no one absloutely noone has owned it~``

  • Beautiful song. In the television series "The Wire," this is the last thing Donnie and Omar listen to, before stepping into a mortal ambush. What a frightening contrast.

  • @phoniel Oh, yeah! That's how old school gangsters used to do things.

Nowadays, I imagine these kiddie gangsters listen to garbage rap and can't even hit the side of a barn.

  • @phoniel I remember that!!! Wow!!! :o brutal scene

  • a great song...

  • Yeah baby the Old Rooster's from Chicago, Mayfield, Butler, Cash & Gooden, may the live long in our hearts.

  • An amazing, intense, beautiful and creative song. Love it!

  • Love this tune, R.I.P. Curtis.

  • I can't get enough of that haunting intro!

  • This version is CLASSIC. so smooth!

  • Grew up on Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions, including Jerry Butler. Great song!

  • timeless classic this version anyway :)

  • Timeless Classic!

  • Una de las mejores canciones de la historia.Aqui volvieron a conseguir la perfeccion.

  • All those who like Brian Hyand's version, should listen to this and then decide.

  • @TheJackieo2006 yes, I've been debating which one was better for many years. This one probably is actually better though.

  • @TheJackieo2006 i did listen. this is good but i like bryans more so. better music.

  • @headredbone Better music? Who are you kidding? Nobody does Curtis better than Curtis. Especially Brian Hyland!

  • @littlenaitch2 aren't the recording artists lucky that we all have different likes and dislikes in music. would be bad for them if we all bought our music from only one artist.

  • @headredbone There are some exceptions. And as far as I'm concerned Curtis Mayfield is one of them. I have yet to hear any one of his great compositions to be out done by anyone else.

  • @littlenaitch2 i am so sorry that your musical listening habits seem to be limited.

  • @headredbone You are right. I don't listen to just anything you throw at me.

  • Thank you for posting this beautiful song

    my friend jolien.

  • a classic before its time back in 1961.

  • Curtis Mayfield, immortal and the talented Johnny Pate made Curtis' songs take flight. What a combination... Timeless...

    Worf

  • this the jam--I have gotten so much trim because of this song its unreal......good ol oldies doesnt get any better than this one.....

"How I like to hold her near"---

  • @Big55Mike I can imagine bruh!

  • Oh for the good old days !!! Thank you for your wonderful reply.

  • MUSIC !!!!!!!!!

  • @hapzap13 I agree. It doesn't get much better than this.

  • thank you so much for posting this classic and many blessings to you I need to hear this to let me take a walk back in time.

  • Truly a classic... thanks to Curtis and the Impressions..

  • Santana covered this song because he considers Curtis Mayfield a lyrical genuis.

  • I prefer Santana's cover

  • You are missed but never forgotten - beautiful lyrics and singing

  • Even though this is not a million seller, it has been recorded by almost 60 different artists and groups; not the least of which are Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Springsteen, Brian

Hyland, Jay and the Americans, Carlos Santana, Kim Wilson, the Persuasions, and a host of others. God bless everyone of you!

  • yep yall got this one right- the last comment was 7 months THAT JUST PROVES HOW PATHETIC CORPORATE ROBOT CRAP PERMEATES OUR AIR WAVES- YEAH WE REALLY NEED TO HEAR F--ING "LOVE ME TENDER ANOTHER 500 TIMES! HEY--BIG 3 RADIO CORPS SHOVE YOUR PLAY LISTS UP YOUR PISS HOLE/S-- YOU WOULD NEVER SUCH A TINY LIST UP YOUR ASSE'S

  • What A Classic ! Thx !

  • Mayfield needs to be inducted into the HOF for a 3rd time.

  • @jimithingjames AMEN TO GOD.

  • Great video and it sounds wonderful. Love this classic. Thank you!

  • AwesomE!. So glad u posted this song.

  • this the song so get ready for the groove that keep this song in your head cause it keep poping up just wait for it lol

  • The picture is a little misleading in that the Impressions still had five guys when they recorded this. By the way, Hendrix did a great version of this that I believe wasn't released until years after his death.

  • Gosh how I loved to watch Sam, he had a nice smile when he sang. Curtis' was the talent behind he group.

  • The impressions certainly had it goin on back then. Keep the memories alive; good job

  • @noodleandpeas Yes They Did ! A Superb Group !

  • One of my all-time favorites! What an exceptional collection you displayed. I'm deeply envious!

  • A TRUE CLASSIC
