@galatasarayfan67 Negative ghostrider. The one taking off vertically is the X-35B, which was only a concept model used for contract demostration. Early during the development phase of the F-35B SDD models it was concluded that vertical take off capability could not be achieved, specially during highly loaded missions. Thus the VTOL code was replaced for STOVL (Short Take-Off, Vertical Landing). The F-35B needs about 200 ft of runway to takeoff, which is close to vertical, but not quite
@falconwings "F-35B SDD models it was concluded that vertical take off capability could not be achieved"
Nope, a test pilot said a little while back that it was a requirement for it to be able to take off vertically and perform a vertical touch and go. It can do it just fine, plenty of spare thrust.
if you want to hear jets...go see a plane show...if you want to hear the ocean...go to the damn beach...enjoy the music and effort the person who made this vid put in.
Hell yeah! THIS STOVL IS A BEAST! So honoured to be a part of this historic moment! God bless the test pilots that fly each variant of our test acrft!
For all you haters. You will never understand why we built this aircraft. You will never believe that without it we would lose 5000 forward bases. Locations to deploy this aircraft that no conventional take off and landing aircraft could access. Locations that put it closer to the warfighter to help save our soldiers lives. God bless and safe return to all the men and women that put themselves in harms way for us.

@85LARGE VTOL was from the harrier and this is replacing the Harrier for the US marines.
Its has other aspects of other planes but the VTOL part is because of the harrier. Every VTOL craft is modeled on the Harrier because that plane is legendary and the best VTOL aircraft in the world.
If the Americans get this planes VTOL right then it could challenge the Harriers dominance in that area.
@ViDeOMaStErPaUl no one talks about the VTOL in general. Its the specific f35 engine design with one swing nozzle in the back and one whole turbine in the middle that is taken from yakovlev. Harrier is whole different story. It has four nozzles, two on each size of the fuselage. Google is your friend.
@thedothedew comparing Apples to Oranges is the same as comparing the F22 to the F35... different plane, different mission... F14 can drop bombs so why do we need B-52's... Semper Fi
@budda1125 Mmm I was in no way comparing the 35 to the 22, that would be like comparing the F117 to the F16, two different platforms and purposes. I was mainly just saying I'm happy to finally see progress with the JSF since the Raptors pretty much got grounded and havnt been used(to my knowledge).
Please upload a version without the music. I want to hear the jet engine and the ocean. (Unless you plan on using Danger Zone, because in that case all bets are off and you can ignore what I just said.)
@oriyast Your point is well taken. It is rumored that this variant has an extremely high db level, perhaps even unacceptably high. I am sure they will figure it out.
First, I thought fake. Although, I can't find a reason I think that. And no, we don't need a VSTOL F-35. We didn't need the Harrier, and we don't need this variant. A waste of money IMHO. It may be cool, but it's not functional.

@jdmess14hc I agree the F-35 is extremely functional, just the VSTOL variant is not needed. It has the cool factor, being able to T/O and Land in the vertical, but we have never "needed" a VSTOL variant in any war. It's old Cold War mentality. If anything, the Harrier had it's arse shot off during the 1st Gulf War. But, I still totally back the land-based (or even if they could work out a carrier based) variant of the F-35. Question is, why the hell did they not build more F-22's!

It's about time already and very impressive! This planes empty weight is 4,000lbs hevier than the F-15's. I remember reading an article with DARPA saying that was not possible. So much for that.
@mkeillor Yeah, I'm aware you're talking about the jet blast produced by VSTOL operation...although it's the same engine - they don't carry separate engines for VSTOL. I just haven't heard of any carrier (such as the aforementioned Big E) having problems with the downward-directed blast. I suspect the "problem" is limited to areas with non-skid coating. Although, the -35B does make a lot more thrust than the harrier...
@mkeillor Got a source for that? I'm not aware of such a problem. I've personally witnessed a Harrier tearing up concrete at a civilian airport (Batten Field, Racine, WI for anyone who wants to research it) but haven't heard of any problems putting 'em on either Nimitz class supercarriers or the light carriers that were built for 'em. Not saying you're wrong, just that I'm unaware of that and curious...and couldn't find it.
