Having heard the whole show in Berlin, I think you should give him another chance. I love Shawn Lane, but IA does a nice job of playing the songs without the atonal blazing that tends to beat you down after a while. I like it as much as the Lane stuff, not better just different.
I'm not loving what Mattias is doing here...he doesn't seem to play with the confidence, soul and touch of Lane. However, I must concede that filling Shawn Lane's boots is about the toughest gig around.
I love what IA does when playing with Hellborg. He gives a lot of freshness to what he does. Lane gave a lot of great stuff, but his roots were on other things, like Indian stuff. IA came from Zappa, so don't expect him to copy verbatim this kind of "confidence" you are talking about. I see a lot of soul on IA's playing and a lot more spacing and melody sense than some Lane's stuff. It's my opinion.
Shawn was most certainly not "rooted" in Indian music, he only got into that in the last years of his life. You might see a lot of "soul" and ok I respect that, but I see a lot of sloppy playing, bland phrasing and the rest of the cliches we expect from run of the mill shredders.
Hear, hear!I saw this show(I believe this is Wetzlar?)Sorry IA is awful(his playing and tone)We won't even get into his detestable "used car saleman" sthick. And man,to say this fool(IA) has anything to do w/ Zappa is BEYOND ignorant.Jonas hit a high point w/ Lane/Sipe.This band is going nowhere! I see the Johannsen bros had to play on the forth-coming cd,that already isn't a good sign of what's to come.
I like IA's play. :-)
He did great with Art Metal album.
More I listen more I understand how much that album can offer! He has his goodness to it. Of course I miss Shawn Lane, but that's another story.
