Threats of violence, being ostracized, or even killed keep these women successfully cowed. Also, seeing as it says right in the scripture that God's word is unchanging, divorce can't be made legal or else it violates his laws. You can't in one spot say that his laws are perfect and unchanging and then in another say that it is now changed.

2 - A theist is more well behaved with morals than an atheist, it is shown by statistics as well. An atheist has nothing to moralize him/herself for.
3 - Okay, so you agree that atheists drink more than Muslim/religious men since you did not bring that up. About atheists being more abusive (as a generalization) then Muslim, I will provide you statistics.

You're clearing using later commentary to make excuses for the text, which is sexist and disgusting. It may well be that Islam later changed its tradition to preclude actual beating of wives (though obviously many men still do so), but the Koran is talking about literal, physical violence to bring deviant women back into line.
