Jeffrey Gaines sang at my wedding this past August! Live in person up at Full Moon Resort/ Big Indian NY...this was our first dance! it was an unbelievable surprise! hopefully full moon resort uploads the photos i sent sometime this year!
Very soulful performance. Be sure to catch Jeffrey live at Listen Live Music in Zionsville PA (just west of Allentown PA) on Saturday evening, 11/26/11. This is a great house that only holds about 100 people, for a very intimate look at this great performer..
The Grand "Fur-Sahd"? I Love This Song BUT hate the way he says that. Peter Gabriel said it because he is from the UK and thats the way some accents are. Look at Oasis...Like A Sham-Pain-Super-"Nover" In The Sky. But if an American covered that song it would NOT be sang like that.. . .Unless! It was Jeffrey Gaines.
This video remindsme of one of those porno's that aren't in sync or in real time. Kinda like the ones you would see one show time in the 90's.... oh and I only know this from... er ah RESEARCH for a class in film school.... yeah that's it.
I really like JG a lot. I like PG even more. You just can't touch this song and do it justice. Lloyd Dobler knows what I'm talking about. Thanks, but no thanks.
The first 0:22 sec of the guitar reminds me of a song by Cross Canadian Ragweed called Alabama. Thats a good song too if you'v never heard it of heard of that band.
Best cover of this song EVER... What a great voice. However, even though I've had this song on my Ipod for years... I had no idea the JG was black. I litteraly JUST found out when this video loaded HAHAHAHAHA.
This cover is amazing dare I say better than the original but WTF is up with this video? Why does everyone look like they are at a rave and all fucked up on some X or something. The way they are dancing doesn't go with the style of this song at all. The jamaican guy is super creepy too, he looks like he just saw god and is gazing in awe haha.

@myfatizphat 100% of the time, when a video (or a movie/TV) is folmed there is NO music playing... Look closer at other vids and you'll see it. 80's movies are a classic example, unless it's a "dance" scene, nobody is EVER in time or looking like they're dancing to anything even remotely relevant... funny but true. My buddy works for hollywood lights here in Portland and I've been on set for a TON of videos and they NEVER play music, they just edit it all in post. Strange, I know...
@SamiraShuruk When and where did Ben Harper cover this song? Every version I find that claim to be Ben Harper are the Jeffrey Gaines version. The closest thing with Ben Harper's name I've found is him singing a completely different song called "Happy Everafter In Your Eyes." I'm be interested in hearing Ben Harper's version.
@MoreFogProductions Oops. You are right MoreFogProductions... I was mistakenly think the guy PainballinGodz knew something about a Ben Harper version.
I got to meet him when he played this little local cafe. Totally nice & wonderful guy, we just shot the shit for a bit about music in general, singing and such. Very, very cool. I just wish his original music got more recognition given how talented he is.
@yarddog59 : I'm not name calling. It's a sad fact today that people do not know their ass from their elbows. It's like seeing a Michael Jackson video and comparing him to Usher because he's black, dances and you were too out of touch to know who M.J. is? Apologies if I offended you.... But people play like they're authorities on music but you're depth of knowledge is only as deep as what pop radio was playing last month. This is the exact reason music is in the shape it's in right now...
For some reason, You Tube is not allowing web addys to be posted. Let me see if I can spell it out: wwwdotjeffreygainesdotcom) If you can't decipher that, do a Google on Jeffrey Gaines and check out his site.
@ZijnErNogNamenOver and @kaygeefive You are WRONG! This is 100% Jeffrey Gaines. I have followed him since his debut in 1992. I have met and spoken with him several times after gigs. This is HIM - if you think he sounds like Ben Harper - that's one thing, BUT I tell you unequivocally, it IS Jeffrey Gaines - he is a phenomenal artist and a wonderful person. Check out his website:
Just because you "downladed" it as Ben Harper to your little music collecton Does not mean that it is Ben Harper. Love some Ben Harper, It's all a conspiracy to steal his music!! Think NOT:)
@supoman7 Yes, he does, several. Go to his web site and you can buy digital copies and Amazon should have his physical CDS if you prefer. I recommend attending a show if he's in your area - he is a great artist/performer and a witty guy. Saw him at a coffee house a few weeks ago, another fantastic JG show. Took out Teenage son, who's also a musician and he loved him and had a great time chatting about music, etc. after the show. You will get your money's worth when you go to a JG show!
This cover is from 1994 originally. J.G has been doing this for almost 20 years... Touring around solo and with a band. He's one of the best performers alive.
Ben friggin' Harper...? Seriously? How about Jack Johnson...? You people are sheep.J.G. rules...

I discovered this awesome artist listening to his friend and fellow Philly, PA singer-song writer and musician TwinGhost Ronas who sings awesome covers of "No, I Don't Think So" and "I Know a Man." It is good to see him smile in this video; in his others, he seems so sad. When I hear his music, I cannot believe he did not break through. I love, love, love his lyrics and soulful songs. - Truth
It's kind of funny because the first time I heard this version was similar to when John Cusak first heard Lisa Bonet sing "Baby I love Your Way" in High Fidelity. I never really liked this song until this version.
Others have done good covers of In Your Eyes, but hands down, this guy has the best interpretation of this song. ..the voice, soul, feeling... just works very nicely.
I think that he actually did quite a flat version of the song. He has a good voice, but after the first verse you have heard all of the other ones as well. And where the song is supposed to explode in the chorus it just continues on the same level. Not a big fan of this version. Using only a guitar doesn't always work
actually, the lyrics arent the same...but whichever way i LOOK i come back to the place you are...and fursade is not a word...but i love this version and the original
Wow... EXCELLENT cover. Simple is good, and the heart is there! I love this song, and love that you've stripped it down to its basics and it still shines like the star it is, with the light you've given it. Thank you for sharing this.
The video does not even compare to hearing this man live. I saw him perform this past weekend and this (and many other songs) brought chills to my spine. What an incredible voice! Before you critisize I'd suggest checking him out live, you might be shutting out something you're going to really like before you even give it a chance!
i covered this tune a couple years ago....it always seems to get a great response, no matter who plays it....a testament to mr. gabriels song-writing prowess. you can still see my version if you like....just click on my channel. kiddies. and have a laugh!!
I heard this for the first time at the dentist office yesterday. I had to find out who remade Peter Gabriel's version.
There is a REASON why artists like Peter Gabriel and Sting were featured with other groups (i.e., Deep Forest, Dire Straits) and it is because they have wonderful vocals. When I heard THIS version the other day, I wanted to rip off my ears and make it stop. When remaking a song you should try and make it better than the original. It makes me glad I don't listen to radio.
i heard the peter gabriel version on the radio today at work and i thought 'i wish it was that acoustic cover i used to listen to all sneaky on my brother's computer'. i came home later with the craving and searched for this. my mom listened to peter gabriel all the time. i knew the words to this song when i was knee high to a grasshopper. but i now sing along to it the way jeffrey does. <3.
OMG - Pls I wish I never commented on this Song ! If YOU love Peter go Comment on his Song - If you love Mr. Gaines so it is ...... how its so complicated I don't know.
just so my last comment doesn't get destroyed. the reason i find it disturbing is the crowd is not dancing how people would dance to this song. and i find there faces disturbing. i don't want my comment to be misinterpreted as racism
Jeffrey's version is recovery at the end - its recovery a known relationship. There is that feeling - even though were on the outs - Its still alive and we still have something. Peter's version is the relationship has ended and its about reminiscing. Which I think why some feel Peter's version is stealth to those who have hurt. Its just my opinion. Both artists are to be commended for their talents. For their versions of the song.
@boxxxah Peter's isn't a version of the song... it's the original... and I'm sorry I don't get that at all from Peter's version... what I've taken away from it is a man who has finally found what he's been looking for in this one person... Honestly... I think the song is a blue print, on what one should look for in a relationship.
thank you C - because within the two artists - even so the lyrics are the same - Its not the same song. :) I love Jeffrey Gaines voice and flavor and he is NOT to be compared to Peter - he never meant to be- nor wanted to be compared with Peter.
Worst video ever, great version of the song, but WTF was the director thinking? "Everybody dance, forget that this is a relatively slow song, dance fast. We DO NOT want this to appear natural or real at all. Plus, at the end we're gonna but 3,000 people cheering. Yeah, that should be awesome."
@wylwrk ya its good. but the original is 12390501283 times better. I was sad to see that this song, a cover, is the only song hes famous for. No wonder he never made it big. You cant make it big playing other peoples music.
blows me away...fantastic acoustic & awesome vocals. new fan here!!! had this burnt on a CD for awhile now & no clue who it was til I did a search today & found him...LOVE IT!!!

Wow... EXCELLENT cover. Simple is good, and the heart is there! I love this song, and love that you've stripped it down to its basics and it still shines like the star it is, with the light you've given it. Thank you for sharing this.

Didn't think it was possible but Gaines totally outdid Peter Gabriel. This version is better.

awsome remake of this some. Made it his. Like it!!!

just so my last comment doesn't get destroyed. the reason i find it disturbing is the crowd is not dancing how people would dance to this song. and i find there faces disturbing. i don't want my comment to be misinterpreted as racism

For their versions of the song.
boxxxah 1 year ago
@boxxxah Peter's isn't a version of the song... it's the original... and I'm sorry I don't get that at all from Peter's version... what I've taken away from it is a man who has finally found what he's been looking for in this one person... Honestly... I think the song is a blue print, on what one should look for in a relationship.

@coraaalleigh
thank you C - because within the two artists - even so the lyrics are the same - Its not the same song. :) I love Jeffrey Gaines voice and flavor and he is NOT to be compared to Peter - he never meant to be- nor wanted to be compared with Peter.

there's two covers of this song i've downloaded, one said edwin mccain and one was ben harper . . . good to see credit where credit's due finally.

My opinion:
I enjoy Peter Gabriel's original version is much, much better than this.
I do think this guy does a good job and he sounds like Edwin McCain.
But I don't enjoy Jeffrey Gaines' version nearly as much.
He got so tired near the end.....he almost crashed!

Worst video ever, great version of the song, but WTF was the director thinking? "Everybody dance, forget that this is a relatively slow song, dance fast. We DO NOT want this to appear natural or real at all. Plus, at the end we're gonna but 3,000 people cheering. Yeah, that should be awesome."
baadshepherd 1 year ago 2
I agree they are both stellar. I like his take on the song. Subtle yet still very powerful.

Director says, "No people, we're going to dance NOT with the music! It's gonna blow people's minds!"
wylwrk 1 year ago 31
@wylwrk the dancing goes well with the feel and emotion of the song, so yes you are wrong.
krazyronaldo 1 year ago
@wylwrk ya its good. but the original is 12390501283 times better. I was sad to see that this song, a cover, is the only song hes famous for. No wonder he never made it big. You cant make it big playing other peoples music.

Jeffrey gaines has a great voice but I prefer close my eyes, this videoclip is horrible ! haaaaaa
it doesn't reflect the spirit of the song at all : where peter talk about real LOVE, he doesn't speak about love in a discotheque ...
