  • Great job!

  • Nicely done. The stick accent was a nice touch. I'm pretty sure Gadd dropped his drumstick at the same point in the solo on the original recording as you did. However he didn't think it was funny. I guess that's why you're there and he's over yonder. Someone said "smooth," I concur. Thanks for the lesson.

  • @stersnevet77 Thanks - appreciate your time and comments! I'm still playing this 3 yrs after, and haven't dropped my stick since. (in this song anyway)....Greg

  • Wow...you are sooo unreal at playing! Thanks for checkin' me out! :) .

  • @esxpaul arggg - don't tease me! I was just thinking the other day..........nah......they wouldn't want a drummer from way downunder. I dream on. ( BTW I know their whole rep : -)

  • Oh My God you are fucking awesome, your time is perfect, your technique is smooth and flawless, and the sound of your drums is beautiful. If I could play like that, I would consider myself having really accomplished something in life.

Please, how did you arrive at such a gorgeous drum sound?

  • @ScorningMensa Thank - you for your time and comment. I have spent most of my life playing and recording drums and music. I just use SM57's , EV's (just normal mic's.) Into a Tascam 20ch desk. Recorded onto a Yamaha AW1600, then uploaded into my PC and use Sonar DAW. I guess it's my ear that gets the clarity. Glad you enjoyed the clip! Cheers, Greg

  • Good job, especially the drum tuning / audio!

  • @boom0549 Thanks, appreciate your time. Greg

  • @drummer3562 Thanks.......a great track that is a never ending pleasure to....um......emulate? Bless Donald and Walter and all the others along the way.

  • Great playing dude, choice song, can you please get back to me about the persian rug,say $50.Cheers Matt

  • @MattZapparro Yeah, 50 will do it. Do u want the fleas with it? (Flee of charge!)

  • Yes- I think being relaxed is v. important. Also if you look close you'll see the stick tip just catches under the rim of the tom. This happens to me a lot as I am always moving my tom positions according to the kit I am playing. My wrists stay low when I play so I try to get the toms as low/flat as possible. Thanks for your time! Greg

  • Congrats!!!! very nice, I like the detail of leaving in the part of the drumstick falling off.

That has happened to me countless times and I remember how emabarrasing used to be specially on live performances. Then I started takin it easy and does´t bother me anymore, but I wonder if it has to do with a poor stick gripping or what? In my case I remember that I´m very relaxed while playing, so, I blame it on that.

Anyway, I love SD and you did great on this take, the band sounds very cool too!

  • Terrific, love SD, hate covers; loved this :) Great to see a musician who's a real artist and a group who so obviously enjoy what they're doing; long day but now chillaxed and mellow... What a lovely way to spend your time. Thank-you.

  • @KMillss - appreciate your words. Makes our efforts even more worth while. We continue to play SD music every week and will post some more vids. We have moved into the "Jam Hub" phase now. I have made an e-kit (all mesh heads) due to some noise restrictions now, but all for the cause. Thanks again!

  • spot on!

  • dude. This is the best Steely dan cover i've ever heard before. Some many people just butcher the music when they try. Your band is tight as hell and you played the shit out of that song. Not an easy task. Well done bro.

  • @guysanzo pierre0 bassist here -many thanks for your generous compliments. How cool is our Greg0 -not just the drummer from hell, but our tech head as well?! Going behind the scenes a little here, the noise is generated LIVE by 5 people [1 contribution being James on vox] so, the other giant in this output is Mikey on keys, who covers piano, sax lead, marimba, chords & and melodies simultaneously without even breaking a sweat!! Regards, pierre0.

  • I really enjoyed this.. thanks for posting it. Could you please explain how you miced you kit? mic's pre's etc? thanks fro AUSTRALIA!

  • @remoman

Thank you. I use a Yamaha AW1600 to record the band - but my mics go through a Tascam 20 channel mixer first. I dont use any extra pre's or external gear for processing apart from the Yammy and the Tascam desks. I use an EV N/D 868 on the Kick. EV PL9 (old) on Hats. SM 57 on Snare & toms and a Piezo plate mic just out of shot on the boom stand for overheads. After I transfer the8 audio tracks to my PC for mixing in Sonar7 PE. Let me know if u need more info. Greg

  • Is that Greg Ohlgadd on the drums?

    z

  • Yes! The click and all. Who would have ever thought that little stick click could be so amazing. Thats what separates the artists from the others. Great job, all of you. I have a poker game every Memorial Day. Allways new people every year, I play this real late after everyone is "feeling good", I actually envy their virginity to this.

  • well done man ..

  • Great job.......Spot on......

  • Hey there On The Roof1 - although it was asked 8 months ago, I think the answer to your question - how did you come by this play-along - is: Greg sat his point & Shoot camera by his mixer and grabbed a video run and took home the Yamaha 16 track live recording and edited it onto the video run. Regards,P.air [Curry Club bassist]

  • wow!! amazing cover.. aja is one of my fav albums of all time

  • LOVE IT! I drop my sticks all the fucking time. Ugh. You played right through it. Great!!

    Xavier

  • Hi and thanks! I am actually playing live with my band. I am in the drum booth and Keys, Bass, guit and vocalist in next room. What you hear is all live.

  • Sweet ;)

  • great job! i know how it feels, with that stick drop right before one of your favorite parts.. keep it up, and check out my humble videos sometime :)

  • Thanks - checked out your vid - excellent. I dont think my thing is odd-time stuff, but you nail it!!I saw Tal and Keith & Wayne in Sydney, and Keith with SDan also.

  • Excellent!! I saw Tal, Wayne, and Keith in NYC this past October...actually, i made a special trip from Florida up there just for the concert. and MAN, it was worth it!! The pinnacle of musicianship, if you ask me :)

    take care!!

  • Sweet.U R in Florida... I have a friend who owns a motel in the Bahamas..hes begging me to visit and record with him, long flight(s) for me in Sydney, but that would be worth it too!

  • couldnt look away!

  • Hey, that is the greatest compliment a person could get. Thanks for your time! Am on my way to check out your home page. Cheers, Greg

  • Hi Greg, great sounds coming out of that cellar! Looking forward to the Kid Vid!

    p_air.

  • Oh, this is a very nice play. Well played. Your playing style has a good rythm-keeping and is so steady. I hope that the guitar player had more ideas.

  • This was just a rehearsal, so please dont be hard on my band. I mainly posted this for drummers and was proud of my drum take. Thanks for your comments! Greg

  • As a Loooong time SD fan, I gotta tell you, YOU ARE THE MAN!. Excellent playing.

  • Really well played

  • Hey thanks. I checked your H/page out - Great stuff. How good is SD to play to. Every type of feel, fill you'd ever need. I am working on a vid of Kid Charlemagne with all our band and hope to post it soon.

  • It took me awhile until I was comfortable playing SD. It's not always easy but is fun to play. Keep the videos coming.

  • That's great! So if any of your bandmates want to do a video of the guitar work for Chained Lightning, I'm now hacking at guitar and would appreciate any guidance I could get... A different genre from the same band but what a great tune.

  • Hey - good call. We do a lot of their stuff, but haven't hit that yet. I will suggest it. We are in the middle of doing a vid of Kid Charl, this time with ALL of us. (I think I got them inspired with my little drum vids) I'll keep in touch - did you see my Gaucho clip? it was my first one.

  • I'm a SD lover and recreational drummer from way back and this was my all-time favourite drumming song. Excellent work capturing this and thanks for posting.

  • Thank you. I used to come home from school, put the Aja album on my record player and play drums to it. Now my friends and I get together once a week to play lots of SD tunes.
