It is actually worse! Don't race off as soon as you get a green traffic light. It is pretty common to see a public bus still rolling over the intersection.
If I take a taxi home at night (after 2300 or so) it is pretty normal that he will do at least 5 red lights in 15 minutes. At least I am safer inside his car than out there in my tiny scooter hehe.
So far survived 3,5 years living here with no crashes, though a few taxi's tried :-S
I live in Taiwan. I can tell you from first hand experience that such stupidity goes on all the time. At most, one in ten Taiwanese knows how to drive properly.
The Taiwanese are Confucianists, and to them, "Strangers don't exists". Meaning, if you're in public and you don't see anybody you know, "it's okay to break the law!" If somebody ran a red light in the US and caused an accident, bystanders would report it; in Taiwan, they'd walk away and say nothing.

some run red lights all the time like this idiot...I find it funny and sad at the same time that no one gives a shit about him crashing...
