well that is a concept to expand upon certainly. But American state schools have on the whole increased tuition since the early 80s by 300-500% more than inflation ... maybe if special interest groups and fear-mongering lawyers would of left the system alone it would still be affordable (although not free).
I mean if you ask me, instead of pumping all this money into welfare systems they should pump it into education and make university free. That way, you would not have all these people that need to be taken care of because they will have a brain, and will be useful members of society. Everything is so backwards that it hurts. I mean in Sweden and Germany it is only about 300 Euros a year for university. Why do I pay nearly 8000? Equal opportunity is a fairy tale.
Well that would certainly be a better place for tax payers dollars than welfare. However, I wonder how motivated many of today's youth would be at college if they didnt have to pay for tuition (and possibly also board?) ... it might be just as good to offer free or at least lower tuition to those who can maintain higher GPAs (in harder programs) and higher tuition to those with lower GPAs, this would benefit taxpayers as well. Your thoughts?
Well that is exactly what scholarships do. Making university free would offer people a never ending opportunity to get themselves out of the life-rut they are in and change it. If you ask me, we should simultaneously decriminalize ALL drugs, that way all the morons will immediately overdose on crack and heroin and they won't even need to rob a house to do it. Those who remain can then use drugs responsibly and free their minds with education, understanding and experience. A man can only dream.
Yes I suppose my suggestion sounded like scholarships, but I meant if someone could maintain a 3.5 or better they would have all tuition costs covered, 3.0 or better 50%, something like that. Although I think slashing tuition for all to 20% of present levels by stopping all special interest spending and lawyer fees is better. As for drugs, Im sure that would be the case much of the time, but wouldnt legalization mean high prices and lots of morons stealing to afford it?
Well that would be definitely better than it is right now, but I don't see the problem with just making it totally free. If you are failing, you get kicked out, and maybe get 3 chances to try again or something. As for drugs, the only reason they are expensive is because they are illegal. The risk drives up the cost. If anyone at all can just go plant a garden and grow their 'drugs' themselves, the incentive for high prices and crime would fall astronomically and instantly. Jails would be empty.
I would only vote for totally free if it did not increase taxes and students of that age group were responsible enough to not take advantage of that system. As for drugs, your hypothesis is possible but I imagine governments would regulate legalized drugs (especially hard ones that are possibly fatal and addictive) which would keep their prices still high (although maybe comparatively cheaper than when illegal. I also would feel less safe in a land where drugs were legalized.
You would be surprised to see how much difference decriminalizing drugs makes concerning crime rate and addiction rates. Look at Holland, drugs are legal there and they have far fewer addicts than in other countries where drugs are illegal. Also, there is so much organized crime revolving around drugs, and that is where the violence comes from. It is not the drugs that cause the violence, it is the fact that they are illegal. Nobody kills over cigarette trading, but they would if it was illegal.
Hmm, well again you make good points. Are heroin and coke legal there as well do you know? I will agree there is much crime surrounding illegal drugs (look at Mexico now). However my feeling is that I would feel less safe (in the USA at least) if all drugs were legalized as there'd be more people going around in public stoned/high, etc. I guess an anology would be there were likely less deaths/accidents from drunk driving during prohibition than today.
Maybe concerning drunk driving etc that is true (although drunk driving was not illegal at that time) however, the prohibition is the whole reason Al Capone existed. That whole organized crime syndicate essentially arose because alcohol was illegal. And that is the lesson here. There would be no Pablo Escobars in the world if drugs were not illegal. And yes coke and heroin are decriminalized in Holland (not LEGAL). I am not supporting the LEGALITY of drugs, only the decriminalization.
People are not born equal with equal opportunites. The RICH are born into wealth !!! Beck is crazy and out of touch! The rich keep on getting richer and the poor mostly stay poor. Beck needs to lose all of this money then he will know what it is like to be poor.
glenn made himself rich. he was not always rich. some are not born with equal opportunities - that is what he is SAYING! go fix your life, and stop whining about it! that's the message here.
There is no equal opportunity. If there was, university would be free.
