Honestly my brothers phone picks up 3D gaming and does a lot of shit, It's an EVO 3D. What the hell can a punk ass gaming handheld do, overall in experience with them throughout my years they aren't worth it and they get updated every second. Phones vs Gaming Hanheld debate is like saying PC vs Console Gaming. You can do so much more on PC and all together it's worth it though maybe a more expensive option. This year it's a vita, 3ds, next year it's something else. Bunch of crap.
But I got an Xperia Play the other month (and I'm watching this video on it) and I find it very comfortable and the screen is big enough to enjoy watching videos and I think it's capable of gaming on a much higher level than other smartphones.
I'm watching this vid from my Xperia Play. I don't game a lot lately so this statisfies my needs. It also allows me everything else you can do on a smartphone and the screen is big enough to be comfortable to surf, game, watch movies, ...
I don't find that many things wrong with the iPhone and android (and I own both, iPhone 3gs, and I recently got a Droid X). I agree, these are fun for the short bus or metro rides whenever I go out. I agree with mike, I can't really pay attention to a full blown game at times like those. But I'm a hardcore gamer, and at home, or during long travels, I need hardcore games that will keep my attention....WITH PHYSICAL BUTTONS and not meh touchscreens!
I'm satisfied with my 3DS at the moment. And even if I get a phone, I'd also be satisfied with just a normal cell. Besides, not a lot of people would leave Nintendo or Sony for Apple.
I have iPad, iPod touch, PSP, and used to have a ds, and I find the closest thing to real games in the classical sense are shitty rip off crap from game loft. Those games are horrendous with minimum thought, quality, and effort in general put in the game. I admit that I dont play my PSP that much, but thats more because of the game selection, not because I'm busy playing NOVA 2 or anything
the reason i'll never buy another dedicated handheld is i've learned about my gaming habits. my psp and ds both collected dust... i think cause i only want to play something time consuming on my home consoles. when i'm in public, i want to play something casual for a few minutes and the reason i love my ipad soo much. plus if i buy a game and don't play it, i don't feel too bad, it was only a few bucks that i could delete the game and not care.
They're both right, but if I had to pick a side,I'd go with the girl, not the guy.I want a full experience as opposed to something quick like an iTouch.not to say I dont like mobile gaming,I have in iPod touch(which I'm typing this on)and a DSi.I use my DSi for gaming, and my iPod for watching vids, picture, and the occasional game :3
I keep a spare yo-yo to entertain me a few minutes, on the go. Ladies are more curious when your playing a yo-yo on the go, than playing video games on the go. ;)
what about on long flights, like when i fly from the US to Australia i would have died without my psp, you cant play lets say angry birds for like 12 hours.
I find it interesting most cell plans allow for upgrades after two years...which pretty much means the life of the cell phone is destined to be ~2 yrs. I want a longer life out of my portable gaming devices. If I were to play pokemon on a cell phone that battery would be decimated in a hurry.
Hey i have a psp i have all the apps that u can have on psp i have a 16gb memory stick card and i have a 100 apps and 300 games!! Weeee!! All the way psp!! I LOVE Playing old retro Mario and Pokemon!! I even have PSP Ds Emulator!! Wee all the way!!
@inf3rnalBlade iphone wasnt made for gamin and the psp is <.< and most games came out when there was the iphone 3 and they always will make games that a old iphone can handle or they wont sell the apo , sorry for my bad english
I suck at angry birds :( but its very addictive and fun but tbh i can enjoy both types of gaming but tbh downloadble gaming is the way forward no matter what guys disks are going to be discontinued in the future
I normally perfer handheld, but the Sony Ecrisson Xperia Play has really caught my attention, it can be used as a smart phone and as a gaming machine, but with buttons!
I will have the money to buy both the NGP and the PlayStation Phone, but I only want to have one, and I think I will go out and get the PlayStation Phone.
I just recenty found your channel, and I have to say you guys, and gal, have quickly become my favorite reviewers. I love the show, it's super funny, and entertaining. And kat, your beautiful, just saying. Keep it up
A small suggestion to 3KB. You guys should start making trophy/achievement videos. They are very short and you can score a lot of views and subscribers. Many other review shows do it except their reviews are SHIT and they still get ridiculous number of views. I'm only suggesting this cause I love your show so...
I very much prefer handheld over mobile because of 2 reasons:
1: I own a DSi, plan to get a 3DS, and I think you get more bang for your buck out of portables. You want to know how many DS games I own? 5. And they're all DAMN LONG FOR HELL'S SAKE!!!!
2: I HATE Iphones and Androids. They piss me off SO DAMN MUCH!! The games are too short, the graphics are bullsh*t and if I were to get a cellphone, I want a regular cellphone with speed dial, a camera, and customizable ringtones.THAT'S IT! NO MORE!
buttons are what make the handheld better, otherwise it just feels like you have very little control over your characters. like for example on the iphone. the joysticks are very lame, and yes i know so is the psp's ONE JOYSTICK but it feels on the psp you have more control.
I had a DS lite in undergrad, but I only played Mario Kart, and like he said, I couldn't get into a deeper game while on the go. I just wanted something I could pick up, tool around with, and then be done with.
So now, I just got a tablet and home console, and I haven't played my DS in at least a year if not much longer.
I have never been able to really enjoy an iPod touch game. There have been fun ones, but overall they're too simple and shallow. And then the best iOS games are the ports of SNES classics. There's also the fact that both ipod Touches that I have owned over the years have had terrible battery life. Can barely play for an hour before you're at 20% from full. That doesn't work as a on the go gaming solution.
Also I prefer handheld because the games on the iPhone and iPod just don't entertain me. But everyone is different, I have 1 pages of apps were as my bro has like 8 or 9
I have DSi, 3DS, PSP, GameGear, etc. Im not a big fan of mobile gaming but I do play some sometimes. I like playing handhelds but lately I havent been playing any because there are almost no original titles left for them. Even the 3DS so far has been a little boring because there isn't anything interesting enough for me to play. No matter what though I will always have and purchase handheld consoles because I grew up with them.
I guess im not away from home long enough that a handheld console would make sense. When im away from home i go to work or to the university. It takes me like 20mins to get there. Perfect for some NinJump or AngryBirds. But no time at all for anything with a story... I coudnt enjoy it anyway - i'd be always interrupted.
Oh and for the very long drive or even flight there is my PSX emulator on my Android Baby with FF7 :)
I find mobile games too short and uninvolving - they'll interest me for five minutes and then I wonder why I wasted my money on them. Even if it is 99 pence. To be honest, handheld games aren't much better - they're overpriced and almost always not a scratch on their console counterparts. I'd rather read a book on the way home from work, and then play the proper game when I get home, not a watered down rip off.
@3killabytes why is it always just 2 of you guys and even when all 3 of you are there one person always has not played the game you talking about or watch the movie you reviewing? New name 2KB. As for handheld games I have ton of $40 UMDs but seems sony is droping UMDs seeing how the psp GO failed and making anther UMD less hand held.
I have a PSP, 3DS, DSi, and iPod Touch. I use my PSP and 3DS a lot but I only use iPod for music and reading emails. I feel that when I want to play a game it needs to feel like a full experience
Mobile games are crap, the low price is good, but the low quality is, well, bad. They're short, bad graphics, shoddy controls, the screen is too small and about 95% of all games on the appstore are awful. Angry Birds is so boring and repetitive, what is the big fuss? Handheld games have better controls, graphics, longer and overall better and more fun. Even casual games are better on PSP/NDS. And phones are for phones and iPods are for music and video, neither should be used for crappy games...
OH MY GOD KAT THANK YOU for finally bringing up why the psp is genius! why does every legitimate review show pretend like CFW and homebrew don't exist? the reason i still have a psp is because i use it for ebooks, comics, games and retro shit. sure, homebrew exists on DSs jailbroken apple stuff as well, but it's a pain in the ass on an iphone because it has no buttons, and on the DS, well, i know it exists, but i don't know anyone serious about gaming enough to install CFW who doesn't own a psp
I KAT YOU'RE AWESOME! SAY HI TO THE CREW FROM ME PLZ! YOU GUYS RULE! sorry, i just kinda have to do that if i get a response from one of the 3KBs themselves, right?
i have always preferred handheld gaming, even some times to console games because i find i can get more comfortable while playing handheld games. Also im a huge RPG fan and a majority of the traditional Rpgs come out on the DS and PSP
This is what I really people think the Iphone apps and PSP or DS games. Its not the same thing . Its called a app for a reason, A PSP game is a video game not a app. Please I dont like playing games with fucking touch screen it never works and alot games that Iphone has is really bad with the touch screen.
If you Like RPGs check out Battleheart for the iPhone it's just soo addicting it's only one of two mobile games that I actually decided not to go on the Xbox or computer to play a game, I went on my phone. The other is infinity blade, which no doubt many of you will have heard of.
as much as i love handheld games and i own my share of gameboys, DS's and psps, i never really seem to buy a tons of games for them. phone app has the convenience of the store right in your hand with review and picture and very easy accessable interface. portable games to me is to pass the time, i know there are great games for handheld, but if im going to sit and immerse myself to a game, i might as well play it on my console and get the full experience, big screen, surround sound and all :)
Mobile Gaming for me is more for when im like at work taking a break, doctors office, transportation etc. Short length breaks basically, Where handhelds are more when you go take long car trips, or fly off to see family, or when you go somewhere and are stuck at a certain location for a long while for a great deal of time. Thats my view, its 50/50 I love both of them. Beats Solitaire by a long shot.
If one wants to have a full experience in a series like Kingdom Hearts, Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, the person must play the psp games, they're just amazing.
i used to have a PSP but i got boored of it cuz of the lack of full games and not just big ported big titles but now i got a 3DS and i do like hanheld gameing. but i also have to say that on the cellphone app games is the place were originality isnt an alien concept and that they make very fun games for cellphones and they are easy to just pick up and play for 10 mins
I disagree with you Mike,I totally play my psp super heavy story based games like Kingdom hearts BBS and FF7CC- and tottaly get involved not carying about the world for those precious minutes on the bus that I woudl be wasting doing fucking nothing If I didnt have a psp and DS.
@alef321 I agree with your disagreement. Full "console style" games can totally be played and on the go, thanks to the sleep function on most handhelds (PSP, DS etc) you can stop your progress at anytime then resume when you want.
But I may be biased, I don't own an iPhone and have no interest in getting one.
i have a psp but dont really use it any more i mostly use my Gameboy advanced SP for portable gaming and i dont have a phone that has apps cuz i hate touch screens with a passion!!!!
Handheld for me, but that might change when the Xperia Play (Playstation phone) comes out. I would just prefer a real game then a cheap little app that I will bored of in 5 minutes.
I prefer both. On long trips or waits I like to have a long engaging games. Sometimes apps aren't enough, or get boring. On the contrary sometimes I want to play for like 5 or 10 minutes, not 1 or 2 hours. Both have a play for most hardcore gamers.
I know this sounds wierd but I dont want my phone/gaming system/computer on one universal device. somtimes it seems a little overwhelming. when i play my PSP i dont surf the internet with it, i usaully dont listen to music on it either. even tho it gives me those options, i only play the games, and i make sure they are good games thats my opinion
Iphones etc are better because 1, you get like Notes and stuff, Calendar, Alarm clock a LOT more games, a lot of variety to choose from and it also comes with the phone!
I like both evenly. I love short games like Angry Birds! But I like full on the go games like, say Pokemon as well. Mobile games are good for a spare minute while handheld games are good for when ur away from your console for several hours. :)
heres my take on it. I go to shows alot (seeing bands play at bars) and between sets i whip out my iphone and play a quick angry birds or cut the rope. But this can hold my attention for about 5 minutes at the most. its quick so i have something to do. yes its entertaining but its not gaming gaming. On a bus i would much rather play my psp or ds. this can keep me entertained for hours
Even though I have both the iPhone and 3DS, I prefer the 3DS for the ultimate gaming experience on the go. Precision-wise, touch-screen controls cannot beat against the physical analog thumbstick and buttons. If I want a quick puzzle game, the iPhone has enough of those games to keep me satisfied.
I like on the go gaming, quick and easy gaming on iPod Touch/iPhone but that's only because I don't do alot of gaming away from my console and therefore prefer free or cheap portable gaming.
Does any one get the title irony. Mobile are handhelds and handhelds are mobile ;) But im with kat on this one. Mike has a simple mind so simple games are good for him.
@AroundWayOtherThe That's the new PSP2 in development! So far it's codenamed the NGP (Next Gen Portable) It has 2 analog sticks, along with the power of an Xbox 360, and 2 touch screens, so it's a beast that you can put in your pocket!
I love playing some game apps on my Android, but if Handheld gaming is done right then it truly is better! I think gamers should follow the step of what MGS: Peace Walker did! It's just a big massive game, but they break the missions into 10 - 15 minute missions so you can play a mission on your way to school, or during lunch, or when you're bored or something, and makes it feel much better. It gives you a full blown MGS experience but in bite size pieces.
i use to play a lot of handheld games but now i play on my phone more, but im getting the xperia play which is a combo of psp and droids so its like both handheld and mobile at once
I agree with mike but I feel like it's an opinion. If you enjoy playing games on the go I would recommend handheld systems because of the better quality. If you aren't really into it and you just want something fun to pass the time than I would recommend the cheaper and more convenient mobile games.
totall agree with Mike - I would rather pay for a 'proper' game and give it quality time at home rather than pay over the odds for a game that I would never really get into...I mean, on the go gaming should be quick and fun...more arcade than memory cards saves
@zoneBOMB I disagree. I think that handheld gaming has the potential of being just as hardcore as console gaming but nobody has really stepped up and tried to do it. The closest we've gotten is the PSP but that didn't have nearly enough 3rd party support but hopefully the NGP can change that. Also, I don't like when people mention 'mobile gaming is cheaper'. I'm not looking for a price I'm looking for good quality games and quality games are worth paying for. $1 games are like minigames.
I play both, I play stuff like Angry Birds when I have 5 min to spare on my phone but sometimes I prefer to play like an old-school RPG on my PSP when I'm on a roadtrip or something.

GameTimeRoom 9 months ago
Mobile games are crap, the low price is good, but the low quality is, well, bad. They're short, bad graphics, shoddy controls, the screen is too small and about 95% of all games on the appstore are awful. Angry Birds is so boring and repetitive, what is the big fuss? Handheld games have better controls, graphics, longer and overall better and more fun. Even casual games are better on PSP/NDS. And phones are for phones and iPods are for music and video, neither should be used for crappy games...

OH MY GOD KAT THANK YOU for finally bringing up why the psp is genius! why does every legitimate review show pretend like CFW and homebrew don't exist? the reason i still have a psp is because i use it for ebooks, comics, games and retro shit. sure, homebrew exists on DSs jailbroken apple stuff as well, but it's a pain in the ass on an iphone because it has no buttons, and on the DS, well, i know it exists, but i don't know anyone serious about gaming enough to install CFW who doesn't own a psp

i have always preferred handheld gaming, even some times to console games because i find i can get more comfortable while playing handheld games. Also im a huge RPG fan and a majority of the traditional Rpgs come out on the DS and PSP
XxVicistxX 9 months ago
This is what I really people think the Iphone apps and PSP or DS games. Its not the same thing . Its called a app for a reason, A PSP game is a video game not a app. Please I dont like playing games with fucking touch screen it never works and alot games that Iphone has is really bad with the touch screen.
Blackwolf454 9 months ago
here is why mobile beat handheld...
you play it on your music player/phone and most of the game are $1 to $5
mobile game u pay like $250....for a gaming console on the go....and the games cost alot

If you Like RPGs check out Battleheart for the iPhone it's just soo addicting it's only one of two mobile games that I actually decided not to go on the Xbox or computer to play a game, I went on my phone. The other is infinity blade, which no doubt many of you will have heard of.

BuzzyGaming 9 months ago
as much as i love handheld games and i own my share of gameboys, DS's and psps, i never really seem to buy a tons of games for them. phone app has the convenience of the store right in your hand with review and picture and very easy accessable interface. portable games to me is to pass the time, i know there are great games for handheld, but if im going to sit and immerse myself to a game, i might as well play it on my console and get the full experience, big screen, surround sound and all :)
thanatos84 9 months ago

I disagree with you Mike,I totally play my psp super heavy story based games like Kingdom hearts BBS and FF7CC- and tottaly get involved not carying about the world for those precious minutes on the bus that I woudl be wasting doing fucking nothing If I didnt have a psp and DS.
alef321 9 months ago
@alef321 I agree with your disagreement. Full "console style" games can totally be played and on the go, thanks to the sleep function on most handhelds (PSP, DS etc) you can stop your progress at anytime then resume when you want.
But I may be biased, I don't own an iPhone and have no interest in getting one.

Ironbl00d 9 months ago
Handheld for me, but that might change when the Xperia Play (Playstation phone) comes out. I would just prefer a real game then a cheap little app that I will bored of in 5 minutes.
GamerBaron 9 months ago
I prefer both. On long trips or waits I like to have a long engaging games. Sometimes apps aren't enough, or get boring. On the contrary sometimes I want to play for like 5 or 10 minutes, not 1 or 2 hours. Both have a play for most hardcore gamers.
OmegaFujin 9 months ago
personally I prefer iPod touch because of a huge variety of casual dollar games incan get from my house
emerorofbroccoli 9 months ago
I know this sounds wierd but I dont want my phone/gaming system/computer on one universal device. somtimes it seems a little overwhelming. when i play my PSP i dont surf the internet with it, i usaully dont listen to music on it either. even tho it gives me those options, i only play the games, and i make sure they are good games thats my opinion
Domoman1999 9 months ago
Iphones etc are better because 1, you get like Notes and stuff, Calendar, Alarm clock a LOT more games, a lot of variety to choose from and it also comes with the phone!

I like both evenly. I love short games like Angry Birds! But I like full on the go games like, say Pokemon as well. Mobile games are good for a spare minute while handheld games are good for when ur away from your console for several hours. :)

bigwil311 9 months ago
heres my take on it. I go to shows alot (seeing bands play at bars) and between sets i whip out my iphone and play a quick angry birds or cut the rope. But this can hold my attention for about 5 minutes at the most. its quick so i have something to do. yes its entertaining but its not gaming gaming. On a bus i would much rather play my psp or ds. this can keep me entertained for hours
muanddad 9 months ago
mike, how do you not mention infinity blade....
malubeast700 9 months ago
Even though I have both the iPhone and 3DS, I prefer the 3DS for the ultimate gaming experience on the go. Precision-wise, touch-screen controls cannot beat against the physical analog thumbstick and buttons. If I want a quick puzzle game, the iPhone has enough of those games to keep me satisfied.
nintendomaster 9 months ago
I like on the go gaming, quick and easy gaming on iPod Touch/iPhone but that's only because I don't do alot of gaming away from my console and therefore prefer free or cheap portable gaming.

AroundWayOtherThe 9 months ago
@AroundWayOtherThe Yep, 2 two analogs. It's called the NGP (Next Generation Portable). Look it up.
DamnMexicanFlying 9 months ago
@AroundWayOtherThe That's the new PSP2 in development! So far it's codenamed the NGP (Next Gen Portable) It has 2 analog sticks, along with the power of an Xbox 360, and 2 touch screens, so it's a beast that you can put in your pocket!
Anoush13 9 months ago
I love playing some game apps on my Android, but if Handheld gaming is done right then it truly is better! I think gamers should follow the step of what MGS: Peace Walker did! It's just a big massive game, but they break the missions into 10 - 15 minute missions so you can play a mission on your way to school, or during lunch, or when you're bored or something, and makes it feel much better. It gives you a full blown MGS experience but in bite size pieces.

There are some very high quality games for iOS. I got Dead Space for a buck, and that game is phenomenal for a phone game.
GenomeSoldier71 9 months ago
I agree with mike but I feel like it's an opinion. If you enjoy playing games on the go I would recommend handheld systems because of the better quality. If you aren't really into it and you just want something fun to pass the time than I would recommend the cheaper and more convenient mobile games.
pidgeon63 9 months ago
you cant play zelda on the iphone
ThePossumReport 9 months ago
I play both, but mostly i take my iPod with me when ever i go out the PSP is just sitting there
LeoTechGamerRKO 9 months ago
totall agree with Mike - I would rather pay for a 'proper' game and give it quality time at home rather than pay over the odds for a game that I would never really get into...I mean, on the go gaming should be quick and fun...more arcade than memory cards saves
zoneBOMB 9 months ago 34
@zoneBOMB I disagree. I think that handheld gaming has the potential of being just as hardcore as console gaming but nobody has really stepped up and tried to do it. The closest we've gotten is the PSP but that didn't have nearly enough 3rd party support but hopefully the NGP can change that. Also, I don't like when people mention 'mobile gaming is cheaper'. I'm not looking for a price I'm looking for good quality games and quality games are worth paying for. $1 games are like minigames.
