But why does Mark look undead? He may be crying as he is singing but why can't he give his singing the passion like he used to? Perhaps it is just too painful?+
No matter what live version of this song I watch it always seems like he is reliving something that happened to him. His heart surely breaks every time he plays this song. The intensity he puts into the song comes from a place that only a broken heart can create......
oh goodness, i should not start linking throught the dire straits suggested videos. once i start i will not stop, because i'll find things like ^ this.
Not being a big Dire Straits fan and never hearing this song before, I have to say I really love the way he performs the first two verses here. The words are touching and his delivery is deeply emotive, it packs a punch. But then I feel the rest of the song doesn't match up I'm afraid: the chorus is a bit 'meh' and the lyrics seem to become progressively cheesier. First two verses - nailed it - should have just ended the song there.
How is it, that you never get tired of listenng to Mark Knopfler or Dire Straits? I have been listening for more than 30 years and still love it :-)! Awsome!!
David Knopfler is a fukin idiot. to think he could ever rise to the status of his bro. I would think he would at least have the sense to know who was the true genius. Sibling rivalry can blind one so?Its funny no one even remembers him. Kinda like Neil Bush, well, not that fucked up. But.
Fantastic! A beautiful love song to listen to on Valentine's Day. Sad though, brings tears to my eyes. I love Mark Knopfler. I want to marry you Mark. Call me?
40 Years ago they had beatles, 30 years ago Commodores, 20 years ago Dire Straits, Why do we have to listen to Justine Bieber whyyyyyyyyy whyyyyyy whyyyyy?
@Hesam0000 50 years ago, The Beatles/Stones/Kinks, 40 years ago, The Commodores, 30 years ago, Dire Straits, the most succesful Genesis lineup, 20 years ago, Oasis & Blur, now, shit.
Masterly crafted ballad with a touch of class!!Truly soul-stirring,mellifluous,heartfilling,love inspiring. It is a defining moment for Mark Knopfler to create this masterpiece-- Once in a lifetime.
War mongerers war because they can!! i,m drunk, but i,m a realist!! if this song does not give any man, woman self worth!! then what is the point? i cant speak for everyone, but its the depth of emotion and the simplicity of the lyrics but, the complexity of an extraordinary musical genius, thats all it takes really.so please anyone who really feels like your world is shit, and your angry!! just close your eyes for ten and listen!!!
@boroboyful I don't care if you're drunk; your heart is in the right place and will probably be in the same place when you're sober. The world needs more such as you....
@JulyThirtieth@JulyThirtieth If I'm not mistaken it's a National Triplate 1930's National Style O if I remember correctly: It's one beautiful bit of kit :)
This is beautiful, subtle, wondrous and profoundly fine. I love that Mark finds the essence amidst the loam. And the arrangement is just right. Thanks Mark!
Honestly now, music doesn't get much better than this! Epic! Simply epic! I've heard him (and that fantastic band) play this song live twice, and each and everytime I listen to a version like this, I'm getting goose bumps even under my toe nails!
@nikolabathory Not a matter of "if needed", artists get tired of playing a song the same way, and this is a very creative arrangement, sets the song up differently. I love it.
I love this rendition! Maybe I'm reading something into it that isn't necessarily there, but it sure seems like Mark's facial expressions betray an intensely personal element to this song ... at some point, his "Juliet" really cut him to the quick and the only thing he can do is continue to love her "through the bars of this rhyme".
I've read somewhere that this song actually have something to it. The story was that Mark Knofler had a relationship with a member of a upcoming all-female band, and when said band became known, the woman left Knofler after using Knofler's reputation and connections as leverage in the business. Hence the lines "I dreamed your dream for you, So how can you look at me like I'm just one of your deals...."
@bitulok3131 I've read that too actually, it was the lead singer of some chick punk band. She chew him up and spit him out when she thought she had gained enough. Luckily the band fell flat on it's face. I think it'd be damn near impossible to write something this emotional and not have had experienced it first hand
@jimmasson11 - well, not better, but check out James McMurtry and Ray Wylie Hubbard. Even Zappa would muster up the ocassional wordsmith job. Oh, and David Sylvan.

@dhaskins75 Did it when it was released - I have all DS and MK´s albums. just waiting for a new realease from MK. I think he´s one of the best musicians ever. I have been a fan since the first DS album in 1978...
Mark Knopfler as a solo artist & Dire Straits are all over my playlist. Wow…what a talent!!! Romeo and Juliet is one of my favorites and this is a beautiful rendition.
He doesn't show a lot of emotion usually, but in this one he does. Around 7:27 and a few other places, you can tell he's choking back that lump in the throat. Oh and that gorgeous resonator guitar, what a soulful sound. And these lyrics, the man is a poet on top of the best guitarist.
I particularly love the intro (Last Exit to Brooklyn.... also written by Mark) played by the gorgeous string quartet. Mark is an extraordinary talent, and can turn his hand to just about any music form. I even bought a Fender "MK" stratocaster, I'm so much of a fan!
There are only two reasons why I would cry during songs. Either they are absolutely beautifully written, or they remind me of my childhood. This song is both...
The face he pulls at 7:20 is after 'how about it....' you know he's thinking of some girlfriend from the distant past that still tugs at his heartstrings. Been there, Mark.
Am I wrong or is the bassist the same original bassist of Dire Straits? Besides, I love that Fender Telecaster Bass, and how it sounds. That single coil pickup can be both very aggressive and sweet.
@SrdjanLimich It's a pity; this bass player is very good though, very very good and deep, he's got such a good mood Blues in his playing, which suits very well with Mark's style.
@PietroRumenta And Glenn Worf is still playing sometimes with Mark, but he has changed his image. unfortunately I have no idea what John Illsey is doing now.
Always loved this song - takes on a new meaning for me at the moment -in a beautiful way - this is a gorgeous version - and I want to share this with someone in my heart - you know who you arexx
