  • A song that defined me.

But why does Mark look undead? He may be crying as he is singing but why can't he give his singing the passion like he used to? Perhaps it is just too painful?+

  • BTW: its not Mark Knopfler but dire straits how plays this song...

  • Absolute briljant song!

  • Absolute briljant song!

  • Such awesome talent!

  • Gracias, belleza, del sonido.

  • Although I do love the intro, it can't beat the old sax intro to this song...

  • How is it, that you never get tired of listenng to Mark Knopfler or Dire Straits? I have been listening for more than 30 years and still love it :-)! Awsome!!

  • what's this concert ? :o

  • I want that pensa guitar

  • David Knopfler is a fukin idiot. to think he could ever rise to the status of his bro. I would think he would at least have the sense to know who was the true genius. Sibling rivalry can blind one so?Its funny no one even remembers him. Kinda like Neil Bush, well, not that fucked up. But.

  • Fantastic! A beautiful love song to listen to on Valentine's Day. Sad though, brings tears to my eyes. I love Mark Knopfler. I want to marry you Mark. Call me?

  • du grand art

  • @Hesam0000 50 years ago, The Beatles/Stones/Kinks, 40 years ago, The Commodores, 30 years ago, Dire Straits, the most succesful Genesis lineup, 20 years ago, Oasis & Blur, now, shit.

  • This song is simply beautiful. Mark Knophler is a beautiful, soulful writer and artist.

  • @silvanapopa this may be best comment I've ever made :)

  • Even the toughest of men are allowed to cry to this

  • @wx5767 Nice to know there are men who cry to this *and* can admit it.

  • @kerrgal I'm one of them. I am not ashamed to admit that I cried when I saw MK play this live.

  • What is it about this song that makes grown men cry? In a good way?

  • @MrPrimus101 You must be a grown man to know that...

  • you promised me everything you promised me thick and thin...you said I love you like the stars above I'll love you till I die..

  • @LuciaChandra When we made love, you used to cry.

  • Great arrangement.

  • there are 12 Tybalts among us...

  • @213ordog this may be one of the best Youtube comments i've ever read.

  • Decisamente stupendo

  • This is Mark! Thanks for posting this. I see him every chance I get.

  • Masterly crafted ballad with a touch of class!!Truly soul-stirring,mellifluous,heartfilling,love inspiring. It is a defining moment for Mark Knopfler to create this masterpiece-- Once in a lifetime.

  • Simply beautiful....

  • What a master musician. Melodic, soulful, dramatic, smooth, simply awesome.

  • You and me babe, how 'bout it? Love you Krissy...

  • @MustardManJR Did she say yes? :)

  • Doesn't get much better than that.

  • @SaulBetmead Doesn't get better than that. At all.

  • Simply Beautimus! Awesomeness! Sweetness! Wondermous! Excellentness! Thanks Mark!!!

  • Dislikes? Really? I'm stunned!

  • mi sembra di vivere un sogno fantastica interpretazione

  • Fantastic emotions that make you vibrate the strings of the heart...!!!!

  • quality version!

  • War mongerers war because they can!! i,m drunk, but i,m a realist!! if this song does not give any man, woman self worth!! then what is the point? i cant speak for everyone, but its the depth of emotion and the simplicity of the lyrics but, the complexity of an extraordinary musical genius, thats all it takes really.so please anyone who really feels like your world is shit, and your angry!! just close your eyes for ten and listen!!!

  • @boroboyful I don't care if you're drunk; your heart is in the right place and will probably be in the same place when you're sober. The world needs more such as you....

  • i...cried...such passion were given to the song...im 19 and man i wished i knew them much earlier!

  • When I'm drunk and without a women at night, it's always time for some mark Knopfler.

  • @MKECBS1 Haha me too

  • @MKECBS1 It doesn't matter if your drunk or not, or with a woman or not, there's always time for Dire Straits or Mark.

  • And such a beautiful, lovely, amazing song. What a genius :) love it.

  • 2:20 what kind of a guitar is that?

  • @JulyThirtieth @JulyThirtieth If I'm not mistaken it's a National Triplate 1930's National Style O if I remember correctly: It's one beautiful bit of kit :)

  • @sjmcg316 You aren't mistaken. That guitar appeared on the cover of "Brothers In Arms".

  • What was the point of that intro?

  • This is beautiful, subtle, wondrous and profoundly fine. I love that Mark finds the essence amidst the loam. And the arrangement is just right. Thanks Mark!

  • Honestly now, music doesn't get much better than this! Epic! Simply epic! I've heard him (and that fantastic band) play this song live twice, and each and everytime I listen to a version like this, I'm getting goose bumps even under my toe nails!

  • The chick's name is Holly Beth Vincent, look it up

  • Sweet sadness. He performs this so convincingly. Makes me stop and watch. Bravo!

  • Excellent version!

  • esplendida

  • The intro with violins wasn't needed, really. Anyway, such a great song!

  • @nikolabathory I disagree. Makes this song even better

  • @nikolabathory Not a matter of "if needed", artists get tired of playing a song the same way, and this is a very creative arrangement, sets the song up differently. I love it.

  • one does not simply don't get in love with this song

  • I love this rendition! Maybe I'm reading something into it that isn't necessarily there, but it sure seems like Mark's facial expressions betray an intensely personal element to this song ... at some point, his "Juliet" really cut him to the quick and the only thing he can do is continue to love her "through the bars of this rhyme".

Thanks for posting this. It really made my day!

  • @ustabe

I've read somewhere that this song actually have something to it. The story was that Mark Knofler had a relationship with a member of a upcoming all-female band, and when said band became known, the woman left Knofler after using Knofler's reputation and connections as leverage in the business. Hence the lines "I dreamed your dream for you, So how can you look at me like I'm just one of your deals...."

  • @bitulok3131 I've read that too actually, it was the lead singer of some chick punk band. She chew him up and spit him out when she thought she had gained enough. Luckily the band fell flat on it's face. I think it'd be damn near impossible to write something this emotional and not have had experienced it first hand

  • @jimmasson11 - well, not better, but check out James McMurtry and Ray Wylie Hubbard. Even Zappa would muster up the ocassional wordsmith job. Oh, and David Sylvan.

  • This song doesn't need that intro with violins...

  • BEST LYRICS EVER!

  • 11 Fans Of Bebier lol

    Long Live The King Mark

  • my brother always love this song. Im sure he still can hear this song where he is now.

  • Amazing...

(0.7% dislikes ==> percentage of serious mental disorder)

  • Knopfler is a genius...with a guitar & a pen...I could go on forever...

  • monstrueusement sympatoche

  • this is the song what im going to play to my girlfriend!:D

  • This is a great rendition, first time I've heard it after being a DS fan for soo long...

  • 9 people are loosers by now :/

  • @oculusdraconi I'd love to know what their problem is.

  • this is a great live version

  • Now I am a fan of this but those who are gushing about the mix of classical and rock need to listen to some more music. Check out Ian Brown or Richard Ashcroft and there are countless others who do this just as well.

  • To combine classical music with pop in this manner is artistry, & musical understanding at its' best....

  • incredible!!

  • the intro gives me goosebumps everytime !

  • To heavy on the drums there Mr. drummer!

  • What an AWESOME intro to this song! No other rock star would ever think of doing this.

  • all of you that love Mark, you have to buy the album that he made with Emmylou. "all the roadrunning". Amazing album

  • @dhaskins75 Did it when it was released - I have all DS and MK´s albums. just waiting for a new realease from MK. I think he´s one of the best musicians ever. I have been a fan since the first DS album in 1978...

  • true that catalina1006. truly one of the best. very underrated.

  • longest modulation ever

  • and all I do is kiss you through the bars of a rhyme......poetry indeed

  • Mark Knopfler as a solo artist & Dire Straits are all over my playlist. Wow…what a talent!!! Romeo and Juliet is one of my favorites and this is a beautiful rendition.

  • At 5:28, "And I can't do anything but be in love with you..." that look on his face. Takes my breath away.

  • He doesn't show a lot of emotion usually, but in this one he does. Around 7:27 and a few other places, you can tell he's choking back that lump in the throat. Oh and that gorgeous resonator guitar, what a soulful sound. And these lyrics, the man is a poet on top of the best guitarist.

  • I particularly love the intro (Last Exit to Brooklyn.... also written by Mark) played by the gorgeous string quartet. Mark is an extraordinary talent, and can turn his hand to just about any music form. I even bought a Fender "MK" stratocaster, I'm so much of a fan!

  • I shiver.....

  • One of the most beautiful songs....Mark,you are truly gifted...stay this way always.

  • not many songwriters who are better than this . . .

  • @catalina1006 ARE there ANY?!!

  • @catalina1006 any*

  • There are only two reasons why I would cry during songs. Either they are absolutely beautifully written, or they remind me of my childhood. This song is both...

  • I just love Mark. Fantastic musician and the sexiest voice. Any USA tour dates on the horizon?

  • The face he pulls at 7:20 is after 'how about it....' you know he's thinking of some girlfriend from the distant past that still tugs at his heartstrings. Been there, Mark.

  • Thumbs up if you think the violin player on the left is good looking!

  • Simply stunning, loved it

  • this is for Sandra.....Sweetheart you made me a lucky man

  • at around 5:30 - 6:00 in i swear his eyes look like he is crying, then the camera switches - you can hear it in his voice too

  • at 6:00 in i swear his eyes look like he is crying

  • best music ever s2

  • DIRE STRAITS!

  • Man I think that the INTRO its a separate song from Romeo and Juliet. Niiiiice video by the way!!!!!!!

  • Never heard him do this song when it wasn't EPIC!!! Orchestra is a GREAT touch

  • I wish there were 1000 "like" buttons, because one is not enough for such a beauty.

  • Am I wrong or is the bassist the same original bassist of Dire Straits? Besides, I love that Fender Telecaster Bass, and how it sounds. That single coil pickup can be both very aggressive and sweet.

    Fender=versatility and warm sound

  • @PietroRumenta Yes, you're, unfortunately for John Illsey, wrong.

This is Glen Worf who's playing this time with genial Mark.

  • @SrdjanLimich It's a pity; this bass player is very good though, very very good and deep, he's got such a good mood Blues in his playing, which suits very well with Mark's style.

  • @PietroRumenta And Glenn Worf is still playing sometimes with Mark, but he has changed his image. unfortunately I have no idea what John Illsey is doing now.

  • Always loved this song - takes on a new meaning for me at the moment -in a beautiful way - this is a gorgeous version - and I want to share this with someone in my heart - you know who you arexx
