Dionne float through this mother fucker like a butterfly and hit a real high "C" at the end, lol. She can be fucked wit because she will surprise you and you won't know what hit you, lol.
my aunt florine was humming this tune in 1974 as she was walking along a new york street..she was groovin and gettin the spirit, looking up, feelin alright..then she fell in an open manhole.....wake up,auntie
Its clear Aretha and Dionne have great respect for each others work. While this song will always be an Aretha classic,Dionne did an excellent job! Was that a whistle note at the end?
Feels like the tempo is a little faster than Aretha's version. Dionne's phrasing was always her greatest strength as a vocalist. She really shows it here! That whistle thing at the end was a bit strange though! LOL!
I do agree I think the tempo is a little faster..also agree about Dionne's phrasing, but I would also add her breathing is amazing during the time. I just have never figured out how she could sing like this and not appear the least bit out of breathe or laboured!
hopehappiness one thing you got to learn what's special bout the legendary Dionne is as Keithswordmans put it (the comment her made just below yours). Dionne sings in and out of all registers with ease and equality without compromising quality period!!! She can do any song the way whenever and however she pleases whether is Aretha or the Queen of England, lol. When she does, she always as the "Dionne" magic to it like know else can mimick it!!!!
What's so special about this performance is that there are no background vocals anywhere. Dionne is carrying the melody through the chorus all by her lonesome working her way through 2 or 3 registers with stunning ease and flexibility. Few girl singers, then or now, could do this with such effortless finesse.
@keithswordsman Great insight keithswordsman. You are absolutely right. Dionne did the work of all the backup vocalists on this performance, switching gears like it was the most effortless thing to do...all with a baby growing in her belly to boot! (she was pregnant with son Damon at the time)
@keithswordsman - She and Donna Summer can fill in the gaps, I've seen both of them do numbers where they only have a piano player with them, and you can hear a full orchestra in their voices. Amazing talents....
@Alvin4NY I love something that Darlene Love who sang backup to Dionne for more than a decade stated "that singing behind Dionne was like singing behind an orchestra"!
@nanenoah - Did you read Darlene's book...? She's got some funny stories about working with Dionne, one involving John Wayne, that was very funny, and another she tells about Dionne's sister showing up late, in the middle of a show, but the best was calling out a piano player that couldn't find the opening notes to the song....Dionne walked up to the piano, clunked the mic on the keyboard and said, "Is this the note you are looking for..?" And Darlene is in, The Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame. ya!
Dionne Warwick in 1979 won a grammy for best female vocal Deja Vu and best pop female vocals as well. I don't recall the song right now. but she was the first female to win in both catergory at the same grammys. So that should tell you how good she is.
The song that year was "I know I'll never love this way again'...actually she was the first artist man or woman to win in pop and r&b for the same year.
Aretha wrote it, recorded it, but baby DIONNE sang IT!! She dances flutters, floats , soars and glides through this song like nothing you've ever heard or ever will, then she stamps it at the end with a POP!! Waking us from the daydream!! I never tire of hearing THIS SONG!! I love the dress, the hair, the stance, the posture ,the poise, the gestures too!
Wow Bravespear, you summed that perfectly, I concur totally-wish it had been ever longer and wondering if that was Dionne's only appearance on Flip Wilson.
I didn't know Aretha Franklin sang this. After hearing my girlfriend do it, I can't imagine anyone else touching it. Go Miss Dionne!!!! What a voice you had...
Aretha wrote this song. And it went No.1 on the RnB Charts. Aretha and Dionne would alway sing each other song. Dionne did a great job but Aretha's version is amazing.
I prefer Aretha's version!

Love it...
