I think Will Smith choose wrong place to live .He should choose detached house surrounded by high wall ( so he could place barber wire on the top),located on the island and being very close to the water edge(so he can escape by sea).He could assemble all necessities within the defence perimiter made of barber wire and mines(from deserted barracks),that perimiter should surround the house right the water edge and cover greater area to enable him to grow his own food.

And I Am Legend was a book written in the 1950s, way before Resident Evil. this was a film adaptation that substituted zombies for vampires.
