If you walked up to somebody on the street and played Under the Bridge and asked them who played guitar on that song, in all likeliness, they wouldn't have a clue. But if you played somebody Purple Haze, they instantly go "Oh, that's Jimi Hendrix!"

It seems to me that John Frusciante is not "overvalued" but "undervalued".

After Californication he did lots of times the same things, even if in MOTHER'S MILK and BSSM the situation was different...the discourse of the songs is different, JF's good, but not the best as some people say!

@hitmancrow7 A repetitive guitarist? I say no. Not live or in the studio. You don't usually hear the same solo twice live, and that's what is great about him, he's NOT repetitive. And his approach to each album is different. He'll be influenced by different artists at different times. There was a comparable difference between each album he did with RHCP and solo. Some things may have similarities, but that's bound to happen after writing as much music as he has.

He has so many styles, funk, psycadelic, rock... @electric417 Well, have you ever thought that RHCP started becoming commercial when Frusciante re-joined them in late 90s? I like the 2 first albums with him, I mean MOTHER'S MILK and BSSM, even if songs hadn't the same energy...but when they wrote Californication, imo, Frusciante started to put in RHCP music radio-friendly melodies and songs, and even if I'm sure that also Kiedis and the others wanted to do this, he had the principal influence!

I think that they arrived to the "extreme heights" you say because they started to do commercial songs or something like this...but the Red Hot Chili Peppers of FREAKY STYLEY and of THE UPLIFT MOFO PARTY PLAN will never ever come again!(but i Hope it)

I've heard the criticism that the music is somewhat derivative of RHCP's older music...and that's true to an extent, but duh, they have a style -- but S/A differentiated and improved on that style and invented some new directions, too.
