The reason why reparations (in the form of government policy/social spending, not cash to individuals) are important is that they still experience societal discrimination. If they didn't, there'd be no reason for reparations. Many aspects of society, from justice to education, are plagued with systemic racism.

That officially began in 1776, and the trans-Atlantic slave-trade was outlawed in 1806, while slavery was officially outlawed 60 years later.So it only lasted 90 years in America, but only 1% of African slaves came here by ship of the more than 30 million slaves sold out of Africa from the suplus vs. those that remained.
Almost all black slaves were enslaved by other blacks in tribal warfare or slave-catching.

@postalmeter Your information is DEEPLY generalized. While some slaves from Africa were sold many were also captured Rf: "Letter From King Alfonso" . True many African actually went to South America. But your not counting the slave bred and traded . Many Africans arrived in American as early as the 1600's (Rf:same from Wikipedia) MANY whites benefited from slavery because in America slavery was an industry .cotton, surgur cane,etc. NOT to mention what happened AFTER slavery.

"America" as a country didn't even EXIST until at least 1776, and that's just retroactively.
And slavery was a LEGAL industry in the US. There can't be reparations paid when there is no law broken.
As for what happened after slavery-- again, where's the law, and how did the US government breach it?
For example, in the case of Japanese-Americans during WW2, there was a breach of the 5th Amendment via Excecutive Order 9066; there was NO such breach of law after slavery.

You have to understand that this is all political, since the post-slavery incidents were chiefly "blowback" for the US government simply using slavery as a "strawman" moral justification for an illegal war.The states seceded in 1861 chiefly in response to Northern attempts to demand tribute from Southern slave-labor, and the South decided that Union membership wasn't worth that price-- and so the North attacked in order to take it by force. Freeing slaves was purely an accident.

I agree that a large number of blacks did suffer as a consequence of slavery. cultures today are still struggling as a result and obviously steps should be made by a government to try to solve thus. Yet I think the idea that members of the public should be held accountable for the actions of their ancestors is abhorent. We don't blame the modern day germans for the actions of the nazis, we don't blame descendants of crusaders for their wars nor should we. social legislation would help far more

It's not a question of that, it's a question of LAW, and going by the BOOK vs. knee-jerk anarchism.
Germans WERE forced to pay reparations to Jews for crimes during WW2, but this was because there was legal precedent set during WW1, in contrast, the Japanese did NOT have to pay reparations to the Chinese for doing even WORSE things during the war, since there was no precedent.
In the US, slavery was LEGAL pre-1865, so no reparations are possible.under ex post facto prohibitions.

@postalmeter I know what you're getting at, 'crimes can't be retrospective' and all that, however they can set a new precedence. should a lawmaking body, bring in a new law saying that X amount shall be allocated to pay reparations to ancestors of slavery, then sets out a criteria there would be little that could be done to stop the law coming into effect (depending how its formed could strike it down as unconstitutional I admit but still) I'm british so don't know american law, just principles

The US constitution forbids ex post facto laws, PERIOD. Even if they were to amend it in order to allow ex post facto laws, it couldn't apply to events precedeing the amendment itself; this would trash all due-process rights.
Even FREEING the slaves without compensation was a theft, but the first casualty of war is always truth.

It's because they still face discrimination in many aspects of society, and that discrimination can be proven with the huge amount of research that has been done on the subject. And the research isn't just opinions; you can look at data for various things like wages, education, crime rates, etc.

The reason why reparations (in the form of government policy/social spending, not cash to individuals) are important is that they still experience societal discrimination. If they didn't, there'd be no reason for reparations. Many aspects of society, from justice to education, are plagued with systemic racism.
