Actually, throughout the series, Cabose is much smarter than people give him credit for. He has his moments of intelligence, but these often were overshadowed by Church shooting him down. His best was in the first episode of season 4.

Granted that Cabose has a very unreliable connection to the intelligent part of his brain, but when it's there, it's THERE, and he is smart for a short period of time.
