I love this. I grew up in Pittsburgh and remember the BIcentennial celebration well. My Dad worked for an engineering firm that worked on the moving mechanism for the Civic Arena. Now my daughter, who grew up all over the country, lives in Bloomfield and loves it.
latrobe and uniontown is part of the pittsburgh metro area...thats why those inventions hold salt. to say latrobe and uniontown arent 'pittsburgh' is like saying brooklyn or long island isnt 'new york city'. metro areas count more than city proper people....geesh. altho to be honest...uniontown and latrobe is sorta pushin the boundaries lolol
Wow congratulations. Thanks to us, we invented the first gas station and grocery store. Also the highways that took you there, also the jeep that you rode on that highway. The aluminum can that the beer is in was invented in Pittsburgh...I could go on and on!!!
Dear Mr. Trucker : I am sorry that you lost a mirror, but it could have happened in any city. Don't blame our great city. I believe they call your disorder "displaced aggression".
I was born & raised in Pittsburgh in whats now known as the North Shore area. Lived somewhere else for 23 yrs & finally moved back home 3 yrs ago .. LOVE this city
Pittsburgh may be great for tourism, but it's not fit for semis. Thanks to the jerkoffs with the crowned roads and leaning power poles, I lost my right side mirror on sr 51. Either you Pittsburghians need to make room for trucks to get around or quit bringing us into your crazy city.
You can tell you're from Pittsburgh, you're grammar tells all. ( I wouldn't live no were else ) I'll allow for your misgivings, I'm betting you listen to Terry Bradshaw a lot because he talks like that ! lol
An excellent tribute to my hometown! As much about our city as you can fit into such a short time period. There are many more books and things you can use to get deeper into our labor history, which is phenomonal. This was a great all around look at the whole city and its accomplishments. Makes me proud to live here.
Our pride in our city is evident, particularly with our Steelers and Penquins. Now - let's use it to "red her up" and respect her. Stop littering!!! We are too classy for that!!

I have lived from Manhattan to San Francisco and all parts in between, one thing I can say without hesitation is... Pittsburgh is Americas Best Kept Secret and most livable city. If you haven't been to Pittsburgh don't wait, don't hesitate come today you may find yourself calling Pittsburgh home.
Go and search Pittsburgh Fireworks and search for 250th birthday fireworks! I have never seen such a display and I watched it online! I had to work that day!:(
Pgh. 250 yrs. CORRECTION: I live in Latrobe, PA. video says, Pgh was first to create banana splits, WRONG,the banana split was the creation of Mr. Strickler of Strickler's drugstore in Latrobe. Pgh. was NOT the birthplace of national football, Latrobe is the birthplace of national football with the first paid player. Steelers still practice in July at St. Vincent's College. Go Steelers.
WOOO PITTSBURGH!!! im glad i was born and raised there. i currently live in germany but when i leave here where do you think im going? yeah back to pittsburgh! GO 'STILLERS'
All interesting facts but the Jeep was created in Butler by Bantam Motors and Drake's well is in Oil City. Neither is even remotely part of da Burgh. Anyway, lots of reasons I moved away and will never return - weather, people, dirt, gangs, etc
Kludge must be from Cleveland, or Rio Linda. What Mr. Masich said was that Jeep and the oil refining process were both invented by someone from Pittsburgh. He made no claim about the Jeep being made there, or oil refined there.
Try to keep up. Maybe you felt intimidated and had to leave DA BURGH!
Loved it all, except the fact that Westinghouse was given credit for the lighting of the World's Fair, with no mention of Nikola Tesla and his Alternating Current who made it all possible! Congratulations, Pittsburgh.
I loved playing my clarinet on the field with hundreds of specially selected high school band members from all area schools for your 200th Anniversary, our Bicentennial Celebration. Also still have my "Chappy" badge noting the same! Pittsburgh Forever!
Although I only moved here from Upstate NY, seven and a half years ago, I can honestly say that I love it here -- with the exception of how people drive, that is! Making imaginary lines in the streets of Brookline do not make for a two-lane street, but other than that, it's been great watching the Steelers play, visiting all of the museums, checking out all of the great restaurants and making a lot of friends! Oh -- by the way, it's time to red-up for dinner. J'eat Jet? ;-)
History of Pittsburgh? What a farce. There is only one passing mention of Pittsburgh's incredible labor history. Don't workers and their families count? Westinghouse did not create the first lightbulb with A/C current, Nikola Tesla did! He stole it from Tesla and never paid him the $10,000 he promised.
ALL TRUE. all true.

emmacakerz 3 years ago
It's astounding the History Center has just one passing reference to workers and labor history, an integral part of any history of our great city.
Missing: the bloody 1892 Homestead strike or the many struggles that brought a decent living to workers and their families.
The AFL, CIO and AFL-CIO were born here.
To better understand our true history see "The Point of Pittsurgh," a magnificent book by Charles McCollester, being released September 13th.
Interesting facts, incomplete history.
