12 days without a cigarette. This song has taken on a new and laden meaning, listening with caution. If I snap I'm off to sniff a mall bench and twitch. Would give up potatoes to write a song like this.
I discovered Cote de Pablo, better known as Ziva David from NCIS, did a beautiful cover of this song, incorporating a jazz scene. Check it out ladies and gents.... there's a TV version (for the show) and a full version, make sure you watch the full version.
Just started listening to Tom Waits. I swear i am going through some five stages of death type of thing with tom waits. Starting with denial and anger that i like this. I am probably going to get to that stage soon called acceptance where I accept the fact that Tom Waits is the shit. Same thing happened when I started listening to Primus. :D
Pretty much every artist loves Tom Waits. Scarlett Johanson made a coveralbum. It sucks, but eve she loves his music that much. Bet gaga has spent a LOT of time on youtube, probably right here too. An also Bono... no, maybe no Bono.......... xD
the heavy and deep aspects are soul, the light aspects are spirit. I believe Tom Waits to be full of soul man, and he does it perfectly and is the genius of music.
I first saw Tom on the Don Lane Show in Australia(late 70's)..Tom was so out of it he fell asleep at the piano...Aussies loved him from the minute he muttered his first word and phoned in on mass to keep him around for the entire 2 hour show...he came back a few years later to find a huge fan base...
Tom Waits is the most underrated and one of the greatest and most creative musicians ever! His singing on this is the malel equivalent of Janis Joplin.
cada vez que escucho a tom waits me dan ganas de beberme una botella de whisky porque con él sientes lo bueno de estar borracho no como otros que al verlos solo piensas en lo jodida que puede ser la resaca al día siguiente... me bebo una birra a tu salud!!!
@ppadackles DK did this in her own style and as a tribute to the man and the genre.
On a side note, I am sure her tribute to TW means waaaaaaaaay more than your comment on YT. Performers do as performers do, bud. Nuthin' you or I say is going to change that.
lol. first Waits tune for me was on Fernwood tonight. He did "the piano has been drinking." Always loved Tom Waits' stuff, and youtube is a great way to see what's out there. He's just one more outstanding unfunded artist. He really is brilliant. Buy some of his stuff. As long as he can eat he'll be producing.
No drugs for sure, but with a LOT of alcohoh, hehehe. I remind you that at the beginning of his career he was a pass-by singer in the bars of the southern states. So, drinking and singing was part of his job. No matter, we really love him in anyway.
@evwaldron I think there isn't even one tune by Tom Waits I don't like - or one performance in movies. I first discovered him in the '70s. I know you'll love EVERYTHING he's ever done!!
@Raffaeledl ha. yeah, this video had me thinking of Lynch. This is very much akin to the cigarette commercial that he did. Alternately, this had me thinking of Robert Crumb as well.
@evwaldron it happens that way. i feel like a heroin dealer when i dangle Tom in front of peoples noses, i know what will happen, and they tend to fight it at first, but then one day they say " who is this again?" and i know they are hooked for life. enjoy the ride, it's a good one! and if you haven't tried it yet get "Black Rider" , put on headphones and sit back and get swept away. theres nobody out there that can do what this man does.
Tom Waits is a god amongst men, i will have no pathetic arguments on this youtube page just Tom Waits appreciation. Now fuck off elsewhere with your internet tough guys.
@sssudio thank god for you!! i'm so sick of seeing people bitching and moaning...i'm so sick of going onto videos i like only to see putrid vileness amongst users who either A. don't like the song (if you didnt like it, no-one forced you to watch, thats what the 'thumbs down' button is for, or B. who do like the artist/video but want to squabble as to the intricacies of how much they know about the artist or video....pathetic really
Will test drive this on me dad, he is 83 and his music collection is the dogs bollocks, this is one of his all time greats, and he always asks bands to sing it, however he has said not many can do it justice even the old crooners
@RodStewartFan1979 diana krall was terribly slow and she made it into a plane old song that sounds like everyone else, boring with no feeling put into it at all... hmm just like rod stewart's rip off of tom traubert's blues... @lofod is right.
Apparently for the change in voice for this song he had recorded the song but had not come up with the vocals. so he just sung in a different way and it came up like this, and he thought it was nightmareish and fitted the dream-like motion of Franks wild years.

I haven't stopped listening to Tom Waits since I saw him play "tango 'Till They're Sore" on the 1980's on David Letterman. I was mesmorized by his piano and voice.

JohnCuchta 7 months ago
@JohnCuchta I took your advice to watch it. Too slick and it's missing the raw quality
Waits doesn't need any visual to promote the sexiness in this song.... the voice and music do it alone
It's raw
it's got rhythm
it's sultry
and you don't need to look at him to feel it

Waits is a lyrical genius -
someone who can create soundscrapes
not only in his music, but also in his lyrics.
He didn't have to 'officially' be in the
"Rock and Roll Hall of Fame."
His loyal fans put him there many years ago
and passed him on to each new generation.
It is to them I say ~
Heart-thanks for the priceless gift of Tom Waits!
