  • Man, I love his voice and Joe Cockers too. Just something about that sound that gets you down deep!

  • Ironically enough, I can't hear a single accordion in this song.

  • Угарно-то, Том Вейтс-то молодец бляха-муха!

  • Art

  • This makes me want to be really, really good at being bad.

  • @rmtmiller That is the point of it.

  • close to the most perfect & complete, pictures and sounds of all tempting atmospheres

  • One of the sickest and most wonderful videos in the world of music. Usually I have to close my jaw after it ends.

  • Amo este tipo.

  • A great genius.

  • the drums sound like There There by Radiohead

  • at 01:31 you either turn off or like me turn up :)

  • @GuildF40 or WAY up,

    or WAY WAY up

  • What a voice!~

  • listen a beautiful cover of this song by c&b project!!!

  • 12 days without a cigarette. This song has taken on a new and laden meaning, listening with caution. If I snap I'm off to sniff a mall bench and twitch. Would give up potatoes to write a song like this.

  • WTF?

  • it's wonderful..! thanks lot....

  • Hmmmm, I don't remember doing drugs today

  • @evwaldron Welcome to the beginning of high standards in music

  • @evwaldron I know exactly what you mean

  • Retaphiiiin

  • Cheers !!!

  • i've noticed he doesn't actually play the accordion. he just holds one because they frighten normal folks!

  • Poor Tom, he just can't express how he feels. I do see some improvement over the years I must admit- Right- The man's a genius!

  • Uhhh ... Ahhh ... that's feeeeeling !!!

  • MEAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH - HHHHAAAAAAAAA - HAAAAAAAAAA

  • thumbs up u you are here after watching diana krall version !

  • Léolo!!

  • I discovered Cote de Pablo, better known as Ziva David from NCIS, did a beautiful cover of this song, incorporating a jazz scene. Check it out ladies and gents.... there's a TV version (for the show) and a full version, make sure you watch the full version.

  • @JohnCuchta I took your advice to watch it. Too slick and it's missing the raw quality

Waits doesn't need any visual to promote the sexiness in this song.... the voice and music do it alone

    It's raw

    it's got rhythm

    it's sultry

and you don't need to look at him to feel it

  • this is the song for kerouac! successful!!!!!

  • Just started listening to Tom Waits. I swear i am going through some five stages of death type of thing with tom waits. Starting with denial and anger that i like this. I am probably going to get to that stage soon called acceptance where I accept the fact that Tom Waits is the shit. Same thing happened when I started listening to Primus. :D

  • Pretty much every artist loves Tom Waits. Scarlett Johanson made a coveralbum. It sucks, but eve she loves his music that much. Bet gaga has spent a LOT of time on youtube, probably right here too. An also Bono... no, maybe no Bono.......... xD

  • Wristcutters was the best thing to ever happen to me:].

  • he is a musical genius I just love Tom

  • the heavy and deep aspects are soul, the light aspects are spirit. I believe Tom Waits to be full of soul man, and he does it perfectly and is the genius of music.

  • Why does he sound like he's in pain?

  • @Sylderon It's symbolic of the pain of trying to fight temptation...

  • Everything is made from dreams. Temptation. I can't resist.

Why does this song sound sexy to me?

  • @decleclic cause it's sexy as hell. Have a listen to Diana Krall's version. Very steamy...

  • @deborahsuewho

Listen too the version of Cote de Pablo.

  • Waits is a lyrical genius -

    someone who can create soundscrapes

not only in his music, but also in his lyrics.

He didn't have to 'officially' be in the

"Rock and Roll Hall of Fame."

His loyal fans put him there many years ago

and passed him on to each new generation.

It is to them I say ~

Heart-thanks for the priceless gift of Tom Waits!

    .

  • @Giavannanow i'm sorry but his not original!!! few of his song like this one, he got it from SCREAMIN' JAY HAWKINS!!

  • @Ndub19454 erm no :D

tha background is a bit like hawkins' one but there's no other connection to it except the title

  • @Ndub19454 Actually Screamin Jay Hawkins' version is a cover of an old 30's tune. This is an original by Tom Waits.

  • Whiskey and cigaretts!

  • Tom Waits is not innocent when he dreams.

  • I can hear this for days!

  • @SoopSoopa noone is ;)

  • its like prince with emphysema

  • First time I saw Tom Waits was in Mystery Men.

  • I first saw Tom on the Don Lane Show in Australia(late 70's)..Tom was so out of it he fell asleep at the piano...Aussies loved him from the minute he muttered his first word and phoned in on mass to keep him around for the entire 2 hour show...he came back a few years later to find a huge fan base...

  • he looks like the fucking Joker with that smile at the end.

  • this video had a profound effect on me back in 86 when i saw it on mtv

  • @posthumanhero

Saw this tour for Franks Wild Years back in 1987. I missed some important shows but I didn't miss that one. It was awesome.

Check out the movie "Big Time" for an a pretty serious approximation

  • Tom Waits is the most underrated and one of the greatest and most creative musicians ever! His singing on this is the malel equivalent of Janis Joplin.

  • @RocknPak

He's getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year. He's pretty well recognized by other musicians, just not by the masses.

  • @RichardMNixon Finally! Thats damn great news, I love Tom Waits! =) glad to hear he's "officially" being recognized

  • Escribe para que el mundo lea y vea la imagen precisa que tienes de él.

    Jack Kerouac

  • I'm moving to America because of Tom... and I don't even know why.

  • TOM LOOKS LIKE HELLBOY

  • Can I get an AMEN..

    Thank You Tom

  • doesn't get much better.

  • Love Tom, but also check Diana Krall version of it, beauty and crystal clear power.

  • МОЛОДЧИНА .ТАК БЫ ВСЕ ...

  • Ziva sang this song in the show NCIS.

  • @LadySilverDoe Yes, and she looks better in a purple dress than Tom Waits ever would.

  • This must be very early, his voice got a lot more growl-y later ;-)

  • @VJFranzK This is that growl with a falsetto. It's a bulldog with it's nuts in a vice and I love it.

  • @VJFranzK I thought so too, but if you listen to "Talking at the same time" from his new album, his voice is so different. Almost female-like

  • I first heard this song a music appreciation class. I still think this song has such a smoky voodoo feel. Haha.

  • buenisimo...

  • i like tom but like ian dury more, i don't think tom would be pissed at my saying this

  • No one moves me like Tom, I adore him!

  • wow

  • I really hate Diana Krall for even ATTEMPTING to cover this song. Nobody does it like Tom, and never will. <3

  • @ppadackles It coulden't be worse than the downtown train cover.

  • @ppadackles DK did this in her own style and as a tribute to the man and the genre.

On a side note, I am sure her tribute to TW means waaaaaaaaay more than your comment on YT. Performers do as performers do, bud. Nuthin' you or I say is going to change that.

    dk AND tw fan.

  • try to imagine a video clip based on the life of Jack Kerouak and William Burroughs....

  • Diana Krall sings this song also =P sounds nice with tom

  • lol. first Waits tune for me was on Fernwood tonight. He did "the piano has been drinking." Always loved Tom Waits' stuff, and youtube is a great way to see what's out there. He's just one more outstanding unfunded artist. He really is brilliant. Buy some of his stuff. As long as he can eat he'll be producing.

  • Psychedelic without drugs, truly genius...

  • @Sanitoeter666

No drugs for sure, but with a LOT of alcohoh, hehehe. I remind you that at the beginning of his career he was a pass-by singer in the bars of the southern states. So, drinking and singing was part of his job. No matter, we really love him in anyway.

  • By jove. There is an aroused person sitting in front of her computer.

  • its the best . thats all

  • I love how every tom waits video is like some heroin soaked nightmare, its vaudeville meets hell.

  • @LordPenguin7485 - write a book! That prose is your opening line....

  • @LordPenguin7485 haha! great analogy!

  • @LordPenguin7485

He accurately portrays reality, at least I think so.

  • @LordPenguin7485

i want to type something, but it's already been summed up by you

  • dont touch the stuff, it'll blow-up in your hand.

  • El blanco polifacético con voz de negro

  • I didn't know Tom Waits made music videos. Quite impressive.

  • Encontrar a Waits es como salir de una caverna musical y ver la luz... ya luego lo demas no se puede volver a oir igual

  • CURTIS MAYFIELD ON ACID ,, lovely ,,

  • Who were the 26 that disliked ????? wtf....

  • @BodyartCat Christians

  • I just discovered Tom Waits... my life has been altered irrevocably.

  • @evwaldron I think there isn't even one tune by Tom Waits I don't like - or one performance in movies. I first discovered him in the '70s. I know you'll love EVERYTHING he's ever done!!

  • @evwaldron I've known him for three years and since then I can't stop listening to him every day! I'm hooked on genius!

  • @evwaldron if you havent already, give david lynch movies a go aswell, another turn

  • @Raffaeledl ha. yeah, this video had me thinking of Lynch. This is very much akin to the cigarette commercial that he did. Alternately, this had me thinking of Robert Crumb as well.

  • @evwaldron y i know exactly what u mean

  • @evwaldron it happens that way. i feel like a heroin dealer when i dangle Tom in front of peoples noses, i know what will happen, and they tend to fight it at first, but then one day they say " who is this again?" and i know they are hooked for life. enjoy the ride, it's a good one! and if you haven't tried it yet get "Black Rider" , put on headphones and sit back and get swept away. theres nobody out there that can do what this man does.

  • Tom Waits rules the world!!! This song is its new anthem!!!! ;-P

  • I replaced that special spot in my heart I had for Nick Cave years ago. Genius

  • Tom Waits is a god amongst men, i will have no pathetic arguments on this youtube page just Tom Waits appreciation. Now fuck off elsewhere with your internet tough guys.

  • @sssudio thank god for you!! i'm so sick of seeing people bitching and moaning...i'm so sick of going onto videos i like only to see putrid vileness amongst users who either A. don't like the song (if you didnt like it, no-one forced you to watch, thats what the 'thumbs down' button is for, or B. who do like the artist/video but want to squabble as to the intricacies of how much they know about the artist or video....pathetic really

  • I fuckin' don't!

  • Haha there are a lot of people here who like Abba and Tom Waits

  • he looks like joker

  • Superb ... play it again, Sam ...

  • legand

  • I have to say as much as I like this song he doesnt have the voice for it even if it is the orignal

  • Honestly, the piece is great, but Diana Krall is a much better interpreter of this song!

  • @oldandnewpieces I reckon you can say DK's version is a much DIFFERENT one but not a better one.

  • Great song. Hopefully David Lynch has heard it. He'd score this for sure. Waits is a master...

  • Tom Waits kills pop music.

  • @MrRammstein980 Thank god for that!

  • Who else has done this song besides Diana Krall? I think I heard it in a movie or a musical or some sort of show.

  • @swetergrl91 umm in a tv show called NCIS one of the main characters Ziva did a cover of this song..

  • @swetergrl91 kirsty almeida did it as a one off with london jazz orchestra. i've been trying to find it but with no success.

  • you have to really have good tastes in music to understand and like tom waits! he makes wonderful music!

  • Mad as a cut snake !

    And a genius.

    Nuff said.

  • MASTERRRRRRR!!!!!!!!

  • Could make a dead man come

  • I didn't realise he was a singer cause I have seen him in so many films e.g The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Amazing.

  • hahahahahahahaha!!! On ya panda! I agree.

  • Will test drive this on me dad, he is 83 and his music collection is the dogs bollocks, this is one of his all time greats, and he always asks bands to sing it, however he has said not many can do it justice even the old crooners

  • bloody brilliant stuff

  • This brings death people to live ...

  • günaydın angel..

  • es mejor que dios

  • ...il ritmo dei sensi...

  • zo is dat

  • are there ANY other artists this awesome and radical and creative and original? omg this is on a different level. fasho

  • @mixalot19 have you ever heard spike jones? he makes me happy.

  • Now i get the Temptation to give him more than 5 stars. can i?

  • Diana Krall did much better with it.

  • So sad. You are deaf, a troll or both.

  • @RodStewartFan1979

No wonder why you're a Rod Stewart fan...

  • lol

  • @RodStewartFan1979 diana krall was terribly slow and she made it into a plane old song that sounds like everyone else, boring with no feeling put into it at all... hmm just like rod stewart's rip off of tom traubert's blues... @lofod is right.

  • is this is

  • that grin..! LOL!!

  • Brilliant Tom Waits. For my friend Marky with love

  • Apparently for the change in voice for this song he had recorded the song but had not come up with the vocals. so he just sung in a different way and it came up like this, and he thought it was nightmareish and fitted the dream-like motion of Franks wild years.

  • Oh, I love Tom Wait!! and yes, he's Awesome live!

  • amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*********

  • NON SO' RESISTERVI

  • Now I love this, very very cooooool. =D

    5 million stars.

  • Love this song. It always brings back ol memories from when I could walk around for hours listning to mr.Waits through my walkman as the swedish winter bit my face blue.

  • Mr. Renfield at his best.. lmao!

  • some of his songs sound like a chain smoking Cookie Monster... love it!

  • thanks for making me laugh out loud.

  • one of my favorites

  • He's great in concert...same intensity, same consecration to his music and to enjoying the performance-art of it. He's a fine artist, true to himself all the way.

  • Este hombre es dios

  • VERO

  • @javierpellin ,, But there is not god.

  • @javierpellin I agree.

  • @javierpellin estoy de acuerdo. no hay nadie quien es mejor que el

  • pokusy są wszędzie i są dla nas...

  • I love all his albums, but favorites are the ones that came out in the 80's; swordfishtrombones, raindogs, and frank's wild years.

  • His early stuff is pretty cool too particularly "The Heart Of Saturday Night" and "Nighthawks At The Diner" if you havent checked em out be sure to (although i assume you probably already have) but yeah Waits is the man. Hes also cool in the movies "Down By Law" "Coffee and Cigarettes" and "Dracula".

  • And he has a new movie coming out, its the las movie heath ledgers in. Looks awesome, tom plays the devil. Jude law, collin ferral and johny depp are in it too.

Look it up, its not out in the U.S. yet.

    The Imaginarium Of Dr. Parnassus

  • His character "Monty" in "Queens Logic" is great.

  • "nighthawks" is a great live album esp toms version of red sovines phantom 309

  • Genius!

  • I own almost all Wait's albums, always interesting to observe his growth from drunken lounge Piano crooner, to a more melancholy Mr. Tom Waits. In comparison to his later albums, Alice and Blood Money. I love his material from Alice and Blood Money most, but I can't help myself from cramming almost his whole discography into my iPod, albums that would seamlessly have anything related, but somehow work.

  • Raucherlunge ^,^

  • he has a different voice here. i am thinking the yodeling is him seeing as how his voices change in rare sudden moments. Another song in my pocket! <3

i am so putting him on my life soundtrack!! <3 <3

  • I haven't stopped listening to Tom Waits since I saw him play "tango 'Till They're Sore" on the 1980's on David Letterman. I was mesmorized by his piano and voice.

  • coolest guy ever

  • ke paja es este señor. me enkanta! :)

  • This was the first waits song i'd ever heard... my taste in music would never again be the same.

  • I share the feeling, first time i heard Tom Waits was in a second hand cd store, they were playing one of his old albums on the boom box. Browsing through the store I listened to two songs and magically Pink Floyd was out of my head, replaced by this guy. Funny enough, after becoming a Tom Waits "uber alles" music listener, his music opened up other types of music for me.

  • @stooge111

first waites song for me too. changed what
