@VitalSoX My only point is that you said "not this 80's crap" - Ringo/John recorded this in 1974, & john was dead by the end of 1980. I can't argue that the Platters version is the standard/superior, but I'm a stickler (otherwise known as a pain in the ass) for accuracy. As to superior, it's like all the people who trash (quite severely) the Carpenters cover of "Ticket to Ride" - the Beatles could do no wrong, and the Carpenters were butchers. They both have their merits, imo.
Haha...took me by surprise when I saw John with scruff in a trucker's cap and hoody. Looks like some guy from today, but totally cool. Kinda a little Ashton Kutcher in a way.
Fantastic, I tell you Ringo has made and still makes some good records. True his heyday was 71-74 chart hit wise in UK, but so what, he is still a STARR!
@caulinrocker Oh now that's going too far. I love Ringo and thoroughly enjoy his solo records, and I own most of them, but not even I would say that Ringo is a very talented vocalist. If you want to talk actual techniques and the ability of someone as a singer or vocalist, then no I'm afraid the truth is he is kinda crap. The demo versions of Snookeroo and Goodnight Vienna show that they were much better singers than Ringo, but it really doesn't matter.
The Beatles themselves were like other men, but the music and lyrics channeled through them contained magic and messages from beyond the mind. To learn how to perceive these hidden meanings, search "Truth Contest" in Google and click the 1st result, then open The Present and read through the section about The Beatles.
My dad says the luckiest man alive is big nose Ringo Star...he is a millionaire thru john , Paul and Georges talent...a fukin monkey coulda played drums for The Beatles yet this FAKE asshole with his phoney angloamerican accent acts so arrogant Lol the other 3 R the real genius and DONT act arrogant like this piece of shit . If he dismisses Ringo like that, then he IS an ignorant piece of crap.
And all the insults you make about his nose/looks..or comments about what does with fans, will not alter the fact that he is a really good drummer...you describe John Paul and George as the greatest musicians EVER...so do you think they would have stuck with Ringo if he wasn't any good?
Think about that.
It's his musical talent I'm interested in, not his looks or private life.
The other three threw Pete Best over for him. They wanted him in the band. He was what they wanted, and it worked; probably wouldn't have worked like it did without him. It's one of those situations where if anything would've been different, it wouldn't have happened. No disrespect, but your father is wrong. Ringo is a very respected musician who influenced many gifted percussionists who came along after.
@WeedsRaw No, it was written by Buck Ram for a group, "The Platters". It was released in 1955, I believe. This is a version that Lennon cooked up and gave to Ringo. I believe the parts where John is singing is the demo. Anyway, they did not write this, but I like the flavor their arrangement gives to this classic song.

He just went home." ~smile~ This is comedy relief, folks, as the discussion seems to have gotten a little heavy. I think John would be sad.
Constructive criticism: the switching of obviously different recordings of "Only You" by these two Beatles is very dissonant, since they are obviously not in perfect pitch with each other. And, while the recordings, and associated original music video starring Ringo, are interesting, I still strongly prefer the original version (I forget the group - I just remember their performance in the movie "Rock Around the Clock").
Ringo and John where always polar opposites, but they worked perfectly. Ringo's kind, down-to-earth ways complimented John's outspoken and dreamy attitude. Those two where always my favorite Beatles. And I happen to LOVE Ringo's voice. He always sounded like the emotion of the song he was singing.
I cant stand these religious idiots always using terms like The Father....I'm a father and if My children did something that infuriated me I would never punish them by sending them to a a fiery Hell to burn for all eternity !!!! Jealous God....Would a being powerful enough to create the universe in 7 day's really be jealous of anything we mere mortals could do He would probably Make himself known and demand respect and worship Muslims believe just as strongly thump your Bible elsewhere

Remove the romantic context of the song. YOU ARE NEEDED. ALL OF YOU. ONLY YOU IS FOR EVERYONE banding together for what is right, just, fair. Most people want: World Peace...No War...No Famine...Universal Love...These things shouldn't be treated as dreams otherwise the reality of them will be gone...

The Platters, an Afro-American bad-ass band.
I am truly a fan of their musical and vocal talent.
In their genre, they were truly excelling.
Around 50% of The Beatles,Ringo&John, can create a cover, that adds an extra dimension to this, without ignoring the real power of the original song.
Pure Class.

John´s version was never meant to be released! It was a demo for Ringo. That´s how they worked all the time.

So THAT'S where Steve Martin got the arrow idea!!

@greenwich1754 John did this as a guide vocal for Ringo so he would know how it should go.
