this scale is definitely wrong. Yellow jackets are really fucking painful if you get stung, I would rate them in the upper 3's compared to a wasp or hornet. I've gotten stung by a wasp, hornet, honey bee and the honey just feels like a quick cigarette burn, that's all, it's tolerable. The yellow jackets sting increases in pain within 5 seconds of being stung and it freakin hurts. Bullet ants aren't bad and I've been stung by a tarantula hawk and I have to agree that it's the worst sting.

The bullet ant shouldn't be at the top. It is after all, only an ant and I'm pretty sure it takes more than one on you to do you in, which people do put. Unlike a T-hawks electric shock sensation plus heavy stinging to follow? Just ONE is enough. C'mon now. T-hawk gets tops in my book.

I've never heard of anybody playing around with a t-hawk unlike the many I saw that fool around with bullet ants. Great Black Wasps and cowkillers (solitary wasps) are flooded with horror stories yet the t-hawk tops them? I don't even want to imagine.

I get stung by hornets and wasps annually, mostly around the fall time when they're scavaging the sugar syrup when I'm feeding my honeybees. their sting is not too bad, more like a burning match head against the skin. Also, where you get stung makes a difference too in how painful it is. the nose (i've been stung there over 20 times over the past 20 years of beekeeping) is perhaps the most painful place.

Well, bald faced hornets probably have the lightest of hornet stings just because they resemble more of a bee's sting anyways. Also, a yellow jacket does NOT hurt that much. A wasp however, hurts really bad. I have no idea about a tarantula hawk or a bullet ant because i wasn't dumb enough to let myself get stung by one.

@Rayzor360 I don't think it's possible to feel more pain than being stung by a bullet ant. Their venom reacts with the nervous system in such a way that it is literally one of the most painful things you can experience.

I think the bite of the giant centipede found in Asia, the sting of the giant japanese hornet, or a Tarratula

@Tallyock what's it like? I got stung by a yellow jacket on my right cheek when i was three, and now it's a very chubby cheek. i don't think that was a yellow jacket

i remember in the third grade i had the balls to pick up yellow jackets with bare hands without any hesitation. yeah sometimes it didnt sting and yes it did...

i have been stung by a tarantula hawk in california it did hurt pretty bad but i didnt think it was much worse than a yellow jacket but i also have been stung by a cow killer ant(wasp) and that blew all of these away completely... except the bullet ant but i'll probably never see one of those

Ok first of all that sweat bee happens to be a long legged fly!?!? Look up your insects more accurately... Second of all how come Schmidt never rated a Mutillid: Dasymutilla occidentalis... it's said that it's sting is painful enough to kill a cow... I think it deserves a spot on that chart man!

I get stung by hornets and wasps annually, mostly around the fall time when they're scavaging the sugar syrup when I'm feeding my honeybees. their sting is not too bad, more like a burning match head against the skin. Also, where you get stung makes a difference too in how painful it is. the nose (i've been stung there over 20 times over the past 20 years of beekeeping) is perhaps the most painful place.

@tonychoitellem well it did say "surprisingly". Trust me, the difference will be noticable. Well, bald faced hornets probably have the lightest of hornet stings just because they resemble more of a bee's sting anyways. Also, a yellow jacket does NOT hurt that much. A wasp however, hurts really bad. I have no idea about a tarantula hawk or a bullet ant because i wasn't dumb enough to let myself get stung by one.

@Rayzor360 I don't think it's possible to feel more pain than being stung by a bullet ant. Their venom reacts with the nervous system in such a way that it is literally one of the most painful things you can experience.
This is actually based off some scientist's scale. He probably knows his stuff.

Got stung by a yellow jacket a few weeks ago it was attached to a carrier bag and I must have upset it. It felt like a stabbing sharp pain at first, then kind of like a splinter for the rest of the day. It wasn't too bad but still wouldn't want to be stung again
