Its Schuylar man. I've been to dozens of shows since and its no go anymore. He sounds just like he does on "It hates you." The album is fine, but the vocal style on it just isn't for me.
He needs to lay off the cigs and "other stuff" and save what voice he has left. He'd do well to go to Melissa Cross or another rock vox teacher.
I had some bad times out on the road, but I'd never let my consistency get that bad....
If you watch that Melissa Cross DVD she will tell you that the thing that most has an affect on your voice is singing/screaming improperly. Him smoking ANYTHING or drinkin or whatever is irrelevant. He's not the first vocalist to loose his voice from singing improperly. Its happens.
By all most of the dudes interviewed on the Melissa Cross DVD smoke and/or drink heavily.
Also this song was played in Drop D on their record, but for a few years they have been playing it in Drop C to go along with the tuning of SOTP and IHY, so they wouldn't have to change guitars during their set. I don't know what key the song was written in, but if its not within his range it would be difficult for him to adapt. Melissa Cross touches on that.
And I'm not trying to take away from anything you said. I've seen them recently and he has been a little off. We all have our bad days.
Damn, I was going to go to this show but hated the venue. Missed out!

Mad props to grin 777 for these live He Is Legend videos. They're probably the best live captures of this awesome band. The quality is excellent.
