@kirstendirksen Hi Kirsten, you mean you never read hembrow.blogspot dot com/2011/12/groningen-not-fietsstad-2011??? You should see David Hembrow's extensive blog and the videos by Markenlei. More about all kinds of bike related issues.
@kirstendirksen The whole idea is to reward the city that is the most active and stimulating cycling. So, if you have the most cyclists or once had the best infrastructure, that doesn't mean you win the contest.
AND.. now get rid of those helmets. It's proven that helmet laws ensure that the rate of cycling drops by as much as 40%... Besides, they're not necessary if the infrastructure is safe, unless you're a racer. See Holland
It's so refreshing to see this! I'm grateful that not only in the Netherlands people cycle. That's the way to go: make roads safe and fun for cyclists and everything else follows. Best thing is, children's safety will be guaranteed as well. Could be much better (too much dooring zone and illogical design) but it is a great example of how things work on multiple levels here. Greetings from Holland
HOORAY! Davis CA is leading the way. With the obesity rate, diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease and the recent forecast of gasoline prices by CNN saying that gas will be over $5 a gallon in 2012. Way to go Davis!
That's awesome! If it weren't for the insane tax rate in California and the lack of jobs, it would almost be worth moving there. I'll stick to the cold rainy pacific northwest. My tax footprint here is low and I'm working.
Here in Holland we have a competition for the best bicycling city every other year or so. An idea for other countries??

@09conrado Fun idea. How is it judged? On number of bikers? On best bike routes?...

It's crazy I live like half an hour away. A great little city and it has no Wal-Mart near it.
