If the parasite forces its host to kill itself by drowning it in water it is likely because the parasite requires the grasshopper to be saturated with water in order to survive, or at least somethiing along those lines. in doing that, it would have an adequit water, and energy source.

A lot of variables there, but as I'm on a University course that allows me to think seriously about these things (Strategic Studies for the win!!), I think that science should be able to spot this and will begin a quarrentine program on the infected animals. Also thinking there has been a huge growth in Zombie pop-culture, so the younger generations of the human race, raised on Zombie movies should survive.
As previous commentor mentioned, there is a type of fungus in the Amazon that takes control over ants brain's and makes them walk to an ideal place for the fungi to grow and spread their spores, usually the ants end up climbing high up in trees so that the spores will infect even more ants...
What's even more interesting is that the ants have learned to tell if a fellow ant has been infected, which they then kill and dump far away from where they live to avoid spreading it...

I really liked it :) I got lots of theories about Zombies. But I don't like the idea of a zombie running :o hahaha
