It's an elastic hair tie. It is used to quiet/dampen the strings that would ring out otherwise. on 5 and 6 string basses, it is hard to dampen all the strings with the hands. You find these hair ties at any drug/discount store, Wall Mart, K mart, Thrifty, etc. Ask any woman. I have used these, and I have seen Victor Wooten up close at two concerts use these.

I did not read or hear about this so called 4 string bass rule, and I think that is stupid, use a many strings as you want, just as long as the end result is music.

Music is an art form, and by the way I play a 4 and a six string bass. So please explain this "rule" about what counts and what does not. I am just interested as to what other people think. Cheerio!
