I love ubuntu, but I used compiz for a couple of months and always ran into glitches. I found ways to fix them but it was never right. I also tried gnome shell, though it was not released yet, it was pretty cool. If anyone found this interesting look and gnome shell.
@zenileon BC most would see how it isnt as easy to install multiple applications at a time without having to use a bit of common sense. Windows is more user friendly while ubuntu is more tech friendly (rofl, idk how to word that but whatever you get my point)
quick question i want to change to linux but i also want to use my comp for stuff like word ppt excel and stuff. does linux support these programs or...? im really into personilizing my stuff..
oh also nvidia quadro fx r powerful graphic cards i have quadro fx 1400 it works with aero on windows vista/7 and ubuntu with compiz.oh and i remeber it was experiental in ubuntu 7.04 fiesty fawn since i first used ubuntu.i heard of ubuntu in 2007. i loved it so much i dual booted with it.it was the first time i dual booted an os
Is this a good operating system? Worth the download? I've heard of open source before, but never on an operating system. What does that mean? Would it run my games well? Sorry for all of the questions, but I have to know.
@Amnesia512 get 9.10 ubuntu, you CAN can play certain games through windows emulation, + there is tons of free software that is equivalent to windows software provided within the OS.
Anyways i am w8ing for Ubuntu 10.04 release ... It will be a really kick as to Windows & Mac OS ...
People switch to Linux ass soon as you are younger to learn how your pc really works and it's really cool ...
As for the people hating the terminal JUST DON'T USE IT. I am an Linux user since a year now and i love terminal, i love writing commands to my pc and it "answers" me back , i also love WINE application cause i can run any windows games/app that i need ...
i wnat to know how you move the desktop thingy and its a circle and you change like the dektop like that cylindar shape thing how do you dothat to desktop
U are not right. Compiz is already installed. It needs compiz-manager. He can install it by going into Package Manager and writing ccsm in the search or going into Ubuntu Software center and writing compiz manager or ccsm.
No, you can't play windows games, they are designed for windows OS. For example; you have proprietary windows callback functions, message queue, lots of proprietary junk. For example; when you click on something, windows kernel will pass the message to the message queue of the application it was intended for; the window you opened (game or whatever else). The only way is to translate the source code, games built for windows are binary executables.
@elicit0kame yes open-source software and ubuntu packages it and makes it available free of charge, but if you need comercial support from ubuntu/canonical you would need to pay for that, just like anyother software package.
@elicit0kame All free software. as lafaspot says the support you can pay for or you can simply google an issue or use the free ubuntu forum. They jave solved every issue I have had and all for free.

yup no problems at all, i think you cant enable Ipv6 but that doesnt really matter. but in all honesty if your in linux, rather than use Wine i would recommend using Deluge. its a native app, it works awesome, just as good as uTorrent, has a few more features, and its also very light and fast. i like that it has an IP Blocklist built in, to help keep you from getting caught =P
if you like this download UE ultimate edition (ubuntu ultimate edition) if you have a fairly up to date system you can just go to system>preferences>appearance>visual effects and select enable effects. UE is bad ass
FrostWire is the OpenSource equivalent of LimeWire which is closed source, iirc. LimeWire does have Linux releases (Debian archived), including the PRO releases which you can find free online.

You don't need LimeWire , Linux comes with Transmissions already installed it's under Internet. :P
Other news:
Linux has a Time Machine app just like Mac called "Back in Time".. "Back in Time" can be used to automatically back up files to an external drive it's handy...
Btw Limewire and Transmission are not even close to the same thing. Limewire doesnt crash computers, its PEOPLE who use Limewire, they download viruses and such. because YES there are Viruses, Trojan Horses, and such on Limewire. the thing is, you can use it in Linux all you want with no worries cus the virus cant do anything cus it was made for windows =) so ACTUALLY you'd be 100% in the clear. and if your in windows and you know what your downloading isnt a virus then your fine, its pretty easy to tell. In general though, Torrents are MUCH better. try them out
when is apple gonna start allowing linux users to use itunes?? that's a big market isn't it? :/ and other programmes too. msn messsenger etc. if they did i would definitely use linux but i need those things.
what you mean MSN Messenger? you can...use a Chat program. i connect onto my MSN and chat with friends while using ubuntu. anddd yea iTunes doesnt work but NO its not a big market. plus it would just be a pain for them to make it for every Distribution. Songbird actually works Fine with iPods, so does Amarok and Banshee and other Music players. but you do need iTunes if something gets messed up and you need to Restore.
click application then ubuntu software center then search 4 the software you want. you will not find the exact software but you will find something similar..
But wtf ? ubuntu comes with a bit torrent client u will find it in internet menu.
Also check above your nose to see if you have eyes or not.
Forget running PC games on a Mac or Linux unless you use something like the compatibility layer Wine, then Mac doesnt give you anything that you can't do in Linux.
well, Steve, things like Final Cut, Digital performer, Pro Tools HD, Logic Pro, Photoshop, and so on! and i know Linux is capable of running those programs, and that's companies fault, but then why dont people like you make it possible, or are you just another User-Only?
Yes, it is a big enough task just to get all the drivers etc together to get it all to work; eg: audio, video (incl commercial videos) printers, wi-fi, etc etc without wasting time having one's brains belted out by someone who has produced a spoofy video, but doesn't want to talk about it & how he did it.-- Better of to find
you are making a bigger deal out of this than it is, everything you just listed will take 10 minutes tops, in Ubuntu, 85% of the time it will ALREADY Have the drivers. and enabling, and setting all those effects doesnt take that long, it took me like 20 minutes to set up Emerald and Compiz and they look freakin awesome.
if i downloaded the whole thing and when it formats the hardrive would i be able to put windows XP back on with the restoration kit or would i have to buy a windows XP disk and reinstall it? please help because i wana test it on my computer and if i dont like it i want to beable to put it back to normal with the restoration kit
Try the live CD first, for a while. When you install Ubuntu it will allow you to resize the windows partition, but you need to have at least 10Gb of free space.
You can try the live CD with out installing. It will be slow and you can not save anything but it will give you a good idea of what it is like. When you install you can create a partition for windows and one for ubuntu so you can use both. Make sure you back up your data before trying this though.
lol its pretty low. mine runs all of this perfect, off a USB Stick, with an Old 128mb Grfx Card, a 2ghz processor, and 2 GBs of ram, but i have done this same thing on much less capable systems. actually i ran this with more effects than were in the video, on a Netbook in Frys, and it worked golden!
Cool effects but the music was so annoying. I didn't even have it playing from speakers, just through headphones that were connected to my computer and lying on the floor, and I still had to mute the video.
Since May 22, 1990 Millions have been looking outside the same "Windows" just to find out that their worlds have "crashed", so why keep crashing? Free your mind use Abuntu. IT IS FREE. Omar Canales
swiss yes ubuntu has compiz installed by default. You will need to right click on the background and change the visual affects. To make things easy on you i would install the CCM
Linux is awesome and kicks MS booty in everything but the downside is that Linux is free so every support is mostly user generated and based on community efforts.
This means that not every hardware is supported yet unless the community uses it and writes a program for it.
On the upside, if you buy a computer based on the LINUX community you got 100% compatibility and power at your fingertips FREE.
Linux video playback suck had Ubuntu 7.10 and 8.04 there is not good replacement for H.264 codecs. Only good on linux is compiz fusion and that is free. I wish that is better then winds in compatibility but it isn't.
lol dude download codecs and videos play fine, and if not, get VLC, it plays ANYTHING perfect. I myself use it anyways, never play videos in anything else...just try it out.
do a search here on youtube for Linux Mint &7 before you decide but i would switch it is that simple.why........so you wont get another blue screen.....linux mint comes with a lot of things already installed like firefox and this will seem petty but it says something about the differences.....youtube works as soon as you load the O/S there is a lot of little things like that that you have to manually do in ubuntu that makes it aggravating.......windoze sucks
ubuntu 9.04 has many memories for me :D

when is apple gonna start allowing linux users to use itunes?? that's a big market isn't it? :/ and other programmes too. msn messsenger etc. if they did i would definitely use linux but i need those things.
romanpr1nce 2 years ago
what you mean MSN Messenger? you can...use a Chat program. i connect onto my MSN and chat with friends while using ubuntu. anddd yea iTunes doesnt work but NO its not a big market. plus it would just be a pain for them to make it for every Distribution.

Also check above your nose to see if you have eyes or not.
anonymousassasin1 2 years ago
Ubuntu comes with Transmission for torrents....which SUCKS. you can download Deluge though or run uTorrent through Wine and it works perfect.

I plan on tryin out linux but what is the big difference between this system and mac? they look alot alike. and can it run most pc apps/games?
malikigh2005 2 years ago
Forget running PC games on a Mac or Linux unless you use something like the compatibility layer Wine, then Mac doesnt give you anything that you can't do in Linux.
stevebalmer 2 years ago
well, Steve, things like Final Cut, Digital performer, Pro Tools HD, Logic Pro, Photoshop, and so on! and i know Linux is capable of running those programs, and that's companies fault, but then why dont people like you make it possible, or are you just another User-Only?

Good clip but many of us can do without the crappy music. --Good narration is more what a clip like this should be about, & info, info.

awesome video wish i had that much time to tweak until i got something that awesome
videogamegod88 2 years ago
Yes, it is a big enough task just to get all the drivers etc together to get it all to work; eg: audio, video (incl commercial videos) printers, wi-fi, etc etc without wasting time having one's brains belted out by someone who has produced a spoofy video, but doesn't want to talk about it & how he did it.-- Better of to find
commercial training in it; less waste of time.
viking1au 2 years ago
you are making a bigger deal out of this than it is, everything you just listed will take 10 minutes tops, in Ubuntu, 85% of the time it will ALREADY Have the drivers. and enabling, and setting all those effects doesnt take that long, it took me like 20 minutes to set up Emerald and Compiz and they look freakin awesome.

if i downloaded the whole thing and when it formats the hardrive would i be able to put windows XP back on with the restoration kit or would i have to buy a windows XP disk and reinstall it? please help because i wana test it on my computer and if i dont like it i want to beable to put it back to normal with the restoration kit
hobbs312 2 years ago
Try the live CD first, for a while. When you install Ubuntu it will allow you to resize the windows partition, but you need to have at least 10Gb of free space.
lafaspot 2 years ago
@hobbs312
You can try the live CD with out installing. It will be slow and you can not save anything but it will give you a good idea of what it is like. When you install you can create a partition for windows and one for ubuntu so you can use both. Make sure you back up your data before trying this though.

wow this looks awsome
.. what is the requirement of this os ?
bc71766 2 years ago
lol its pretty low. mine runs all of this perfect, off a USB Stick, with an Old 128mb Grfx Card, a 2ghz processor, and 2 GBs of ram, but i have done this same thing on much less capable systems. actually i ran this with more effects than were in the video, on a Netbook in Frys, and it worked golden!
5Bulldawg0 2 years ago
Cool effects but the music was so annoying. I didn't even have it playing from speakers, just through headphones that were connected to my computer and lying on the floor, and I still had to mute the video.

Since May 22, 1990 Millions have been looking outside the same "Windows" just to find out that their worlds have "crashed", so why keep crashing? Free your mind use Abuntu. IT IS FREE. Omar Canales

Your spelling is fail, guy.
It's Ubuntu, not Abuntu.

could i use this version of ubuntu on my toshiba satellite laptop?

Try the Ubuntu Live CD first, before installing it. It runs from the CD without making any changes to your HD.
Of course is kind of slow, since it will be running from the CD.

don not hesitate to test it!
it costs 0$ and you got a superb community to answer questions if there are any.
first, test it live!
then install, then...
BAM! you finally got a good looking, good working OS with very little issues...even gaming is getting better!

Hope this helps some newbies.

is everything here built into ubuntu?

Not everything, but the effects shown are fairly easy and free to install if you follow guides online.

Linux video playback suck had Ubuntu 7.10 and 8.04 there is not good replacement for H.264 codecs. Only good on linux is compiz fusion and that is free. I wish that is better then winds in compatibility but it isn't.
CptBlack12 2 years ago
lol dude download codecs and videos play fine, and if not, get VLC, it plays ANYTHING perfect. I myself use it anyways, never play videos in anything else...just try it out.

Hell yeah!

Could yo be more specific please? Because i was thinking maybe change to Ubuntu, but i need someone to give me a good reason why
LamarsaElectro 2 years ago
do a search here on youtube for Linux Mint &7 before you decide but i would switch it is that simple.why........so you wont get another blue screen.....linux mint comes with a lot of things already installed like firefox and this will seem petty but it says something about the differences.....youtube works as soon as you load the O/S there is a lot of little things like that that you have to manually do in ubuntu that makes it aggravating.......windoze sucks
VillageIdiot8055 2 years ago
Yes, Ubuntu definitely saved me from the nothing I've become with Windows.
