I think a lot of people cheat off that system, I think only disabled people who can't get a job or work should get food stamps. I don't even really like section 8, I think these people need a hard lesson on what it means to struggle like some poor people in other countries don't even have fresh drinking water or a toilet. I lost my job and my Unemployment claim is being held up due to my former employer screwing up the paperwork and I am still told that I am not eligible for food stamps. Don't get me wrong I would rather be working and I have a summer job that starts the end of June but it cracks me up that I get to go hungry and even when I was working there were some months where the car may have broken down or something and I had to go hungry a few nights while people who get food stamps get to eat steaks.

Many people who receive food stamps ALSO pay taxes. There's probably more lazy people still living at home with mom and dad and living off their parent's paycheck than there are people living off the taxpayers. I think a lot of people cheat off that system, I think only disabled people who can't get a job or work should get food stamps. I don't even really like section 8, I think these people need a hard lesson on what it means to struggle like some poor people in other countries don't even have fresh drinking water or a toilet. The only draw back to what @rimusclebear said is that if they don't get benefits it will lead to higher crime, e.g. your suburban house being robbed.

I lost my job and my Unemployment claim is being held up due to my former employer screwing up the paperwork and I am still told that I am not eligible for food stamps. Don't get me wrong I would rather be working and I have a summer job that starts the end of June but it cracks me up that I get to go hungry and even when I was working there were some months where the car may have broken down or something and I had to go hungry a few nights while people who get food stamps get to eat steaks.

It is suppose to assist you need be, however there are too many people out there taking advantage of what is being provided. I don't know what the government has planned but when our recession subsides, if it hasn't already, they should cut back food stamps. I would like to see more people with a work ethic. @twichesyt how is that a lie when I can't afford an expensive phone. Yes I am talking about buying a $100 phone but that is cheaper than a $200 phone. It is a prepaid phone and I only put $10-$20 on it as I can afford. I can't always afford $50 a month.
I used to make more money at one point. You should never judge; I only make around $1,000 per month. It took me 15 years to get everything I have now. What is wrong withg someone having a cell phone when they are poor?

My income has dropped and without the computer I would have no income. Why would anyone sell something they are financing that is stupid. I take hand me down clothes so I don't have to buy clothes for a few years. I am buying new clothes this year for the first time in a few years.
Don't judge people because you don't know their whole story. Pherhaps I will share it on here someday.

Both the computer and Tv are financed. I pay $10 per month for Tv and around $20 for computer. I have to have a computer because I take online courses and I work from home. Yes I live in a nice apartment but 60% of my income goes to rent.
I live in about $1,000 per month. Many of the things I have are through hard work, financing, gifts or from when I lived with my parents. I used to make more monet one time.
The recession has hit me hard. There are people who worse off than me.

I understand how you feel, I really do. I'm told I was a happy RN, tax paying, wife & mom of 3 until 2 years ago. Someone or some people broke into my house one night, while my husband was working, and beat me and left me for dead. Luckily kids were all with Grandma that weekend.
Sorry if writing is bad, computer is helping. I only have 30% of vision left. This cut affected me too.

I get food stamps and I have the same clothes for 3 years. I only have one pair of shoes. My clothes are hand me downs for my sitster,my mother and my FATHER. ( I am a woman yet have to wear mens clothes at times.)
I just lost $14 in food stamps because I made an extra $10 per month that month

@InspiredMuse74 Certainly the system doesn't reward people for working hard and trying to break the cycle. There are people out there who really need help. Unfortunately, it ends up becoming a way of life for some because there is no incentive to try to get off public assistance. I'm sorry that this has happened to you but keep your chin up. Keep working hard and you'll be free of that garbage completely. Others have made your past... it's up to you to make your future.

And if youre not, sell the computer, use the time you currently spend on the internet to instead earn money and buy some clothes. Its not that hard.

There's too many people that I see on a daily basis abusing the food stamp system simply b/c they don't know how to manage their money or they simply won't work! Just last week I watched a couple get out of their Hummer H2, walk into walmart, purchase an entire cart of food, and pay with food stamps. I wanted so badly to say something, but I knew it wouldn't accomplish anything so I kept my mouth shut!

They have the option of "cash back" when they use it. It's really a farce. If people need help, by all means, help them! How about revamp the Food Stamp Program - Make it like WICK .. Make it so they have to swipe the card BEFORE they get the groceries scanned. - If it's Chips, Soda, Cookies or candy - they don't get it - It would be SIMPLE to get a list of UPC's from the manufacturers of Lays, Mars, Pepsi, Keebler, and build one long data base to FILTER the purchases. THAT would help END Obesity!!

FOOD STAMPS are necessary for poor people not to ordinary people, specially for all those NEZGROES lazy stupid way of life. Negroes are dying of hunger in Africa and they even work all day. American negroes dont like to work, they not even know how to use proper clothing!!! Food stamps should go to those that like to work, like education. have proper vision of life and want to have a better future for their families.

@BSagitarius maybe you should consider that those same people wearing name brand clothing may be getting it secondhand at yard sales, thrift stores, or from friends, relatives and neighbors. Just because you are poor does not mean you have to LOOK how people would perceive poor people to look, all dirty, disheveled, and wearing torn and tattered clothing. It also doesn't mean they have to turn down a gift of a video game console or other popular electronics they receive as gifts from others.

@BSagitarius whatever tax comes out of my paycheck, only 1% goes to food stamps. I'm more concerned about the 99% that goes toward more wasteful government spending than I am about someone trying to get help to eat. Food IS a necessity in life. Food is also perishable, and I'd rather see people eat than food dumped in the garbage and wasted. Food stamps also STIMULATE the economy. Every dollar spent in food stamps expands the economy by $1.84.

@BSagitarius Laziness is also not measured by the amount of help a person needs. Many people work low income wages and it's not enough to get by in this country. Many people who receive food stamps ALSO pay taxes. There's probably more lazy people still living at home with mom and dad and living off their parent's paycheck than there are people living off the taxpayers. A person's wages or lack thereof does not determine their level of laziness.
